From Self To Shelf written by Sally Bayley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Art, Modern categories.

From Self to Shelf is a marvellously rich and various exploration of the interplay between biographical and aesthetic selves, ranging from the great self-inventions of the Romantic poets, through the complexities of revelation and impersonality that characterise twentieth century art, and down to the knowing dramas of reticence and display that distinguish the work of so many leading contemporaries. It includes essays in literary criticism, chapters in the history of painting and of music, biographical accounts, and studies in popular culture, as well as reflections by eminent practitioners. The editors have assembled an outstanding group of contributors, with names both new and familiar, to produce a volume at once absorbing and surprising, warmly alive to the human stories it tells while remaining theoretically up-to-date, and creating a book that is altogether as engaging and thought-provoking as the masterpieces it illuminates. Seamus Perry. Fellow and Tutor in English, Balliol College, Oxford.

The Self On The Shelf written by Gary Greenberg and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-08-04 with Psychology categories.

The Self on the Shelf examines the cultural and philosophical determinants of popular “recovery” books. Greenberg argues that this literature can be read as documents of the prevailing understanding of the self in American society. The construction of the self promoted by recovery literature is seen as a nihilistic one insofar as it denies the significance of what continental philosophy calls the Other. In this sense the self-help books are correct in their assertion that we have lost sight of how to love, but their proposed solution shows up as a recapitulation and strengthening of the conditions that gave rise to this situation in the first place. Greenberg’s critique provides a commentary on the difficulties that face our culture in achieving any sense of meaningful community, and on the way that this problem surfaces in a highly popular discourse.

When your life plan explodes, you ask yourself the big questions: What do I really need in life? How can I make my life a work of art? Should I buy a house? Have kids? What is a life? Following in Kerouac and Steinbeck's tire tracks, a 32-year-old, post-breakup Brendan Leonard hits the road in search of healing and a new, post-economic-downturn American Dream. Sleeping in the back of a beat-up station wagon, he seeks answers-and hopefully, the occasional shower-in the postcard-worthy places of the American West. Part ballad to the romance of the road and part heart-searching treatise on the American Dream, The New American Road Trip Mixtape is Leonard's raw, often hilarious, barstool storytelling at its best.

My Venice written by Donna Leon and has been published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-03 with Travel categories.

A collection of “entertaining . . . unapologetically opinionated” essays from the New York Times–bestselling author of the Commissario Guido Brunetti novels (The New York Times). Donna Leon has won legions of fans and waves of critical acclaim for her international bestselling mystery series featuring Venetian Commissario Guido Brunetti—not only for her intricate plots and gripping narratives, but for her insight into the culture, politics, family-life, and history of Venice. But outside of her mystery novels, Leon has also been writing essays on Venetian life and related topics for years. In My Venice and Other Essays, the best of these essays are collected: more than fifty charming and insightful works ranging in topic from battles over garbage in the canals to the troubles with rehabbing Venetian real estate. Leon shares episodes from her life, explores her love of opera, and recounts tales from in and around her country house in the mountains. With pointed observations and humor, she also explores her family history, her former life in New Jersey, and the idea of the “Italian man.” Sure to please longtime Leon fans as well as anyone who appreciates the wit and wisdom of a master wordsmith, this volume offers “an intriguing glimpse at the strong views of an exceptionally interesting and entertaining novelist” (The Seattle Times).
