Excerpt from Gamble Gold His grandmother was a dear old lady with a white cap and grey ringlets and a merry face like a rosy wrinkled apple. She had rather a bad memory, but this did not matter much, for to balance it she was able to foresee all sorts of things that were going to happen, and some things which never happened at all. Now she lived on the hill-side, by the edge of a little waterfall, the stream from which ran into a lake at the foot of the mountains from whence it Sprang. Her hut was a sort of tent or wigwam made of arched branches of trees covered with deer-skins and sacking. All round the hut were larch-trees and Scotch firs which gave a pleasant shade in the hot summer days - and in the days I am writing of it was always summer weather. Winter had been abolished and sent to the North Pole, where any one who wanted it went after it; but in Glen Guile it was always summer, and if you wanted a day's snow balling, you went up to the high mountains at the back of the woods, and had as much as you liked of it. Excerpt from Light Come, Light Go: Gambling Gamesters Wagers the Turf All conditions of life being more or less dis quieted either with the cares of gaining or of keeping money, it is but natural that mankind should be allured by the idea of discovering and utilising an easy and quick road to riches. Alas, the prospect of speedy wealth, which exercises such an irresistible fascination over certain natures, is in the vast majority of cases nothing but a delusive mirage, as tempting to covetous folly as the philosopher's stone. Indeed, the votaries of chance in a great measure resemble the alchemists of old, who were ever seeking, but never found, a method of producing untold gold. Excerpt from Betting Gambling: A National Evil Until comparatively recent years, betting and gambling were largely confined in this country to the wealthy few. Now, however, the practice has spread so widely among all classes of the community that those who know the facts name gambling and drinking as national evils of almost equal magnitude. There is no doubt that the social conscience is as yet only very partially awakened to the wide spread character of the gambling evil and to its grievous consequences. Like a cancer, the evil thing has spread its poisonous roots throughout the length and breadth of the land, carrying with them, where they strike, misery, poverty, weakened character, and crime. Excerpt from The World's Gold, Its Geology, Extraction, and Political Economy In the slow evolution of monetary systems, gold has finally emerged as without dispute the metal best adapted for money in developed commercial countries. "The battle of the standards," waged bitterly within the memory of men still young, has ended with a triumph so complete that there is no longer pretender bold enough to dispute the sovereignty of gold. There may be question whether silver coins are not still preferable in large amounts for use in the undeveloped countries of the Orient, but even in those regions it is generally recognised that the monetary systems of the future must at least be based upon gold as the unit and standard of value. It is significant of this evolution that a book should find a place in this scientific series which treats distinctively of gold as the money metal of civilised nations. It is a well-known fact that much of the gold which is now being poured into the monetary systems of the world could never have been extracted from the earth with profit under the old methods of production. Long ago, the alluvial deposits which made the fortunes of the Californian "forty-niners" and of the pioneers in Australia were to a large degree exhausted. Excerpt from Gambling Outrages: Or Improving the Breed, of Horses at the Expense of Public Morals For years the laws against gambling have been openly violated. Professional gamblers from this and other States have been permitted to go from county to county with their unlawful paraphernalia and ply their schemes of robbery, surrounded by an atmosphere filled with rumors of bribery and corrup tion of officials. Public sentiment has sustained the enforcement of the laws against these dishonest schemes of getting another's property for nothing in New York and Queens Counties. Excerpt from A Controversy Between Erskine and W. M. On the Practicability of Suppressing Gambling The second reason which stands in open opposition to the suppression of gambling is, the aspect in which a law, inhibiting it, is regarded by the masses. They feel that their money is their own, and that they have the same natural, and ought to have the same legal; right, to invest it as they please, as is ao corded, by the law, to the tobacco, cotton or calico gambler; for, they say, the man that speculates in cotton, tobacco, calico, or anything else, is staking his money at a risk upon a chance, and is, to all intents and purposes, literally a gambler; and the only answer which can be given to this argument, is, they are neither so called or regarded. That is true, but not a whit truer than that they are, nevertheless, above and beyond all denial, gam hlers - often reckless gamblers. I do not employ the term in its technical, but its literal sense; and, between a fair game of fare and a sharp trade in cotton, there exists but one striking differ ence. In the cotton operation, ten thousand words are inter changed, and it is rarely ever the case that ten thousand words are. Interchanged, without the direct, sometimes innocent, at other. Times malignant, infliction of more or less damage upon. The truth. Whereas, at faro, not a word is spoken - ifyou win, you do not have to lie to do it, and if you lose your last dollar, you can then quote the message; of Francis the First, to his, mother: All is lost save honor.
