Excerpt from Germany and the Prussian Spirit Like John Bull or Uncle Sam, these two German figures are, of course, merely the rough types of popular carica ture; but like all such types they represent an instinctive popular judgment which is seldom very much astray. In the case of Germany, as in other cases, the two figures are founded on broad truth, and they epitomize together in a very Significant way the origin and character of the new German Empire. The transformation of the one into the other is one of the most remarkable events in history. Even so Faust, calling in a dangerous doctor for the trouble of his soul, abandons his study, his books, his tubes and retorts, his doctor's gown, in order to live the worldly life he has hitherto despised. Excerpt from The War Spirit of Germany This backwardness in political thought and action constitutes one of the tragedies of the history of Germany. 'in political development Germany is where England stood in the days of Elizabeth. Un der Elizabeth, Parliament played but a small part in the life of the nation. True, it met, though sometimes only at intervals of several years, and it had control of the purse and of the making of new laws. But it voted revenues that the sovereign retained through life without further appeal to Parliament, and, since the sovereign usually thought there were already laws enough and desired little change, no new ones were passed for many years at a time. For the rest, the sovereign and the circle surrounding her controlled and spent the revenue; she named whom she would to office, kept up the army and navy, and resisted any attempt by the representatives of the nation to interfere in these things. W'ith slight differences the German Emperor does the same thing to-day. The German people have no more control over the government of Germany than the English people had over that of England in the long distant days before the struggle with Charles I to secure what Elizabeth had always refused to yield. Excerpt from German Land Hunger: And Other Underlying Causes of the War Before 1870 there was little of the spirit of militarism in Germany, outside of Prussia, nor was the Prussian people as a whole animated by this spirit. Few Germans even dreamed of military conquests or of world empire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Germany's Holy War and Other Articles Germany's bid for America's sympathy on the ground that she is conducting a holy war to protect herself and the rest of Europe from falling under Muscovite domination will not appeal to the intelligent, clear-minded American. It would be a calamity indeed for the whole world if Europe were to be ruled by the Slav, but it would likewise be a calamity should the Teuton become her master. The imminent danger to day is not the rule of the Romanoffs, but that of the Hohenzollerns. The present war is not, as the German Chancellor would have it thought, a life-and-death struggle between Germany and the Muscovite races of Russia, but obviously a life-and-death struggle between democracy and German militarism. This is why the sympathy of the majority of the American people must necessarily be with Germany's opponents. The present coalition is not directed against the German people and German civilization no more than the coalition that put an end to the power of Napoleon the First was directed against the French people and French civilization; it is directed against the rule of might represented by German militarism. It is obvious that Germany's supreme desire in the present struggle is not the warding off of Slavic rule, that is only incidental, - but the bringing of Europe under her own rule. Hence the present alignment of Powers against her. Her eagerness to crush France is not stimulated by her desire to save the latter country from Muscovite domination, but rather by her wish to increase her own power at the expense of her neighbors. Her evident intention to annex Belgium, should she be victorious, is not directed against the Slavs, but aims solely at her own aggrandizement. Excerpt from The Moral Conquest of Germany Knowledge of the German character might have prevented World War II. This is why in this moment of decision of world importance I once more try to delineate the German national - character as a warning not to try "democracy" in Germany before a period of education. It is both wrong and dangerous to accept a political distinction between Nazis and Germans, as German propaganda would have it. This book offers a case for the guilt of the German nation. I have attempted before to present the two sides of the German character: in three studies on Bismarck, the Kaiser, and Hindenburg, and in my biographies of Goethe and Beethoven. These two sides I combined in my book The Germans: Double History of a Nation. Its publication was three years ahead of public opinion in this country; in 1941 the German problem was hardly recognized as such. In England, where the upper classes had come to know the Germans well by the bombs from above and by Lord Vansittart's excellent writings from within - the book became much more popular. A bit of the material in that book has meanwhile found its way into writings of other authors, such as Creel, Nizer, Schwarzschild from whom I am now borrowing some details. I have come forward with practical suggestions on the postwar treatment of Germany in lectures and broadcasts, in articles and pamphlets, before the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives, and before the Amg at Charlottesville. Many of these ideas were widely contested at the time of their appearance, but today most of them have been accepted.
