Emphasizing the most recent developments this book addresses both the basic and applied aspects of adhesion. The authors present the latest results on fundamental aspects, adhesion in biology, chemistry for adhesive formulation, surface chemistry and the pretreatment of adherends, mechanical issues, non-destructive testing and the durability of adhesive joints, as well as advanced technical applications of adhesive joints. Prominent scientists review the current level of knowledge concerning the role of chemical bonds in adhesion, new resins and nanocomposites for adhesives, and about the role played by macromolecular architecture in the properties of hot melt and pressure sensitive adhesives. Written by 34 acknowledged experts from academic and industrial research facilities, this is a valuable source of information for chemists, physicists, biologists and engineers, as well as graduate students interested in fundamental and practical adhesion.

Poly mer Interface and Adhesion provides the critical basis for further advancement in thisfield. Combining the principles of interfacial science, rheology, stress analysis, and fracturemechanics, the book teaches a new approach to the analysis of long standing problemssuch as: how is the interface formed; what are its physical and mechanical properties;and how does the interface modify the stress field and fracture strength of the material. The book offers many outstanding features, including extensive listings of pertinent references, exhaustive tabulations of the interfacial properties of polymers, critical reviews ofthe many conflicting theories, and complete discussions of coupling agents, adhesion promotion, and surface modifications. Emphasis is placed on physical concepts and mechanisms, using clear, understandable mathematics.Polymer Interface and Adhesion promotes a more thorough understanding of the physical, mechanical, and adhesive properties of multiphase, polymer systems. Polymer scientistsand engineers, surface chemists, materials scientists, rheologists, as well as chemical andmechanical engineers interested in the research, development or industrial applications ofpolymers, plastics, fibers, coatings, adhesives, and composites need this important newsource book.

This book presents the analysis of up-to-date techniques used for the determination of acid-base properties in view of their applicability to examination of solid organic and inorganic surfaces. The studies have been carried out by the authors since 1993, showing experimental data on surface properties of more than 150 polymers, such as carbocatenary and heterochain polymers, copolymers and their blends, as well as different epoxy and rubber compositions used in adhesive joints. The adhesive ability of metal-polymer systems based on epoxy compositions, polyolefins, and rubbers was studied as a function of absolute difference in acid-base properties of adhesive and adherends, and the possibility to predict adhesive interaction on this basis was experimentally verified. The book shows the important role that acid-base interactions play in establishing interfacial adhesive-adherent contact and outlines practical recommendations regarding parameters of quantitative estimation of acid-base surface properties that implies the relationship with adhesive ability in polymer-metal systems. Creating polymeric materials with greater strength characteristics when in contact with metals is the most important problem when adhesive joints are designed. The authors obtained experimental data for thermodynamic and acid-base properties of about 200 organic and inorganic surfaces that find a wide practical application. These results may be used as a reference source to predict the adhesive ability of different coating systems. The possibility to predict adhesive interaction of adhesive with adherend, taking into account the absolute difference in their acidity and basicity, was verified experimentally.

For several years, I have been responsible for organizing and teaching in the fall a short course on "Fundamentals of Adhesion: Theory, Practice, and Applications" at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Every spring I would try to assemble the most pertinent subjects and line up several capable lecturers for the course. However, there has always been one thing missing-an authoritative book that covers most aspects of adhesion and adhesive bonding. Such a book would be used by the participants as a main reference throughout the course and kept as a sourcebook after the course had been completed. On the other hand, this book could not be one of those "All you want to know about" volumes, simply because adhesion is an interdisciplinary and ever-growing field. For the same reason, it would be very difficult for a single individual, especially me, to undertake the task of writing such a book. Thus, I relied on the principle that one leaves the truly monumental jobs to experts, and I finally succeeded in asking several leading scientists in the field of adhesion to write separate chapters for this collection. Some chapters emphasize theoretical concepts and others experimental techniques. In the humble beginning, we planned to include only twelve chapters. However, we soon realized that such a plan would leave too much ground uncovered, and we resolved to increase the coverage. After the book had evolved into thirty chapters, we started to feel that perhaps our mission had been accomplished.

Adhesion And Friction written by Michael Grunze and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-10-19 with Science categories.

"Adhesion and Friction: Microscopic Concepts" was the theme of the third workshop on interface phenomena organized jointly by the surface science groups at Dalhousie University and the University of Maine. The first two workshops were dedicated to the discussion of elementary processes governing the reaction rates at surfaces and in bulk materials, i. e. adsorption, desorption and diffusion. In this third year a step towards the understanding of complicated (but practical) issues such as adhesion and friction between different materials was undertaken. The presentations and discussions focused on elementary chemical and physical processes at surfaces and interfaces relevant to adhesion, lubrication and friction and gave an account of the application of surface science methods and techniques to relevant model systems. Clearly, at the time of the conference and the publication of the proceedings the understanding of the chemical and physical mechanisms determining the interaction between two solids is still rudimentary, but the issues involved are attracting the attention of more and more scientists and are now regularly represented at scientific meetings. The conference was held at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The facilities provided an ideal setting for the meeting and lively discussions. On behalf of the participants, we would like to express our grat itude to the staff at Dalhousie University for making our stay so pleasant and memorable.
