La respuesta a la diversidad del alumnado en los centros educativos debe acontecer en un marco inclusivo: escuela(s) en las que cualquiera puede aprender y participar; políticas y prácticas que promueven la colaboración y el sentido de pertenencia a la comunidad; culturas escolares que respetan las diferencias personales y reconocen la diversidad en las aulas. Concebida la educación como un proceso esencialmente relacional que requiere un compromiso ético y político con el derecho a la educación de todos, es preciso que los discursos y las prácticas formativas contribuyan al desarrollo de profesionales capaces de trabajar en contextos complejos. Su formación inicial, por tanto, debería acompañarles en los aprendizajes que serán valiosos en su futuro quehacer profesional. Este es el propósito de este trabajo, sugerir ideas, propuestas y referencias desde las que reflexionar sobre cuestiones que son nucleares cuando hablamos de una escuela sin exclusiones. El libro se estructura en tres capítulos en los que se plantean conceptos e ideas fundamentales en torno a la Educación inclusiva. Se formulan algunos interrogantes en relación con diferentes variables de los sistemas educativos y se introducen algunas controversias y paradojas sobre su desarrollo en los escenarios escolares.

First published in 1987, Common Knowledge offers a radical departure from the traditionally individualistic psychologies which have underpinned modern approaches to educational theory and practice. The authors present a study of education as the creation of ‘common knowledge’ or shared understanding between teacher and pupils. They show the presenting, receiving, sharing, controlling, negotiating, understanding and misunderstanding of knowledge in the classroom to be an intrinsically social communicative process which can be revealed only through close analysis of joint activity and classroom talk. Basing this analysis on a detailed examination of video-recorded school lessons with groups of 8 to 10-year-olds, they show how classroom communications take place against a background of implicit under-standing, some of which is never made explicit to pupils, while there develops during the lessons a context of assumed common knowledge about what has been said, done, or understood. When Americans and Latin Americans talk about democracy, are they imagining the same thing? For years, researchers have suspected that fundamental differences exist between how North Americans view and appraise the concept of democracy and how Latin Americans view the same term. These differences directly affect the evolution of democratization and political liberalization in the countries of the region, and understanding them has tremendous consequences for U.S.–Latin American relations. But until now there has been no hard data to make “the definition of democracy” visible, and thus able to be interpreted. This book, the culmination of a monumental survey project, is the first attempt to do so. Camp headed a research team that in 1998 surveyed 1,200 citizens in three countries—three distinct cases of democratic transition. Costa Rica is alleged to be the most democratic in Latin America; Mexico is a country in transition toward democracy; Chile is returning to democracy after decades of severe repression. The survey was carefully designed to show how the average citizen in each of these nations understands democracy. In Citizen Views of Democracy in Latin America, ten leading scholars of the region analyze and interpret the results. Written with scholar and undergraduate in mind, the essays explore the countries individually, showing how the meaning of democracy varies among them. A key theme emerges: there is no uniform “Latin American” understanding of democracy, though the nations share important patterns. Other essays trace issues across boundaries, such as the role of ethnicity on perceptions of democracy. Several of the contributors also compare democratic norms in Latin America with those outside the region, including the United States.
