The esculent Lycopersicon esculentum, long thought to be poisonous, has become a major U. S. food crop and source of vitamins and minerals, thanks largely to genetic modification and new production technology Rick (1978) Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. ) is one of the most important solana ceous vegetable crops grown worldwide under outdoor and indoor conditions. It has become an important commercial crop so far as the area, production, industrial values and its contribution to human nutrition is concerned. During the past few decades tremendous developments have contributed to the knowledge and understanding of various areas of genetics, breeding and biotechnology and voluminous literature has been generated. The purpose of preparing this monograph is to give a comprehensive up-to-date treatment to the various aspects of genetic improvement of tomato. The emphasis has been placed on cytology, classical and molecular genetics, reproductive biology, germplasm resources, hybrid seed production, use of wild taxa, selection/ breeding methods, breeding for abiotic and biotic stresses, processing and quality breeding, improvement for mechanical harvesting, and biotechnology: tissue culture, protoplast fusion, and genetic transformation. These topics are presented in 22 different chapters. However, a few aspects have been discussed in more than one chapter. For example, seed production is treated in chapters 1, 4 and 8; molecular biology/genetic engineering in chapters 3 and 22 and heterosis in chapters 8 and 16.

Tomato is one of the most important vegetable crops cultivated all over the world for table and processing purposes. In many parts of the world including North Indian plains, its fruit harvest duration is short and a period of glut and low prices is followed by scarcity and high prices in the market. The dearth of processing facilities raises the demand for cultivars having extended shelf-life so that the fruits can be transported to distant markets or stored to exploit local markets. A few mutant genes that interfere with normal tomato ripening are slow ripening alcobaca (alc), ripening inhibitor (rin) and non-ripening (nor). These genes in homozygous form considerably extend the shelf-life of tomato fruits but develop poor colour and inferior flavour. This monograph provides insights in to the development and identification of F1 hybrids, heterozygous for rin, nor and alc alleles having high yield, superior flavour, better shelf-life and extended harvest duration, and offer the possibility of their commercial cultivation. This book should be especially useful to tomato breeders across the world who are interested in genetic improvement of tomato for shelf-life, yield and quality.

Tomato cultivation is a major economic activity in many countries of the world. Thus, strategic efforts should be directed towards mitigating production constraints that limit overall yields and quality. In addressing some of these constraints, researchers are developing and using varieties of modern and innovative techniques to improve local tomato germplasm, make rapid genetic gains, and breed for varieties with resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. This book focuses on recent advances in genomics and genetic improvement of the tomato crop, and production systems, and center around the following themes: (i) disease and pest management in tomato production, and (ii) breeding tools and improvement of the tomato.

The tomato is commercially important throughout the world both for the fresh fruit market and the processed food industries. It is grown in a wide range of climates in the field, under protection in plastic greenhouses and in heated glasshouses. Genetic, physiological and pathological investigations frequently adopt the tomato plant as a convenient subject. Hitherto, much of the information on tomatoes has been fragmented: tomatoes grown in the field and under protection have been considered separately and the more fundamental findings from research have often failed to reach those involved directly or indirectly in commercial crop production. Similarly, the research scientist is often unaware of the problems of commercial crop production and the possible relevance of his work to the crop. This book is an attempt to rectify that situation. By giving a thorough scientific review of all factors influencing tomato production systems, it is hoped that this book will prove useful to students, researchers and commercial producers alike. It gives the basis for the develop ment of improved cultivars, the formulation of strategies for managing pest, disease and disorder problems and the production of high yields of good quality fruit as well as suggesting important areas for scientific initiatives. The extensive bibliographies provide a comprehensive database for tomato researchers. Such a vast subject could not be covered with authority by anyone author.

Bacterial wilt caused by Pseudomonas solanacearum is a serious plant disease in tropics and warm climate regions in the world. Agrobacterium mediated transformation was used for introduction of Xa21 gene for enhanced resistance to bacterial wilt in tomato cultivars. Factors effecting transformation such as pre-selection, preculturing of explants with acetosyringone had improved transformation efficiency. There are very few reports addressing the molecular mechanism of the plant responses to bacterial attack. Tomato cultivars were differentiated on the basis of their responses to bacterial wilt strain in to resistant and susceptible cultivars. Proteomic profiling was done for understanding of bacterial defenses. Molecular chaperones such as HSP70, 60 kDa chaperonin, protein disulfide isomerase & apical membrane antigen are speculated to have role in plant defenses against bacterial infection. Peroxiredoxin, ATP synthase, S-adenosyl methionine synthase, arginase and iron ABC transporter are other candidate proteins speculated for plant defense via JA and SA pathway.
