La toponímia és el conjunt de noms de lloc d'un territori determinat i, a la vegada, la branca de l'onomàstica que estudia els topònims. Aquests noms propis serveixen per anomenar llocs precisos i únics que tenen, pels homes i dones que hi han viscut, un caràcter particular que els distingeix de la resta. La majoria de topònims té un significat entenedor, o 'transparent', perquè descriuen clarament els elements geogràfics a què es refereixen, però també hi ha noms de lloc que, en el llenguatge actual, no tenen sentit o no descriuen el lloc que anomenen. Aquest darrer grup de topònims ha intrigat tant els estudiosos com la gent del poble fins al punt que s'han cercat explicacions -a vegades fantasioses- del seu origen. La toponímia, doncs, es troba enmig d'una veritable cruïlla de disciplines científiques: els lingüistes hi cerquen traces de la formació i l'evolució de la mateixa llengua, els geògrafs utilitzen els topònims per identificar els llocs i comprendre l'organització de l'espai, els historiadors els prenen per assenyalar els canvis produïts en el paisatge i en la societat al llarg del temps i els estudiosos de la cultura popular extreuen dels topònims la percepció d'un territori per part dels seus habitants.

A lot of what we know about “exotic languages” is owed to the linguistic activities of missionaries. They had the languages put into writing, described their grammar and lexicon, and worked towards a standardization, which often came with Eurocentric manipulation. Colonial missionary work as intellectual (religious) conquest formed part of the Europeans' political colonial rule, although it sometimes went against the specific objectives of the official administration. In most cases, it did not help to stop (or even reinforced) the displacement and discrimination of those languages, despite oftentimes providing their very first (sometimes remarkable, sometimes incorrect) descriptions. This volume presents exemplary studies on Catholic and Protestant missionary linguistics, in the framework of the respective colonial situation and policies under Spanish, German, or British rule. The contributions cover colonial contexts in Latin America, Africa, and Asia across the centuries. They demonstrate how missionaries dealing with linguistic analyses and descriptions cooperated with colonial institutions and how their linguistic knowledge contributed to European domination.

Uno de los aspectos importantes de este libro estriba en la explicación de cómo se podrían traducir los poemas, leyendas y cuentos en náhuatl de manera que no pierdan el sentido del mensaje original, pero que a su vez sean claros y se ajusten al mundo extralingüístico y lengua actual para su comprensión.
