The assessment in Rome of American Catholic Church’s potential and its problems began in the 1880s at the moment when the Holy See was looking for a way to overcome its political marginalization following the capture of Rome on September 20, 1870. In fact, the Vatican was transforming its world-wide religious network into a diplomatic one geared to sustain the international aims of a State that had lost its territory. Moreover, we should not underestimate the migration factor in the Italian Peninsula: the Italian diaspora was growing and Italian members of the Curia were worrying about the future of those who were flowing to the United States and other “Protestant” countries. At the same time, a number of the Vatican diplomats foresaw the shifting religious balance in North America as a result of the increase in Catholic migrants.

La figura degli agenti a Roma per promuovere casi presso la Sede Apostolica è apparsa finora solo in pubblicazioni relative alla prima età moderna e moderna. Grazie ad esse sappiamo che rappresentavano gli interessi di diverse entità ecclesiastiche: diocesi, capitoli cattedrali, monasteri, priorati, chierici. Inoltre rispondevano agli interessi dei loro sovrani e trasmettevano a questi, come agli ecclesiastici di cui sopra, notizie dal centro della cristianità. Alcuni risiedevano stabilmente a Roma, altri vi rimanevano fino al compimento dell’incarico assegnatogli. Armati solitamente di una buona conoscenza del diritto canonico e di una certa fluenza in latino e italiano, nonché di ottime capacità retoriche, dovevano far passare il caso affidatogli attraverso il labirinto della burocrazia papale. Come è cambiato questo ruolo nel XVIII-XX secolo? Gli agenti hanno allora continuato ad avere una funzione cruciale nei rapporti con la Curia Romana, rappresentando gli interessi di comunità e personalità ecclesiastiche e raccogliendo informazioni per queste e per il proprio Stato, oppure il loro lavoro è diventato del tutto invisibile, ripetitivo e amministrativo? Hanno continuato a risiedere nella Città eterna oppure hanno agito da e in altre città pontificie. Inoltre l’attività romana o italiana è stata solo un episodio della loro biografia oppure hanno svolto regolarmente questa funzione, trasformandola in un vero e proprio lavoro trasmesso in famiglia per più generazioni? Qualcuno di loro è riuscito a costruirsi una carriera in patria o a Roma e ha utilizzato a tal scopo la rete di relazioni forgiate come agente? The contributors to this volume examine the complex and dynamic role that Protestant majorities and minorities played in shaping the Reformations of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In doing so, it offers an important perspective on the range of intellectual, social, economic, political, theological and ecclesiological factors that governed intra- and inter-confessional encounter in the early modern period. While the principal focus is on the situation of different Protestant majority and minority groups, many of the contributions also engage the relation of Protestants and Catholics, with a number also considering early modern Christian dialogue with Muslims and Jews. The volume is organised into five sections, which together provide a comprehensive picture of Protestant majorities and minorities. The first section explores intellectual trajectories, especially those which promoted confessional unity or sought to break down confessional boundaries. The second section, taking the neglected Spanish Reformation as an important case-study, examines the clandestine aspect of minority activities and the efforts of majorities to control and suppress them. The third section pursues a similar theme but examines it through the lens of Flemish and Walloon Reformed refugee communities in Germany and the Netherlands, demonstrating the way in which confessional factors could lead to the integration or exclusion of minorities. The fourth section examines marginal or peripheral Reformations, whether geographically or doctrinally understood, focussing on attempts to implement reform in the shadow of the Ottoman Empire. Finally, the fifth section looks at confessional identity and otherness as a principal theme of majority and minority relations, providing both theoretical and practical frameworks for its evaluation.
