¿Desde cuándo el trabajo es una virtud opuesta a la pereza? ¿Cómo se buscó transformar una sociedad de tributarios, esclavos y servidores en una de modernos trabajadores? ¿Cómo se conjugó el orden estamental de antiguo régimen con la ilustrada noción del trabajo? ¿Cómo pensar en este contexto las singularidades de los trabajos de hombres y de mujeres? Estas son algunas de las interrogantes con que este libro se interna en la ciudad de Santafé de Bogotá del siglo xviii. En ese camino van surgiendo otras preguntas, propias de las relaciones que se tejieron alrededor de una parte importante de la población considerada como “desordenada”, “poco dada al trabajo”, “ociosa y malentretenida”. Entre la historia y la antropología, esta investigación explora una serie de archivos y materiales que permiten comprender cómo las nociones de trabajo y pereza se construyeron una con relación a la otra tanto en Europa como en América y cómo se vivieron en la ciudad de Santafé de Bogotá al final de la Colonia.

A partir de la segunda mitad del siglo xviii, en la ciudad de Santafé de Bogotá aparece una reglamentación orientada a establecer un nuevo "orden" con medidas como censos de población, formación de gremios, encierro de pobres y mendigos en hospicios, creación de milicias urbanas, leyes antivagancia o control de chicherías. En la aplicación de estas disposiciones se consideraba a una parte importante de la población como desordenada, perezosa y poco dada al trabajo. A partir de la insistencia y la recurrencia de estas afirmaciones, vamos a realizar una reflexión sobre su concreción y naturaleza, sobre las costumbres que describían, sobre las actitudes que alababan o condenaban y sobre las relaciones sociales y las ideas que las sustentaban. Buscamos comprender una serie de experiencias históricas frente al trabajo apoyándonos en su contrario: la pereza. El estudio de la relación pereza/trabajo nos permite una dinámica particularmente interesante. Por un lado, la pereza, una manera de actuar, un comportamiento cotidiano e incluso hasta podría decirse personal, pensado en el contexto de las relaciones de trabajo, adquiere una dimensión social, política, económica y cultural. Por el otro, el trabajo, un valor trascendental y generalizado, pensado a partir de las simples actitudes de pereza, devela las experiencias cotidianas en las que se ha construido y se construye su cambiante realidad social. Pensar esta oposición en su relación permite también comprender cómo una noción se construyó con la otra y cómo están íntimamente relacionadas en sus procesos históricos tanto en Europa como en América.

Much of our understanding of local economic development is based on large urban agglomerations as nodes of innovation and competitive advantage, connecting territories to global value chains. However, this framework cannot so easily be applied to peripheral regions and secondary cities in either the Global South or the North. This book explores some of the risks associated with sustainable peace in Colombia. The book intentionally steers away from the emphasis on the drug trade as the main resource fueling Colombian conflicts and violence, a topic that has dominated scholarly attention. Instead, it focuses on the links that have been configured over decades of armed conflict between legal resources (such as bananas, coffee, coal, flowers, gold, ferronickel, emeralds, and oil), conflict dynamics, and crime in several regions of Colombia. This work resituates the Spanish Caribbean as an extension of the Luso-African Atlantic world from the late sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth century, when the union of the Spanish and Portuguese crowns facilitated a surge in the transatlantic slave trade. After the catastrophic decline of Amerindian populations on the islands, two major African provenance zones, first Upper Guinea and then Angola, contributed forced migrant populations with distinct experiences to the Caribbean. They played a dynamic role in the social formation of early Spanish colonial society in the fortified port cities of Cartagena de Indias, Havana, Santo Domingo, and Panama City and their semirural hinterlands. David Wheat is the first scholar to establish this early phase of the "Africanization" of the Spanish Caribbean two centuries before the rise of large-scale sugar plantations. With African migrants and their descendants comprising demographic majorities in core areas of Spanish settlement, Luso-Africans, Afro-Iberians, Latinized Africans, and free people of color acted more as colonists or settlers than as plantation slaves. These ethnically mixed and economically diversified societies constituted a region of overlapping Iberian and African worlds, while they made possible Spain's colonization of the Caribbean.

Monarchs throughout the ages have commissioned official histories that cast their reigns in a favorable light for future generations. These accounts, sanctioned and supported by the ruling government, often gloss over the more controversial aspects of a king's or queen’s time on the throne. Instead, they present highly selective and positive readings of a monarch’s contribution to national identity and global affairs. In Clio and the Crown, Richard L. Kagan examines the official histories of Spanish monarchs from medieval times to the middle of the 18th century. He expertly guides readers through the different kinds of official histories commissioned: those whose primary focus was the monarch; those that centered on the Spanish kingdom as a whole; and those that celebrated Spain’s conquest of the New World. In doing so, Kagan also documents the life and work of individual court chroniclers, examines changes in the practice of official history, and highlights the political machinations that influenced the redaction of such histories. Just as world leaders today rely on fast-talking press officers to explain their sometimes questionable actions to the public, so too did the kings and queens of medieval and early modern Spain. Monarchs often went to great lengths to exert complete control over the official history of their reign, physically intimidating historians, destroying and seizing manuscripts and books, rewriting past histories, and restricting history writing to authorized persons. Still, the larger practice of history writing—as conducted by nonroyalist historians, various scholars and writers, and even church historians—provided a corrective to official histories. Kagan concludes that despite its blemishes, the writing of official histories contributed, however imperfectly, to the practice of historiography itself.
