Western Corporations And Covert Operations In The Early Cold War written by Margaret Murányi Manchester and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-28 with Political Science categories.

This book examines the Vogeler/Sanders espionage case that ruptured ties between the US and UK and Hungary in 1949, and analyses this as an example of Western covert operations in the early Cold War. The work focuses on the 1949 case of ITT in Hungary, where two of its executives, the American Robert A. Vogeler and the Briton Edgar Sanders, were arrested by the secret police, tortured, forced to confess, put on a public show trial, and found guilty of espionage. This happened at a time that the US and the UK were cooperating in numerous operations to undermine the credibility of the communist regime and to encourage local resistance by “all means short of war.” Using the case as a lens to examine the dynamics of the early Cold War, the book integrates business history, diplomatic history and intelligence history, and thereby traces the impact of the case on Anglo-Hungarian, American-Hungarian, and Anglo-American relations during the critical period of 1949-1956. Vogeler’s case had a strong impact on the growing criticism of the Truman Administration’s containment policies and contributed to the demand for a more activist policy of ‘liberation of captive peoples’. His experiences also rallied the business community, especially trade associations such as the National Foreign Trade Council, the US Chamber of Commerce, and the National Association of Manufacturers, to support the anti-communist crusade both abroad and at home. Vogeler’s wife also waged a personal campaign to secure her husband’s release and exemplifies the activism of conservative and Catholic women who waged their own anti-communist crusade. The book thus tells the “rest of the story” often omitted in traditional works. This book will be of much interest to students of Cold War history, intelligence studies and European political history.

Face T S Of First Language Loss written by Sandra G. Kouritzin and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-04-01 with Education categories.

This book contributes to the understanding of first-language loss in both immigrant and indigenous communities in (at least) three ways. First, it provides insight into the process of language loss and the factors contributing to it. Second, it attempts to define, from an insider perspective, what it means to "lose" a language. Third, it analyzes the perceived consequences of first language loss in terms of social, academic, emotional, and economic factors--an approach previously lacking in research on language loss. Most studies of first language loss are impersonal, even when they tell emotional stories. This polyphonic book about language loss and imperfect learning of heritage languages tells the inside story. Easy to read and yet academic, it gives voice to five different storytellers who relate the histories of their first language loss and analyzes themes from 21 life-history case studies of adults who had lost their first languages while learning English. The stories in this book make a compelling argument that heritage languages should be preserved, that ESL should be about developing bilinguals not English monolinguals. Important reading for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in ESL and bilingual education, multicultural education, cultural studies, and sociology, this book will also interest qualitative researchers as an example of a unique form of both doing and writing research.

In this book, The Immigrant: From Hungary with Love, you will read the true story of a Hungarian who is a well-known artist, singer, and virtuoso violinist. This is my life as an immigrant who came to the free world through many surprises in his ninety-three years of living. My life was put in danger many times--from escaping a Russian hard labor camp as a young teenager after a two and a half years of torture and pain to finally arriving back home to my family in Hungary as a seventeen-year-old boy, with God helping me find my way home. Starting a new life was not an easy task to embrace as an escaped prisoner; I was forced to leave Hungary and my family behind. I went through many adventures and hard times to make it to America and start a better life. I believe that my hard work and perseverance paid off, and I never quit on my quest for freedom. I truly hope you enjoy my story and come away from reading it with renewed energy and hope. Life is a great teacher for everybody! You learn how to survive when the "wheel goes down," and you must work hard to push up that wheel. It happened to me many times in my life. This book is the life of an immigrant who fought for his future. Please keep the "life wheel" moving forward, up always, and never give up!
