Candida albicans is present as a harmless commensal in the oral cavity of as many as 20–50% of healthy individuals. Clinical fungal infection develops when the host’s resistance is impaired and the natural balance of the oral flora becomes disturbed. Fungal infection is therefore a sign of either a local or systemic impairment of the host’s resistance. Local predisposing factors include the lack of normal bacterial flora in newborn babies, poor oral hygiene in denture wearers, reduced salivation, smoking and inhaled corticosteroids. Systemic predisposing factors include antibiotics, diabetes, Down syndrome, APECED (autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidosis-ectodermal dystrophy), advanced cancer, immunodeficiency, immunosuppressive therapy and radiotherapy around the salivary gland area.

Some 150 color illustrations depict all known facultative pathogenetic candida species and other potentially pathogenetic yeasts in pure culture and under the microscope. Clinical examples help explain the diagnosis and differential diagnosis. The volume provides the physician with handy, concise and practice-oriented guidelines to correct diagnosis and effective treatment of yeasts in the female patient.

An overview of associated key signs and salient features to look for on oral exam is provided as well as other clinical manifestations, differential diagnoses, and treatment recommendations. The mouth is an important anatomical location with a role in many critical physiologic processes that are frequently involved in conditions that affect the skin or other organ systems. In many instances, oral manifestations of a disease precede the appearance of other stigmata. Therefore, early recognition of oral signs and symptoms associated with underlying systemic diseases can be invaluable to the clinician in establishing a diagnosis and prompt initiation of therapy. This book, written for dermatologists, dentists, otolaryngologists, and oral medicine specialists, offers a structured approach to the therapy and management of diseases affecting the oral mucosa.
