In 2002, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) tasked the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory to create a programme of work to analyse the impact of emerging alternative concepts and technologies. The programme is called Joint Force Structures Development (JFSD). Its purpose is to inform UK policy, equipment and force managers of important implications that might affect their area of responsibility by showing where new concepts have the potential to influence force structures. JFSD studies many varied themes including, amongst others, network enabled force structures, networked fires and dispersed operations, swarming, effects-based operations, future command and control, coalition interoperability, space and alternative logistic concepts. In all cases, the UK joint force is examined and the implications for its size and composition identified. The analysis process developed by JFSD is founded on the idea that a set of descriptive rules and planning guides can be developed that capture the essence of each concept, the principles that reflect its unique characteristics. A library of rule bases is produced and, set in the context of planning scenarios, development of alternative campaign plans that employ the concepts can be carried out. These can then be used in the development of future force structures.

One key to the Army's success in transformation will be a solid process for concept development. The Army needs a means to generate, elaborate, refine, describe, test, and validate new concepts relating to doctrine, tactics, techniques, procedures, unit and team organization, job allocation, training, leader development, and other aspects of technology integration. One approach is to construct an environment that transforms the scale in which situations can be presented realistically and to develop, within that environment, a set of tools that can be used to explore selected command group functional performance issues in a methodical fashion. Two tools, a scaled-world tool and a concept-development tool, were designed and developed. In addition, six scaled-world events and 10 concept-development sessions were produced. The scaled-world events and concept-development sessions were formatively evaluated. Based on the evaluation results, it appears that both tools have value for concept identification and concept development. Feedback on both tools was very positive and generally met the project objectives. In addition, future directions for improvements to and use of the synthetic task components are discussed in terms of short-term and long-term requirements and possibilities.

Lost In Space Future Force Leaders And Visualization Of Space Operations written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with categories.

Space operations are important to today's Army and will be increasingly important to the Future Force. Currently, the Army has an opportunity to develop Future Force leaders to best utilize space to achieve full spectrum dominance. If the Army does not take this opportunity and develop leaders that can visualize space, there could be grave consequences for the Nation and the Army as the space environment becomes more complex. There are three main documents that provide direction for space operations in the Future Force: Army Space Policy, Army Space Master Plan (ASMP) and Training and Doctrine Command Pamphlet 525-3-14. ASMP outlines the overarching concepts to implement Army Space Policy and TRADOC PAM 525-3-14 details the Army's modernization plan for space. This monograph studies the plans outlined in these documents as they relate to the doctrine, training, leader development, organization and personnel implications for Army space requirements. It examines these concepts in order to answer the question: Is the U.S. Army developing Future Force leaders who will effectively visualize the impact of space capabilities and limitations in their battlespace?" This is a four-part study that first analyzes the Army's plan for space. Next it examines the anticipated threats to space operations and current space-based training, education and doctrine. The third part of the study analyzes the Army's concept of visualization as a function of battle command. Since the Army does not explain how to develop visualization skills in leadership or operational doctrine, the monograph analyzes similar leadership doctrine concepts and examines the concept of intuition as described by Dr. Gary Klein. The final part of the study analyzes the current Army plan for space to determine if the Army's plan will develop intuition or visualization skills in Future Force leaderT.

A Concept Of A Future Force written by Charles W. Taylor and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981 with categories.

Using a likely force design of a 1990's modernized US Army as a point of departure, a concept for a future force for the early years of the 21st century is described by this futures report. Consideration, based on the author's view of trends and ideas found in futurist literature, is given to planning, manning, training, equipping, fighting, and managing the future Army portrayed. The author's conceptual future Army is few in numbers of personnel and is technologically superior when compared to traditional 20th century forces. It is composed of attrition, reactionary, and contingency fighting elements. Its principal battle characteristics will be deep, decisive, piranha-like strikes against enemy forces. The author envisions that his future force will apply a rapid succession of actions consisting of scan, swarm, strike, and scatter. During the transition years from a modernized 1990's force to the 21st century fighting force, the author foresees a Reserve Component which will play an important role assisting in countering threats to US national security. The development and application of technology has been an essential part of U.S. airpower, leading to a century of air supremacy. But that developmental path has rarely been straight, and it has never been smooth. Only the extraordinary efforts of exceptional leadership - in the Air Forces and the wider Department of Defense, in science and in industry - have made the triumphs of military airpower possible. Development Planning provides recommendations to improve development planning for near-term acquisition projects, concepts not quite ready for acquisition, corporate strategic plans, and training of acquisition personnel. This report reviews past uses of development planning by the Air Force, and offers an organizational construct that will help the Air Force across its core functions. Developmental planning, used properly by experienced practitioners, can provide the Air Force leadership with a tool to answer the critical question, Over the next 20 years in 5-year increments, what capability gaps will the Air Force have that must be filled? Development planning will also provide for development of the workforce skills needed to think strategically and to defectively define and close the capability gap. This report describes what development planning could be and should be for the Air Force.
