Karate is a word widely known today. However, mostly it is full of clichés based on ignorance and prejudice. This book is written for newcomers to the history and teachings of karate. It shows some of the problems which can arise while viewing the backgrounds of karate. Using Japanese sources, it imparts worth knowing information on two key figures of karate history and the karate taught by them: Funakoshi Gichin (1868-1957) and Funakoshi Yoshitaka (1906-1945). Both Funakoshis compiled a school bearing the name Karate-dô Shôtôkan-ryû. Shôtôkan-ryû belongs to the most widespread currents of karate worldwide. The book contains a biography of both Funakoshis directly translated from Japanese and comprehensively annotated. It was devised during Funakoshi Gichin's lifetime and contains besides important data also interesting anecdotes and insights in their karate conceptions. Additionally old photos of the two Funakoshis are shown and explained. Finally important and interesting facts regarding Funakoshi Gichin and Funakoshi Yoshitaka are presented in the form of a timetable. Although the book is designed for newcomers, it also supplies material for experts, for it contains information and pictures which are introduced for the first time in an English language work.

A concise yet comprehensive history of traditional Okinawan and Japanese karate, with biographies of the great karate masters This concise-yet-comprehensive history of traditional Okinawan and Japanese karate includes authoritative biographies of the great karate masters of the past and the philosophical issues they faced as karate changed and evolved. Bringing a fresh understanding to the study of the martial arts, Mark I. Cramer dispels many of the often-repeated martial-arts myths as he details the lineages of the modern styles of karate and describes the social, cultural, and political events that influenced them. While most books focus on a single style of karate or the biography of just one of the great teachers, this book offers a well-researched and detailed overview. By bringing all of this knowledge together in one volume, Cramer—an award-winning inductee into the USA Karate Federation’s Hall of Fame—fills a crucial gap.

An authoritative text providing the newcomer to karate with all they need to know. Packed with clear photographs detailing techniques and kata (the combinations of techniques students must master to progress through the belts), this book is organized and designed to take the student step-by-step through the progression of the martial art, taking each belt in turn. Photographs are accompanied by clear instructions from the author, a trained instructor with his own karate school. Karate is a martial art that focuses on the application of strikes using the hands and feet. It originated in Japan and has become popular throughout the world. There are many styles of karate but the most widely practiced outside of Japan is Shotokan. Training in karate is normally divided into three sections: the basic technique; kata, or sequencing of techniques to imaginary opponents; and kumite, the sparring done with an opponent. Gradings are the exams needed to progress to the next level. Typically, three months is needed to progress through each grading. There are usually three or four gradings per year, each with a syllabus. In total a student must passten gradings in order to get a black belt--this, on average, takes a student four years to attain. Packed with useful how-to diagrams and guides on technique, this book covers the training required to attain a black belt.

Japan Encyclopedia written by Louis Fr?d?ric and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Civilization categories.

"Knowing Japan and the Japanese better," Louis Frédéric states in the introduction to this encyclopedia, "is one of the necessities of modern life." The Japanese have a profound knowledge of every aspect and detail of Western societies. Unfortunately, we in the West cannot say the same about our knowledge of Japan. We tend to see Japan through a veil of exoticism, as a land of ancient customs and exquisite arts; or we view it as a powerful contributor to the global economy, the source of cutting-edge electronics and innovative management techniques. To go beyond these clichés, we must begin to see how apparently contradictory aspects of modern Japanese culture spring from the country's evolution through more than two millennia of history. This richly detailed yet concise encyclopedia is a guide to the full range of Japanese history and civilization, from the dawn of its prehistory to today, providing clear and accessible information on society and institutions, commerce and industry, sciences, sports, and politics, with particular emphasis on religion, material culture, and the arts. The volume is enhanced by maps and illustrations, along with a detailed chronology of more than 2,000 years of Japanese history and a comprehensive bibliography. Cross-references and an index help the reader trace themes from one article to the next. Japan Encyclopedia will be an indispensable one-volume reference for students, scholars, travelers, journalists, and anyone who wishes to learn more about the past and present of this great world civilization.
