"Genomics in Asia" focuses on issues dealing with the development and application of molecular biology and bioengineering technologies in Asian societies and cultures. The workshop on which this book is based aimed to gain an insight into bioethical issues with relation to the dynamics of Asian societies, cultures and religions. It was to generate debate on Asian Genomics and create a basis for comparative research into the relationship between the development and application of modern genetics, cultural values, and local interests in Asian societies. The papers first of all reflect a great variety of bioethical views discussed from the angle of different disciplinary and cultural backgrounds, creating a basis on which a further comparison between different local knowledge systems in relation to genomic practices will be feasible. This book provides insights on research into the social, political and ethical aspects of genomics, and reflects the bioethical experiences of researchers from Japan, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Pakistan, India and Malaysia. The subjects of discussion vary from genetics in China to religious perspectives on cloning and genetic therapy. Themes include the commercial and medical application of new bioengineering technologies, such as the impact of preventive genetic medicine, genetic counselling, genetically modified organisms [GMOs] and stem-cell research on wealth distribution, cultural traditions, social well-being, and political and legal regulations and institutions. In the study of bioengineering in Asia, various perspectives were brought together at a concrete research level. The authors tried to avoid macro-concepts incorporated by dichotomies of East and West and to acquire new insights into the relationship between local knowledge systems and cultures and interests groups on the one hand and the constellation of various interests of scientific research, governments and MNCs on the other.

Fungible Life written by Aihwa Ong and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-07 with Social Science categories.

In Fungible Life Aihwa Ong explores the dynamic world of cutting-edge bioscience research, offering critical insights into the complex ways Asian bioscientific worlds and cosmopolitan sciences are entangled in a tropical environment brimming with the threat of emergent diseases. At biomedical centers in Singapore and China scientists map genetic variants, disease risks, and biomarkers, mobilizing ethnicized "Asian" bodies and health data for genomic research. Their differentiation between Chinese, Indian, and Malay DNA makes fungible Singapore's ethnic-stratified databases that come to "represent" majority populations in Asia. By deploying genomic science as a public good, researchers reconfigure the relationships between objects, peoples, and spaces, thus rendering "Asia" itself as a shifting entity. In Ong's analysis, Asia emerges as a richly layered mode of entanglements, where the population's genetic pasts, anxieties and hopes, shared genetic weaknesses, and embattled genetic futures intersect. Furthermore, her illustration of the contrasting methods and goals of the Biopolis biomedical center in Singapore and BGI Genomics in China raises questions about the future direction of cosmopolitan science in Asia and beyond.

High-throughput sequencing and functional genomics technologies have given us the human genome sequence as well as those of other experimentally, medically, and agriculturally important species, thus enabling large-scale genotyping and gene expression profiling of human populations. Databases containing large numbers of sequences, polymorphisms, structures, metabolic pathways, and gene expression profiles of normal and diseased tissues are rapidly being generated for human and model organisms. Bioinformatics is therefore gaining importance in the annotation of genomic sequences; the understanding of the interplay among and between genes and proteins; the analysis of the genetic variability of species; the identification of pharmacological targets; and the inference of evolutionary origins, mechanisms, and relationships. This proceedings volume contains an up-to-date exchange of knowledge, ideas, and solutions to conceptual and practical issues of bioinformatics by researchers, professionals, and industry practitioners at the 6th Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Conference held in Kyoto, Japan, in January 2008. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Recent Progress in Phylogenetic Combinatorics (185 KB). Contents: Recent Progress in Phylogenetic Combinatorics (A Dress); Predicting Nucleolar Proteins Using Support-Vector Machines (M Bod(r)n); Structure-Approximating Design of Stable Proteins in 2D HP Model Fortified by Cysteine Monomers (A H Khodabakhshi et al.); Seed Optimization Is No Easier than Optimal Golomb Ruler Design (B Ma & H Yao); Analysis of Structural Strand Asymmetry in Non-coding RNAs (J Wen et al.); Genome Halving with Double Cut and Join (R Warren & D Sankoff); Symbolic Approaches for Finding Control Strategies in Boolean Networks (C J Langmead & S K Jha); Optimal Algorithm for Finding DNA Motifs with Nucleotide Adjacent Dependency (F Y L Chin et al.); and other papers. Readership: Academics, researchers, and graduate students in bioinformatics and computer science.

Medical and Health Genomics of South Asia, a new volume in the Genomic and Precision Medicine in Clinical Practice series offers a thorough discussion of medical genomics as applied across South Asian nations, from India to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, as well as in South Asian populations abroad. Here, global chapter authors consider genomic variation and the population heterogeneity of genetic, infectious, and lifestyle diseases in South Asia; successful modes of population health management for these inherited disorders; and other applications of clinical genomics for improved individual health in the region. Adopting an applied approach, this book first reviews basic genomic models and population study formats, as well as the anthropological and genetic history of South Asia. The following sections examine genomic epidemiology and population health in the South Asian context; examples of genomic medicine's use in combating major health challenges in the region; genomic healthcare infrastructure; and related social, ethical, legal, and economic aspects central to impactful genomic medicine. Despite its focus on South Asian populations, this book acts as a practical example of applied medical genomics in the developing world, highlighting population health challenges with global prevalence. It also thoroughly addresses inherited disorders common not only to South Asian populations in the region, but also South Asian communities abroad.

Nutrigenomics seeks to understand the variability of the individual's response to food and the underlying mechanisms whereby foods exert their health-promoting activities. With a deeper molecular understanding of nutrition, we may some day be able to design diets that truly maximize an individual's potential for health and wellness. Many Asian societies are currently experiencing a transition in diet-related morbidity and mortality. The identification and provision of an optimal diet relevant to all the people living in Asia is an extraordinary challenge as there exists a tremendous diversity in diet, dietary intake patterns, local culture, and nutritional needs. This volume explores the role of ethnic diversity, dietary patterns and genetic adaptation in determining individual nutrient requirements throughout the life-cycle. Conceptualized as an introductory publication providing a general overview as well as specific examples of the applications of concepts and methods, this publication will help scientists, medical, nutrition and other health professionals to learn more about the field of nutrigenomics.

This book presents the latest advances in rice genomics, genetics and breeding, with a special focus on their importance for rice biology and how they are breathing new life into traditional genetics. Rice is the main staple food for more than half of the world’s population. Accordingly, sustainable rice production is a crucial issue, particularly in Asia and Africa, where the population continues to grow at an alarming rate. The book’s respective chapters offer new and timely perspectives on the synergistic effects of genomics and genetics in novel rice breeding approaches, which can help address the urgent issue of providing enough food for a global population that is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050.
