Since the late 1990s approaches to women's reproductive health has shifted from a service-based model to a human rights approach. This approach associates reproductive health with freedom from discrimination and enjoyment of a satisfying and safe sex life, and full access to information and services related to reproduction. In spite of this shift, and the global effort to promote women's reproductive health through the enhancement of human rights and gender equality, progress has been very slow. In this book the author fills a much-needed empirical study of women's reproductive health. The author assesses data from 137 developing countries (or areas) and challenges the prevailing bioscience and public health models by linking women's reproductive health to gender equality measures and development policies. Discussion on abortion rights, regional variations and reproductive health needs among refugees and internally displaced persons are also discussed. This is a timely study which provides a theoretical and social policy basis for monitoring and improving women's reproductive health in developing countries. This is particularly important in the light of insufficient research in the field and a lack of analysis on the empirical and theoretical linkages between reproductive health and gender equality. The book will be of interest to researchers, professionals and students interested in women's health issues, gender/women's studies and human rights.

What is women’s empowerment, and how and why does it matter for women’s health? These are questions that the University of California Global Health Institute’s (UCGHI) Center of Expertise (COE) on Women’s Health, Gender, and Empowerment aimed to answer with this book. Since 2009 the COE has brought together a multidisciplinary network of experts from across the University of California (UC) campuses and departments, along with their global partners, to advance research and education on what has become a capstone theme in the global health and development agenda: women’s and girls’ empowerment and health. Women’s Empowerment and Global Health demonstrates the outcomes of COE's commitment to advance pedagogy and present the work of thought leaders in this domain. Despite the rise of a human rights–based approach to health and increasing awareness of the synergies between women’s health and empowerment, a lack of consensus remains as to how to operationalize empowerment in ways that improve health. Women’s Empowerment and Global Health presents thirteen multidisciplinary case studies that demonstrate how science and advocacy can be creatively merged to enhance the agency and status of girls and women. The book is organized into two sections, the first focused on sociocultural, educational, and health systems interventions, and the second on economic, policy, and structural interventions. Seven of the chapters are enriched by complementary videos that provide readers with context about programs in India, Kenya, the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Women’s Empowerment and Global Health provides the next generation of researchers and practitioners, as well as students in global and public health, sociology, anthropology, women’s studies, law, business, and medicine, with cutting-edge and inspirational examples of programs that point the way toward achieving women’s equality and the positive outcome of empowerment on health.

Women represent the majority of people working to improve health outcomes in communities, non-governmental and multilateral organizations, both as paid and unpaid health and social care workers. So why is it that when it comes to leadership positions, we have a governance system that privileges men and what can we do to redress the imbalance? This ground-breaking collection explores the leadership roles that women hold in global health, teasing out the routes women have taken to leadership, the challenges they have faced, and what has facilitated their journey. It brings to the fore the stories of women on the frontlines of this struggle from around the world, highlighting and complementing these stories with theoretical and analytical explorations of the structures and systems that help or hinder the process. Among the topics explored: Gendered Institutions in Global Health Gender, Peace, and Health: Promoting Human Security with Women’s Leadership Academic Journal Publishing: A Pathway to Global Health Leadership Women in Health Systems Leadership: Demystifying the Labyrinth Women’s Leadership in Global Health: Evolution Will Not Bring Equality The book is a rallying call to arms to redress gender inequality and celebrate the many ways in which women are taking the lead in supporting the health of their communities internationally. Women and Global Health Leadership is a must-read for those working in or studying global health. It is also a primer that aims to support other women in their efforts and struggles to succeed in a highly unfair and unequal world. The book will engage ministers of health, policy-makers, practitioners, academicians, students, researchers, healthcare workers, health service managers, and members of multilateral organizations. By highlighting key barriers and facilitators to women in global health leadership, organizations can use this book to help inform the development of institutional policies and procedures to support women in leadership positions across academic, health workforce, and global health governance systems. It also can be used within postgraduate courses focusing on the global heath workforce, leadership and management, and women’s studies.
