Dumas White is the Sheriff of Uvalde County, a beautiful area on the edge of the Texas Hill Country where the Leona, Nueces, and Frio Rivers connect. It is the home of approximately twenty-five thousand farmers, ranchers, and sportsmen. It is also the temporary summer home of several thousand swimmers, tubers, and fishermen, and the alternate home of as many bird and deer hunters in the fall and winter. Dumas' usual job is to keep the locals and the visitors from hurting one another, but when a series of animal mutilations culminates in a brutal murder, his job becomes much more complicated. As the investigation progresses and the secrets of the small town are revealed like the slowly peeling skin of a rotting onion, Dumas begins to understand the importance of the many secrets he has protected over the years. When a drunken citizens confesses to the murder and claims to be a Vampire, Dumas has to examine his own motivations and dig into his own secrets before he can accept the truth. Forget everything you thought you knew about Vampires, because Chupacabra gives a whole new name to the blood-suckers.

The story of the diverse communities of Eastern Europe's borderlands in the centuries prior to World War II "A powerful combination of history and personal memoir . . . A richly contextual, skillfully woven historical study."--Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Focusing on the former province of Galicia, this book tells the story of Europe's eastern borderlands, stretching from the Baltic to the Balkans, through the eyes of the diverse communities of migrants who settled there for centuries and were murdered or forcibly removed from the borderlands in the course of World War II and its aftermath. Omer Bartov explores the fates and hopes, dreams and disillusionment of the people who lived there, and, through the stories they told about themselves, reconstructs who they were, where they came from, and where they were heading. It was on the borderlands that the expanding great empires--German, Austro-Hungarian, Russian, and Ottoman--overlapped, clashed, and disintegrated. The civilization of these borderlands was a mix of multiple cultures, languages, ethnic groups, religions, and nations that similarly overlapped and clashed. The borderlands became the cradle of modernity. Looking back at it tells us where we came from.

Galizien written by Martin Pollack and has been published by Suhrkamp Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-15 with Travel categories.

The Idea Of Galicia written by Larry Wolff and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-09 with History categories.

Galicia was created at the first partition of Poland in 1772 and disappeared in 1918. Yet, in slightly over a century, the idea of Galicia came to have meaning for both the peoples who lived there and the Habsburg government that ruled it. Indeed, its memory continues to exercise a powerful fascination for those who live in its former territories and for the descendants of those who emigrated out of Galicia. The idea of Galicia was largely produced by the cultures of two cities, Lviv and Cracow. Making use of travelers' accounts, newspaper reports, and literary works, Wolff engages such figures as Emperor Joseph II, Metternich, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Ivan Franko, Stanisław Wyspiański, Tadeusz "Boy" Żeleński, Isaac Babel, Martin Buber, and Bruno Schulz. He shows the exceptional importance of provincial space as a site for the evolution of cultural meanings and identities, and analyzes the province as the framework for non-national and multi-national understandings of empire in European history.

With the end of World War I, a new Republic of Poland emerged on the maps of Europe, made up of some of the territory from the first Polish Republic, including Wolyn and Wilno, and significant parts of Belarus, Upper Silesia, Eastern Galicia, and East Prussia. The resulting conglomeration of ethnic groups left many substantial minorities wanting independence. The approach of World War II provided the minorities' leaders a new opportunity in their nationalist movements, and many sided with one or the other of Poland's two enemies--the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany--in hopes of achieving their goals at the expense of Poland and its people. Based on primary and secondary sources in numerous languages (including Polish, German, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Russian and English), this work examines the roles of the ethnic minorities in the collapse of the Republic and in the atrocities that occurred under the occupying troops. The Polish government's response to mounting ethnic tensions in the prewar era and its conduct of the war effort are also examined.
