The book 'Genetic Makeup' is made up of short stories. They are mainly about real life issues and growth. A quote from 'Paradise on Earth?' (based in Kashmir) shows this. '...A life of learning and learning to love, bringing pure and natural beauty in every step we take, every step a reflection of a time period. Genetics and Genetic Engineering explores the great discoveries in genetics-the study of genes and the inherited information they contain. Genetic engineering alters the genetic make-up of an organism using techniques that remove heritable material or that introduce DNA prepared outside the organism either directly into the host or into a cell that is then fused or hybridized with the host. Genetic engineering, also called genetic modification, is the direct manipulation of an organism's genes using biotechnology. New DNA is obtained by either isolating or copying the genetic material of interest using recombinant DNA methods or by artificially synthesizing the DNA. A construct is usually created and used to insert this DNA into the host organism. The first recombinent DNA molecule was made by Paul Berg in 1972 by combining DNA from the monkey virus SV40with the lambda virus. As well as inserting genes, the process can be used to remove, or "e;knock out"e;, genes. The new DNA can be inserted randomly, or targeted to a specific part of the genome. Genetic engineering, also called genetic modification, is the direct manipulation of an organism's genome using biotechnology. Insulin-producing bacteria were commercialized in 1982 andgenetically modified food has been sold since 1994. Glofish, the first GMO designed as a pet, was first sold in the United States December in 2003. Genetic engineering techniques have been applied in numerous fields including research, agriculture, industrial biotechnology, and medicine. Enzymes used in laundry detergent and medicines such as insulin and human growth hormone are now manufactured in GM cells, experimental GM cell lines and GM animals such as mice or zebrafish are being used for research purposes, and genetically modified crops have been commercialized.
