Een reis om de wereld in twaalf maanden. Boudewijn Büch jaagt zichzelf en de lezer de wereld over en de geschiedenis door. Hij reisde in 1998 onder andere naar Amerika, Zuid-Afrika, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland en Italië. Maar waar hij ook komt, hij zoekt overal hetzelfde: een goed oosters restaurant, een lekker bed en bovenal bevrediging van zijn ongekende verzameldrift. Wanneer hij leest over de Britse expeditie van 1807 naar Brazilië is hij hevig gefascineerd maar ook ongerust: als hij niet oppast heeft hij er een passie bij, en hij verzamelt al alles (ook porseleinen beeldjes, theelepeltjes en vlaggetjes) over Goethe, de coelacant, Napoleon, de Boerenoorlog, dodo's, foute Nederlanders, Amerikaanse presidenten en nog veel meer buitenissige zaken. Bijna dwangmatig bezoekt hij overal waar hij komt de plaatselijke musea - hoe suf ook - en rammelt hij aan de deur van elke boekhandel en antiquariaat. Voor Boudewijn Büch is 1998 het jaar van de Boerenoorlog, Andy Warhol en bovenal van Goethe, over wie hij op diverse locaties een veertiendelige documentaire maakt. Terwijl de andere leden van de televisieploeg vanwege het WK-voetbal aan de buis gekluisterd zitten, neust Büch in zijn cd-rom met het werk van Goethe in de geleerde 'Sophien Ausgabe', honderdtweeëndertig delen op één schijfje. In de koloniale periode werd het buitenlandse beleid van Nederland vanzelfsprekend in belangrijke mate bepaald door de belangen van Nederland-Indië. De betrekkingen met Engeland en de Verenigde Staten werden er verregaand, die met China, Japan en Australië zelfs uitsluitend door bepaald. “Het buitenland” was voor Indië zelf ook nog iets anders dan voor Nederland; Indië had zijn eigen buurladen. Daartoe behoorde ook die andere Maleise archipel, de Philippijnen. Na meer dan drie eeuwen deel uitgemaakt te hebben van het Spaanse wereldrijk werden de Philippijnen in het begin van de twintigste eeuw door de Verenigde Staten veroverd. De Amerikanen leverden daartoe een strijd met de Spanjaarden, maar meer nog met de in 1898 uitgeroepen Philippijne Republiek, die pas na drie jaar werd verslagen. De Verenigde Staten ontdekten vervolgens dat zij als het ware de sluitsteen vormden van de Europese koloniale overheersing in Zuidoost-Azië. Bij veel Amerikanen wekte dat weerzin, maar ook de voorstanders van het Philippijnse “avontuur” lieten herhaaldelijk uitkomen dat zij niet wilden worden gerekend tot de “koloniale club” van Engeland, Frankrijk en Nederland. In 1916 en 1934 zetten de Verenigde Staten, onder impuls van de Democratische Partij, de beslissende wetgevende stappen in de richting van Philippijnse onafhankelijkheid. Nederlands-Indië heeft veertig jaar met dit buurland zich langzaam uitbreidende betrekkingen onderhouden. Zij worden in dit boek op drie niveaus onderzocht: dat van de Nederlandse regering in Den Haag, de Indische regering in Batavia en de Indonesische nationalistische beweging. Dat gebeurt in het ruimere verband van de internationale verhoudingen, die vooral door Engeland met de Comminwealth, de Verenigde Staten en Japan werden bepaald. Deze studie behandelt als eerste de relatie tussen de Philippijnen en Nederlands-Indië en is het enige Nederlandstalige overzicht van het Amerikaanse bestuur van de Philippijnen. De auteur heeft hiertoe uitgebreid onderzoek verricht in Nederlandse, Amerikaanse en Engelse archieven.

Alltranslation is a compromise-the effort to be literal and the e. ffort to be idiomatic BenjaminJowett (1817-93) This book is designed to provide intermediate and advanced students of English with practice in the translation ofDutch texts into English. It contains fifty prose passages, most of them taken from recent Dutch novels or journals, all of them tried out on several generations of our own students in the 'pre-kandidaatsfase' of their studies at the English Department of the University of Nijmegen. In these respects, it is not spectacularly different from many other books ofits kind. We have, however, tried to offer the student rather more support in his translation work than is usually clone: each text is provided with a suggested translation of the first few lines and with notes containing information on grammar and idiom, sometimes preceded by supplementary material from British or American sources. The second part of the book comprises a short contrastive grammar speciallywritten to meet theneeds oftheuser. In this way wehope to offer a self-contained translation course which reinforces the interdependence of grammar, vocabulary, textual interpretation and style. Most ofthe texts in this book are reproduced in substantially the sameform and wording as in the original sources. In some cases editing was necessary in order, for example, to reduce long articles to more manageable proportions. In no cases, however, were we moved to doctor the originals in order to disambiguate them or to make them easier to translate.
