Excerpt from Glimpses of Old Glasgow Immediately after the issue of my Reminiscences of Printers and Printing (1830 which was printed for private circulation, I was frequently asked and urged to give further remembrances of my native City. The subject was thus kept before me; and, as leisure permitted, memories of over half a century were jotted down, together with brief sketches of Clergymen and Laymen with whom I had been associated or had come in contact. The result is now embodied in the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Views and Notices of Glasgow in Former Times Beyond the gateway in the view, may be observed the upper part of what is said to have been the Custom-house, or place where the town's dues were collected, to which we shall, in another part of the volume, have occasion to refer. Farther to the left are seen the trees whose waving foliage overshadowed the once favourite promenade of the earliest public park possessed by the inhabitants. It stood between Stockwell and Jamaica streets; and till within the last sixty or seventy years, was a very fashionable place of resort. In an opposite direction, the town is observed stretching to the eastward; the houses on the site of the present shambles and their noxious vicinity, intermingled with trees, and separated from the river by a low stone wall. Where the Molendinar joins the Clyde a little haven seems to have been formed for the reception of small boats; this, with the grass-covered banks adjoining, and the few little shallops floating in the stream, gives an air of quiet simplicity to the picture, that from a present glance at the spot it would indeed be difficult for the imagination to realize. The exhibits range in date from the earliest times until about the middle of this century. All the exhibits have a direct connection with Glasgow and its industrial, social, and civic life. The Council deeply regret that, just as the arrangements for the Exhibition were approaching completion, the sudden death of J ames Reid, Esq., has, for the meantime, left the position of President vacant. Excerpt from Sketch of the History of Glasgow Subsequent to the death of St. Mungo, the detail of whose life stands out in the bold relief of historical fact, the records of the see established by him are of the most scanty and misty kind possible. There is no doubt that the sanctity pertaining to the resting-place of the bones of so holy a man, kept the establishment together, and drew around it the village which became the nucleus of the future city. The small community is believed to have suffered from the incursion of the Danes, and possibly also from rievers, who did not come from beyond the seas. But, in reality, for the long period of 500 years, there is no authentic record regarding it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Old Glasgow Weavers: Being Records of the Incorporation of Weavers; With Eight Illustrations The matter available has not been such as to make a continuous record possible. For facility of reference it has been thought advisable to classify the extracts, necessarily somewhat arbitrarily, in Chapters, and to dispense with a detailed Index. With few exceptions the extracts have, in each chapter, been arranged chronologically. The Minute and other Books now awanting were first missed in 1849, as is shown in an acknowledgment then granted by a new clerk for other books. The writer desires to acknowledge much kindly help received especially from the Clerk, Mr. C. J. MacLean; and from Mr. Robert Renwick, Depute Town Clerk of the City. Excerpt from Popular Traditions of Glasgow: Historical, Legendary and Biographical In the following pages we have endeavoured to collate from almost every source available to us, a few of the more graphic and striking sketches of life and character from the History of Glasgow, at its different stages, partly with the view of stimulating our readers to a more systematic and consecutive study of that History, and partly with the view of exhibiting some of the essential principles and underlying forces of the city's progress and prosperity, so that our young readers especially may not become bewildered with the multitudinous and ever increasing details of our city's life and interests, but come into living contact with its heart and spirit, and thus become partakers of its inner life, and conduct their own lives in harmony with its best and noblest traditions. We make no pretence to Originality of research. The only merit we claim is that of careful selec tion and combination; and of having kept steadily in view, the elucidation of what we consider to be the leading and guid ing principles that have gone to make Glasgow what it now undoubtedly is, the Second City in the United Kingdom. Like the Popular History of Glasgow, published seven' years ago, the present work is chiefly intended for the rising generation of our citizens, and to those others who have not had the opportunity of perusing the larger and costlier works that have been written; and to these classes we trust the book will afford some pleasure and instruction.
