This book, first published in 2000, is a systematic analysis of German public opinion at the outbreak of the Great War and the first treatment of the myth of the 'spirit of 1914', which stated that in August 1914 all Germans felt 'war enthusiasm' and that this enthusiasm constituted a critical moment in which German society was transformed. Jeffrey Verhey's powerful study demonstrates that the myth was historically inaccurate. Although intellectuals and much of the upper class were enthusiastic, the emotions and opinions of most of the population were far more complex and contradictory. The book further examines the development of the myth in newspapers, politics and propaganda, and the propagation and appropriation of this myth after the war. His innovative analysis sheds light on German experience of the Great War and on the role of political myths in modern German political culture.

Excerpt from Germany and the Prussian Spirit Like John Bull or Uncle Sam, these two German figures are, of course, merely the rough types of popular carica ture; but like all such types they represent an instinctive popular judgment which is seldom very much astray. In the case of Germany, as in other cases, the two figures are founded on broad truth, and they epitomize together in a very Significant way the origin and character of the new German Empire. The transformation of the one into the other is one of the most remarkable events in history. Even so Faust, calling in a dangerous doctor for the trouble of his soul, abandons his study, his books, his tubes and retorts, his doctor's gown, in order to live the worldly life he has hitherto despised. Australia declared war on the German Empire in August 1914 not only because as a Dominion within the British Empire it was considered a matter of course. In fact the Australian Government had made up its own mind about the nature of the German threat to national security. There were a number of influential writers at the time who contributed to the formation of a distinct Australian image of German militarism. Foremost among these was Professor George Arnold Wood, the first Challis Professor of History in Sydney, 1891-1928. He had analysed the nature of Prussian-German political culture from the stand point of a radical English-trained liberal and projected an accurate image of the enemy. Basic to this was Wood's carefully drawn distinction between the Germany of true culture and humanity on the one hand and the «barbarous feudal aristocracy» of Prussia on the other which had determined German political culture since Bismarck had founded the Reich under Prussia in 1871.
