This book is intended as a comprehensive treatment of group-based cryptography accessible to both mathematicians and computer scientists, with emphasis on the most recent developments in the area. To make it accessible to a broad range of readers, the authors started with a treatment of elementary topics in group theory, combinatorics, and complexity theory, as well as providing an overview of classical public-key cryptography. Then some algorithmic problems arising in group theory are presented, and cryptosystems based on these problems and their respective cryptanalyses are described. This volume is the result of the Third DIMACS Implementation Challenge that was conducted as part of the 1993-94 Special year on Parallel Algorithms. The Implementation Challenge was formulated in order to provide a forum for a concerted effort to study effective algorithms for combinatorial problems and to investigate opportunities for massive speed-ups on parallel computers. The challenge invluded two problem areas for research study: tree searching, algorithms, used in game search and combinatorial optimization, for example, and algorithms for sparse graphs. Participants at sites in the US and Europe undertook projects from November 1993 through October 1994. The workshop was held at DIMACS in November 1994. Participants were encouraged to share test results, to rework their implementations considering feedback at the workshop, and to submit a final report for the proceedings. Nine papers were selected for this volume.

The ICMS Developer's Meeting is an international congress for which the main theme is mathematical software. The 2010 meeting was the third of a series of meetings of similar theme, the ?rst being held in Beijing, China in 2002,and the second in Castro-Urdiales, Spain in 2006. The ?eld of mathematics has numerous branches, and in each branch we ?nd that algorithms, and also implementations and applications of software s- tems, are studied. Researchers who endeavor to make such studies also have international meetings within their speci'c branches of mathematics, and these meetings have made signi'cant contributions to the ?elds in which they lie. The ICMS (International Congresseson Mathematical Software), on the other hand, is a general (not branch speci'c) meeting on mathematical software, which is held every four years, and is a rare opportunity for developers of mathematical softwarefrom di'erent branchesof mathematics, as well as mathematicians who are interested in mathematical software, to gather together.
