It is both an initiative of and coordinated by the German Committee for Mathematical Modeling, Simulation and Optimization (KoMSO). Manufacturing companies have just begun to implement the concepts of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) on a larger scale. Still, this area is characterized by a rapid pace of technological change, blurring boundaries between physical, digital, and biological systems, and a quickly changing growing political, economic, and social environment -- leading to high uncertainty in decision making and many questions about the future development in this field. To provide guidance and inspiration for managers and academics on the future of digital manufacturing systems, this book presents the results of an extensive Delphi study on next-generation manufacturing systems, with a projection period of up to 2030. We analyzed almost 2000 quantitative estimations and more than 600 qualitative arguments from a large panel of industrial and academic experts from Europe, North America, and Asia. The book describes each of the 24 projections in detail, offering current case study examples and related research, as well as implications for policymakers, firms, and individuals. The empirical results also allowed us to build scenarios for the most probable future along the dimensions of governance, organization, capabilities, and interfaces from both a company-internal and an external (network) perspective.

1 Industrial Mathematics in Linz The Johannes-Kepler-University is situated in Linz, which is the industrial center of Austria. This location provides unique opportunities for cooperation between in dustry and a university which derives its name from one of the most eminent ap plied mathematicians of all times. The mathematics department was founded in the late Sixties, the first students graduated in 1974. In these boom times, they had no problems of finding jobs in industry. However, their employers were then more interested in their general training than in their specific mathematical skills. To change this, the department decided to actively seek cooperation with industry in what we called "problem seminars", where students were trained to solve (under guidance) real-world problems from local industry. Groundwork was already laid by a curriculum with special emphasis on numerical analysis, statistics, and optim ization. This work in problem seminars usually evolved into diploma theses. Inci dentally, in all projects presented here, students were involved at some stages. While the original motivation for cooperation with industry was educational, it turned out that most problems presented to us also led to interesting mathematical problems, so that nowadays our motivation is as much scientific as educational. When cooperating with industry, one cannot expect that the problems to be solved fall into one's special mathematical interest.

Realizing the need of interaction between universities and research groups in industry, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) was founded in 1986 by mathematicians from ten European universities. Since then it has been continuously extending and now it involves about all Euro pean countries. The aims of ECMI are • To promote the use of mathematical models in industry. • To educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts. • To operate on a European Scale. Mathematics, as the language of the sciences, has always played an im portant role in technology, and now is applied also to a variety of problems in commerce and the environment. European industry is increasingly becoming dependent on high technology and the need for mathematical expertise in both research and development can only grow. These new demands on mathematics have stimulated academic interest in Industrial Mathematics and many mathematical groups world-wide are committed to interaction with industry as part of their research activities. ECMI was founded with the intention of offering its collective knowledge and expertise to European Industry. The experience of ECMI members is that similar technical problems are encountered by different companies in different countries. It is also true that the same mathematical expertise may often be used in differing industrial applications.

Our stories of industrial innovation tend to focus on individual initiative and breakthroughs. With Making Jet Enginesin World War II, Hermione Giffard uses the case of the development of jet engines to offer a different way of understanding technological innovation, revealing the complicated mix of factors that go into any decision to pursue an innovative, and therefore risky technology. Giffard compares the approaches of Britain, Germany, and the United States. Each approached jet engines in different ways because of its own war aims and industrial expertise. Germany, which produced more jet engines than the others, did so largely as replacements for more expensive piston engines. Britain, on the other hand, produced relatively few engines—but, by shifting emphasis to design rather than production, found itself at war's end holding an unrivaled range of designs. The US emphasis on development, meanwhile, built an institutional basis for postwar production. Taken together, Giffard's work makes a powerful case for a more nuanced understanding of technological innovation, one that takes into account the influence of the many organizational factors that play a part in the journey from idea to finished product.

This volume is devoted to the life and work of the applied mathematician Professor Erhard Meister (1930-2001). He was a member of the editorial boards of this book series Operator The ory: Advances and Applications as well as of the journal Integral Equations and Operator Theory, both published by Birkhauser (now part of Springer-Verlag). Moreover he played a decisive role in the foundation of these two series by helping to establish contacts between Birkhauser and the founder and present chief editor of this book series after his emigration from Moldavia in 1974. The volume is divided into two parts. Part A contains reminiscences about the life of E. Meister including a short biography and an exposition of his professional work. Part B displays the wide range of his scientific interests through eighteen original papers contributed by authors with close scientific and personal relations to E. Meister. We hope that a great part of the numerous features of his life and work can be re-discovered from this book.
