Daarbij wordt nogal eens met weemoed verwezen naar een verleden, toen Nederland een stuk gastvrijer was voor bijvoorbeeld de helden die na 1945 het communisme ontvluchtten. In Geruisloos inwilligen beschrijft Tycho Walaardt voor de periode 1945-1994 hoe en waarom werd besloten wie mocht blijven en wie niet. Centraal staat de vraag wie er invloed hadden of wilden hebben op de uitkomsten van individuele asielverzoeken en welke argumenten zij gebruikten om voor toelating of afwijzing te pleiten. Walaardt laat zien dat er verschil bestond tussen beleid en praktijk. Een dergelijk gat wordt gewoonlijk als een probleem aangemerkt. Uit Walaardts boek blijkt, dat het gat juist ook mogelijkheden bood en dat verklaart dan ook waarom het bleef bestaan.

This book traces the reception and resettlement of Vietnamese, Cambodians and Laotians in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Israel during the 'boat people' crisis of 1975–79. These years saw hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the emergence of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and political instability across south-east Asia. Using a comparative historical approach, the authors demonstrate the multiple ways in which refugees were contested, accepted, received and resettled across different national contexts. This episode is held up today as an example of European generosity. Yet this book illustrates how the reception of boat people in Western Europe and Israel was shaped by the Cold War, and by specific national preoccupations over international prestige, immigration, labour supply and the place of foreign-born strangers in their increasingly diverse societies. While the post-2015 refugee crisis in Europe has often been construed as a new challenge requiring an unprecedented coordinated international response, this book shows the longer history of such dilemmas. Neither white, nor brown.’ This ‘Indo’ was part of the Indo-Europeans, a group of mixed indigenous and European ancestry, from the former Dutch East Indies. In almost all other Asian colonies, including British India and French Indochina, which are also covered in this study, such a group of mixed ancestry came into being. The future of these Eurasians after decolonisation was quite insecure. The European rulers, on which their status was based, were gone. The new indigenous rulers perceived them suspiciously as colonial remnants and often even as traitors. In this chaotic situation, they were forced to make a choice, between staying in the former colony or leaving for the European mother country. Did they belong in the country of their European fathers or the former colony, the country of their Asian mothers?

This collection provides an overview of some of the most relevant concepts in the study of the language of inclusion and exclusion, specifically with a view to the functioning of nation-state categories. Categorizations, words, and phrases are constantly renewed with the intention to exclude (mostly) or to include (rarely), promulgating problematizations that highlight discursive distinctions between in-groups and out-groups. Such discursive constructions and the practices through which they are effectuated are sites of symbolic power, and their study reveals the workings of power. Historical analysis of the language of inclusion and exclusion can help elucidate contemporary transformations of discursive power. The chapters in this volume discuss forms of discursive problematization such as defining, claiming, legitimizing, expanding, sensationalization and suggestion, and it connects these to the discursive drawing of boundaries, focusing on discursive constructions of ‘illegality’, race, class, gender, immigrant integration and transnationalism. As state categorizations continuously differ, both the historical analysis of their genesis, functioning and transformation, and the contemporary analysis of their practical effectuation are crucial to an understanding of inclusion and exclusion. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

Op 7 mei 2011 publiceerde het 'NRC Handelsblad' een kritisch essay van Anil Ramdas over het Nederlandse minderhedenbeleid. In dit boek, waarin de banden van Marokkaanse migranten centraal staan, beschrijft Nadia Bouras de veranderde houding van de Nederlandse overheid en de verschuivingen aan Marokkaanse zijde. Haar analyse van het Marokkaanse emigratiebeleid en levensverhalen van Marokkanen maakt duidelijke welke factoren de aard en de omvang van de banden met Marokko tussen 1960 en 2010 hebben bepaald.

Was bedeutete Migration in Europa nach 1945? Bisherige Arbeiten zur Migrationsgeschichte verbleiben entweder im nationalen Rahmen oder untersuchen transnationale Organisationen und Prozesse. Kaum finden sich Studien, die diese Ebenen kombinieren. Im vorliegenden Band werden nun Migrationsprozesse und Migrationspolitik in 13 Ländern Europas von der Nachkriegszeit bis in die Gegenwart untersucht. Dabei geht es zum einen um die Migrationsprozesse selbst, um staatliche und behördliche Regulierungsversuche und deren Auswirkungen sowie um die Reaktionen der Einwanderungsgesellschaften und die der Migranten. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Perspektive der Nationalstaaten, um Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede, Parallelen und Sonderwege zu identifizieren, Vergleiche zu ermöglichen und transnationale Prozesse zu erkennen. Vor allem zwischen den west- und osteuropäischen Ländern lassen sich dabei unterschiedliche Phasen erkennen zwischen Nachkriegs- und postkolonialer Migration, Arbeitsmigration, Binnenmigration, vor allem in der Sowjetunion, Ein- und Auswanderungsprozessen nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetimperiums und der Migration aus den Bürgerkriegsstaaten, vor allem aus Syrien und Afghanistan, nach 2010.
