Historians of modern German culture and church history refer to "the Awakening movement" (die Erweckungsbewegung) to describe a period in the history of German Protestantism between the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 and the Revolution of 1848. "The Awakening" was the last major nationwide Protestant reform and revival movement to occur in Germany. This book analyzes numerous primary sources from the era of the Awakening and synthesizes the current state of German scholarship for an English-speaking audience. It examines the Awakening as a product of the larger social changes that were re-shaping German society during the early decades of the nineteenth century. Theologically, Awakened Protestants were traditionalists. They affirmed religious doctrines that orthodox Protestants had professed since the confessional statements of the Reformation-era. Awakened Protestants rejected the changes that Enlightenment thought had introduced into Protestant theology and preaching since the mid-eighteenth century. However, Awakened Protestants were also themselves distinctly modern. Their efforts to spread their religious beliefs were successful because of the new political freedoms and economic opportunities that the Enlightenment had introduced. These social conditions gave German Protestants new means and abilities to pursue their religious goals. Awakened Protestants were leaders in the German churches and in the universities. They used their influence to found many voluntary organizations for evangelism, in Germany and abroad. They also established many institutions to ameliorate the living conditions of those in poverty. Adapting Protestantism to modern society in these ways was the most original and innovative aspect of the Awakening movement.

The book examines the nexus between political and religious thought within the Prussian old conservative milieu. It presents early-nineteenth-century Prussian conservatism as a phenomenon connected to a specific generation of young Prussians. The book introduces the ecclesial-political ‘party of the Evangelische Kirchenzeitung’ (EKZ), a religious party within the Prussian state church, as the origins of Prussia’s conservative party post-1848. It traces the roots of the EKZ party back to the experiences of the Napoleonic Wars (1806-15) and the social movements dominant at that time. Additionally, the book analyses this generation’s increasing politicization and presents the German revolution of 1848 and the foundation of Prussia’s first conservative party as the result of a decade-long struggle for a religiously-motivated ideal of church, state, and society. The overall shift from church politics to state politics is key to understanding conservative policy post-1848. Consequently, this book shows how conservatives aimed to maintain Prussia’s character as a Christian and monarchical state, while at the same time adapting to contemporary political and social circumstances. Therefore, the book is a must-read for researchers, scholars, and students of Political Science and History interested in a better understanding of the origins and the evolution of Prussian conservatism, as well as the history of political thought.

Mit „Preußen als Kulturstaat“ setzt die Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften die Neue Folge der einst von Gustav Schmoller begründeten Acta Borussica fort. Die auf mehr als zehn Bände projektierte zweite Reihe rückt dabei mit der Kulturstaatsproblematik einen zentralen, bisher von der Geschichtswissenschaft vernachlässigten Aspekt der preußischen Geschichte in den Mittelpunkt des Forschungsinteresses. In einer Kombination von mehrbändigen Auswahleditionen und thematischen Forschungsmonographien wird das Verhältnis von Staatsbildung, Kultur und Gesellschaft im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert dokumentiert und analysiert. In Vertiefung der bislang vorgelegten vier Bände zum preußischen Kultusministerium, die sich der Entwicklung dieser preußischen Zentralbehörde und seines höheren Personals sowie seinen fünf großen kulturpolitischen Wirkungsfeldern widmeten, enthält dieser Band acht Studien, in denen die Wechselwirkung von kulturstaatlichem Handeln und bürgergesellschaftlichen Engagement an exemplarischen, bislang nicht erforschten Prozessen, Ereignissen oder Konflikten aus der Kulturpolitik Preußens im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert analysiert wird. Dabei stehen sowohl ganz Preußen betreffende Entwicklungen als auch stark regional wirkende Prozesse im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung. Die Studien basieren auf Quellen aus dem Geheimen Staatsarchiv Berlin-Dahlem, dem Landeshauptarchiv Koblenz sowie dem Historischen Archiv des Erzbistums Köln. Sie vereint die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von gesellschaftlicher Nachfrage bzw. Interessenartikulation und staatlichem Verwaltungshandeln im kulturellen Bereich.
