Eastwards / Westwards: Which Direction for Gender Studies in the XXIst Century? is a collection of essays which focus on themes and methods that characterize the current research on gender in Asian countries in general, under a comparative approach that tries to cut across the boundaries of time and space. In this collection, ideas derived from Gender Studies as they are practised all over the world have been subjected to scrutiny for their utility in helping to describe and understand regional phenomena. But the concepts of ‘local’ and ‘global’–with their discoursive productions–have not functioned here as a binary opposition: localism and globalism are mutually constitutive and the authors have interrogated those spaces of interaction between the ‘self’ and the ‘other’, bearing in mind their own embeddedness in social and cultural structures and their own historical memory. Eastwards / Westwards: Which Direction for Gender Studies in the XXIst Century? provides a critical transnational perspective on some of the complex effects of the dynamics of cultural globalization, by exploring the relation between gender and education, politics, economics, anthropology, linguistics, historiography, sociology, literature, and popular culture, as agents of the (re)invention of old and new, male and female identities, their conversion into concepts and their circulation through time and space.

Apresentação A obra "Gênero: identidade e reconhecimento" propõe olhares interdisciplinares acerca de questões histórico-culturais propositadamente invisibilizadas relativas à inferiorização do feminino. Um aparente paradoxo, se considerada a evolução formal de garantias jurídicas como produto de intensas lutas por reconhecimento, mas que, a despeito dessa notória evolução, tem nas construções sociais, simbólicas e discursivas, as evidências da perpetuação dos perversos processos de discriminação e dominação. Ao apresentá-la, estabeleço de pronto um diálogo com pesquisadores e educadores e, principalmente, com mulheres e comunidade LGBTTT (Lésbicas, Gays, Bissexuais, Travestis, Transexuais e Transgêneros) que identificarão nos estudos a seguir a narrativa de suas próprias vidas. No primeiro capítulo, de autoria de Rosângela Angelim, tem-se uma reflexão acerca dos processos subjetivos da construção identitária das mulheres em relação às teorias da redistribuição econômica e do reconhecimento cultural/identitário e suas contribuições para a compreensão das ações e demandas dos movimentos feministas, sob as perspectivas de Nancy Fraser e Axel Honneth, respectivamente. Através de uma incursão histórica, a autora desvela as memórias coletivas, as vivências, os processos de luta e as violências (invisibilizadas e/ou naturalizadas) impostas às mulheres no contexto das desiguais relações de gênero tecidas ao longo dessa incursão. Em diálogo com outros autores, aponta as controvérsias e convergências das teorias estudadas, demonstrando sua complementariedade para o apontamento de rumos para os movimentos feministas, no que se refere tanto ao autorreconhecimento das mulheres e a busca por reparação de danos históricos, quanto como mecanismo de busca de status social como meta de participação paritária. Na sequência, Juliana Bedin Grando e Renata Maciel aprofundam a temática da precarização das relações laborais femininas sob a ótica cisgênero: identidade e reconhecimento - Costa / Botton da divisão social e sexual do trabalho. As autoras apresentam dados da crescente participação feminina no mercado de trabalho e, contraditoriamente, da precarização de seus direitos em relação aos homens, o que denota a importância do trabalho feminino para o capital, ainda que, de formato totalmente exploratória. Tempo parcial, salários menores, exercício de atividades de menor qualificação, informalidade, exigência de multifunções, jornadas mais extensas (considerando-se a conciliação com o trabalho doméstico), subalternização da mulher nas relações trabalhistas são condições que evidenciam que a luta das mulheres por reconhecimento e igualdade ainda está distante de ser vencida. As modificações da sociedade em relação a temas como gênero, identidade e família exercem pressão sobre o sistema jurídico, exigindo dos poderes públicos medidas concretas necessárias à efetivação dos direitos fundamentais estampados na Constituição Federal de 1988. O direito civil passou por grandes transformações e deve ser analisado sob o crivo dos princípios constitucionais. As modificações recentes no direito de família, ainda em processo de consolidação, acarretam consequências para o direito público, especialmente no âmbito do direito fundamental à previdenciário social. O Poder Judiciário, chamado a harmonizar as várias situações novas, decide com fundamento nos valores constitucionais. Em 2011, o Supremo Tribunal Federal reconheceu o direito à união homoafetiva (ADI n. 4.277 e ADPF n. 132) e, em 2018, reconheceu aos transgêneros o direito à substituição de prenome e sexo diretamente no registro civil, independentemente da cirurgia de transgenitalização ou da realização de tratamentos hormonais ou patologizantes (ADI n. 4275). Tais decisões acarretam reflexos previdenciários que ainda não foram devidamente regulamentadas no âmbito infraconstitucional. Este livro se propõe a analisar alguns reflexos dessas transformações sociais e da jurisprudência na legislação previdenciária, considerando a mutação constitucional, com foco sobre o benefício de aposentadoria programada por idade, a relação de dependência na pensão por morte e o benefício de salário-maternidade. Sem ignorar a existência de desigualdades de gênero na sociedade brasileira, mas reconhecendo que devem ser objeto de soluções no âmbito da cultura e do direito do trabalho, o livro questiona a manutenção da diferença etária para a concessão do benefício para mulheres e homens, sob a ótica do equilíbrio financeiro e atuarial do sistema previdenciário.

Gender and women’s studies have formed part of the academic landscape for many years, but while the field is now established enough to have developed in depth and perspectives, there remain many areas of significance yet to be explored–most significantly, much of the work carried out has remained rooted in the Anglo-American context. Those working outside this context are increasingly aware of the need to understand women in different cultural contexts in order to determine whether, to what extent and how representations of women and cultural contexts are interactive and dynamic concepts. The current volume contributes to the growing interest in the field of women and culture in the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds and shows how women writers, researchers, teachers and students have always made waves to counteract the complacency, prejudice and tradition that threatens to ignore or subsume them. The volume draws on literary study–the starting point for much of the early work on gender in Spain, the Lusophone world and Latin America–but also goes beyond it, to discuss women’s interaction not only with literature but also with art, and language itself, in the Hispanic and Lusophone contexts. It acts as a showcase for contemporary scholarship undertaken in Hispanic and Lusophone gender studies, developing earlier insights and forging new ones, to refine the debate continuing in the subject. The contributors include both established scholars with a proven track record and promising newcomers to the field. The volume arises from the individual research projects and sustained discussions of Women in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (WiSPs), an organisation that exists to promote scholarship by and about women in the field of Iberian, Lusophone and Latin American Studies.
