Geometric Computation: Foundations for Design describes the mathematical and computational concepts that are central to the practical application of design computation in a manner tailored to the visual designer. Uniquely pairing key topics in code and geometry, this book develops the two key faculties required by designers that seek to integrate computation into their creative practice: an understanding of the structure of code in object-oriented programming, and a proficiency in the fundamental geometric constructs that underlie much of the computational media in visual design.

This book is the essential guide to the pedagogical and industry-inspired considerations that must shape how BIM is taught and learned. It will help academics and professional educators to develop programmes that meet the competences required by professional bodies and prepare both graduates and existing practitioners to advance the industry towards higher efficiency and quality. To date, systematic efforts to integrate pedagogical considerations into the way BIM is learned and taught remain non-existent. This book lays the foundation for forming a benchmark around which such an effort is made. It offers principles, best practices, and expected outcomes necessary to BIM curriculum and teaching development for construction-related programs across universities and professional training programmes. The aim of the book is to: Highlight BIM skill requirements, threshold concepts, and dimensions for practice; Showcase and introduce tried-and-tested practices and lessons learned in developing BIM-related curricula from leading educators; Recognise and introduce the baseline requirements for BIM education from a pedagogical perspective; Explore the challenges, as well as remedial solutions, pertaining to BIM education at tertiary education; Form a comprehensive point of reference, covering the essential concepts of BIM, for students; Promote and integrate pedagogical consideration into BIM education. This book is essential reading for anyone involved in BIM education, digital construction, architecture, and engineering, and for professionals looking for guidance on what the industry expects when it comes to BIM competency.

A collection of timely new scholarship, Repair: Sustainable Design Futures investigates repair as a contemporary expression of empowerment, agency, and resistance to our unmaking of the world and the environment. Repair is an act, metaphor, and foundation for opening up a dialogue about design’s role in proposing radically different social, environmental, and economic futures. Thematically expansive and richly illustrated, with over 125 visuals, this volume features an international, interdisciplinary group of contributors from across the design spectrum whose voices and artwork speak to how we might address our broken social and physical worlds. Organized around reparative thinking and practices, the book includes 30 long and short chapters, photo essays, and interviews that focus on multiple responses to fractured systems, relationships, cities, architecture, objects, and more. Repair will encourage students, academics, researchers, and practitioners in art, design and architecture practice and theory, cultural studies, environment and sustainability, to discuss, engage, and rethink the act of repair and its impact on our society and environment.

Computational geometry emerged as a discipline in the seventies and has had considerable success in improving the asymptotic complexity of the solutions tobasicgeometricproblemsincludingconstructionsofdatastructures, convex hulls, triangulations, Voronoi diagrams and geometric arrangements as well as geometric optimisation. However, in the mid-nineties, it was recognized that the computational geometry techniques were far from satisfactory in practice and a vigorous e?ort has been undertaken to make computational geometry more practical. This e?ort led to major advances in robustness, geometric software engineering and experimental studies, and to the development of a large library of computational geometry algorithms, Cgal. The goal of this book is to take into consideration the multidisciplinary nature of the problem and to provide solid mathematical and algorithmic foundationsfore?ectivecomputationalgeometryforcurvesandsurfaces. This book covers two main approaches. In a ?rst part, we discuss exact geometric algorithms for curves and s- faces. We revisit two prominent data structures of computational geometry, namely arrangements (Chap. 1) and Voronoi diagrams (Chap. 2) in order to understand how these structures, which are well-known for linear objects, behave when de?ned on curved objects. The mathematical properties of these structures are presented together with algorithms for their construction. To ensure the e?ectiveness of our algorithms, the basic numerical computations that need to be performed are precisely speci?ed, and tradeo?s are considered between the complexity of the algorithms (i. e. the number of primitive calls), and the complexity of the primitives and their numerical stability. Computing is quickly making much of geometry intriguing not only for philosophers and mathematicians, but also for scientists and engineers. What is the core set of topics that a practitioner needs to study before embarking on the design and implementation of a geometric system in a specialized discipline? This book attempts to find the answer. Every programmer tackling a geometric computing problem encounters design decisions that need to be solved. This book reviews the geometric theory then applies it in an attempt to find that elusive "right" design.

Curvilinear Micromagnetism written by Denys Makarov and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-02 with Science categories.
This is the first book providing overview of magnetism in curved geometries, highlighting numerous peculiarities emerging from geometrically curved magnetic objects such as curved wires, shells, as well as complex three-dimensional structures. Extending planar two-dimensional structures into the three-dimensional space has become a general trend in multiple disciplines across electronics, photonics, plasmonics and magnetics. This approach provides the means to modify conventional and even launch novel functionalities by tailoring the local curvature of an object. The book covers the theory of curvilinear micromagnetism as well as experimental studies of geometrically curved magnets including both fabrication and characterization. With its coverage of fundamental aspects, together with exploration of numerous applications across magnonics, bio-engineering, soft robotics and shapeable magnetoelectronics, this edited collection is ideal for all scientists in academia and industry seeking an overview and wishing to keep abreast of advances in the novel field of curvilinear micromagnetism. It provides easy but comprehensive access to the field for newcomers, and can be used for graduate-level courses on this subject.

From the reviews: "This book offers a coherent treatment, at the graduate textbook level, of the field that has come to be known in the last decade or so as computational geometry. ... ... The book is well organized and lucidly written; a timely contribution by two founders of the field. It clearly demonstrates that computational geometry in the plane is now a fairly well-understood branch of computer science and mathematics. It also points the way to the solution of the more challenging problems in dimensions higher than two." #Mathematical Reviews#1 "... This remarkable book is a comprehensive and systematic study on research results obtained especially in the last ten years. The very clear presentation concentrates on basic ideas, fundamental combinatorial structures, and crucial algorithmic techniques. The plenty of results is clever organized following these guidelines and within the framework of some detailed case studies. A large number of figures and examples also aid the understanding of the material. Therefore, it can be highly recommended as an early graduate text but it should prove also to be essential to researchers and professionals in applied fields of computer-aided design, computer graphics, and robotics." #Biometrical Journal#2

Rethinking Basic Design In Architectural Education written by Mine Ozkar and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-27 with Architecture categories.
Rethinking Basic Design in Architectural Education provides historical and computational insights into beginning design education for architecture. Inviting the readers to briefly forget what is commonly known as basic design, it delivers the account of two educators, Denman W. Ross and Arthur W. Dow, from the turn of the twentieth century in Northeast America, interpreting key aspects of their methodology for teaching foundations for design and art. This alternate intellectual context for the origins of basic design as a precursor to computational design complements the more haptic, more customized, and more open-source design and fabrication technologies today. Basic design described and illustrated here as a form of low-tech computation offers a setting for the beginning designer to consciously experience what it means to design. Individualized dealings with materials, tools, and analytical techniques foster skills and attitudes relevant to creative and technologically adept designers. The book is a timely contribution to the theory and methods of beginning design education when fast-changing design and production technology demands change in architecture schools’ foundations curricula.
