In fünfzehn Kapiteln fragt diese Studie nach im wesentlichen literarischen und musikalischen Erscheinungsformen einer in der Romantik maßgeblich entwickelten poetischen Denkweise, die hier als eine pluralektische vorgestellt wird. Der unverwechselbare Beitrag der Romantik zur Ideengeschichte, so die Hauptthese dieser Arbeit, liegt in ihrer den dialektischen Schematismus entgrenzenden Pluralektik, die sich mit mythologischer Motivik verband, im Roman exponierte und in der poetischen Musik selbst besang.

In the broadest treatment yet of suicide in Europe during the period 1500–1800, 11 authors combine elements of social, cultural, legal, and intellectual history to trace important changes in the ways Europeans experienced and understood voluntary death. Well into the seventeenth century, Europeans viewed suicide as a terrible crime and an unforgivable sin resulting from demonic temptation. By the late eighteenth century, however, suicide was rarely subject to judicial penalties, and society tended to blame self-inflicted death on insanity rather than on the devil. From Sin to Insanity shows that early modern Europe witnessed nothing less than the birth of modern suicide: increasing in frequency, self-inflicted death became decriminalized, secularized, and medicalized, viewed as a regrettable but not shameful result of reversals in fortune or physical or mental infirmity. The ten chapters focus on suicide cases and attitudes toward self-murder from the fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries in geographical settings as diverse as Scandinavia and Hungary, France and Germany, England and Switzerland, Spain and the Netherlands.

Zumindest für rund zwanzig Millionen Menschen, die – nach Einschätzung von Fachgesellschaften – allein in Deutschland an regelmäßig auftretenden Schmerzen leiden. ... Aber auch wenn wir nicht selbst von Schmerz betroffen sind, werden wir tagtäglich mit Schmerz und Leiden konfrontiert, sei es, dass wir jemanden kennen, der unter Schmerzen leidet, oder wir werden durch Schlagzeilen in der Zeitung oder Meldungen aus dem Fernsehen, die von Krieg, Terror und Folter berichten, auf den Schmerz und das Leiden anderer aufmerksam gemacht. Obwohl wir aber täglich die Bilder der Leidenden präsentiert bekommen, können wir uns trotzdem häufig kein rechtes Bild von den Situationen machen, in denen Menschen Schmerz erleiden, und können darüber hinaus auch nicht ermessen, was es bedeutet Schmerzen zu haben. Wenig vorstellbar erscheint daher freiwillig erlittener Schmerz z.B. innerhalb von Glaubenszusammenhängen, der so genannte Schmerz der Märtyrer, deren Hingabe und Aufopferung wir mit einer Mischung aus Staunen und Entsetzen beobachten. Ebenso ratlos sind wir, wenn wir Schmerz in Verbindung mit Lust und Schönheit begegnen, meist können wir dafür erst recht kein Verständnis aufbringen. Aber zum Glück begegnen wir dem Schmerz dann doch nicht so häufig: Den Fernseher kann man abschalten, die Zeitung weglegen, Augen schließen geht sowieso immer. Und wenn wir selbst vom Schmerz gepackt werden, können wir immerhin schnell zum Tablettenröhrchen greifen und schon funktioniert wieder alles, wie es soll. Schmerz ist ohnehin kein Thema in unserer Gesellschaft. Zumindest scheint es so. Man hat ihn einfach nicht, oder eben durch Medikamente im Griff; darüber geredet wird selten. ... Da ist es erstaunlich, wenn sich ausgerechnet zwei Literaturwissenschaftler mit dem Schmerz in einer Art und Weise beschäftigen, wie es Elaine Scarry und David B.
