Excerpt from Sketch of the History of Glasgow Subsequent to the death of St. Mungo, the detail of whose life stands out in the bold relief of historical fact, the records of the see established by him are of the most scanty and misty kind possible. There is no doubt that the sanctity pertaining to the resting-place of the bones of so holy a man, kept the establishment together, and drew around it the village which became the nucleus of the future city. The small community is believed to have suffered from the incursion of the Danes, and possibly also from rievers, who did not come from beyond the seas. But, in reality, for the long period of 500 years, there is no authentic record regarding it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Progress of Glasgow: A Sketch of the Commercial and Industrial Increase of the City During the Last Century, as Shown in the Records of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, and Other Authentic Documents As the Chamber has just completed the first century of its existence, the present seems a fitting time to give these researches greater publicity, and, at the suggestion of several friends, I have embodied them in a narrative. Excerpt from Popular Traditions of Glasgow: Historical, Legendary and Biographical In the following pages we have endeavoured to collate from almost every source available to us, a few of the more graphic and striking sketches of life and character from the History of Glasgow, at its different stages, partly with the view of stimulating our readers to a more systematic and consecutive study of that History, and partly with the view of exhibiting some of the essential principles and underlying forces of the city's progress and prosperity, so that our young readers especially may not become bewildered with the multitudinous and ever increasing details of our city's life and interests, but come into living contact with its heart and spirit, and thus become partakers of its inner life, and conduct their own lives in harmony with its best and noblest traditions. We make no pretence to Originality of research. The only merit we claim is that of careful selec tion and combination; and of having kept steadily in view, the elucidation of what we consider to be the leading and guid ing principles that have gone to make Glasgow what it now undoubtedly is, the Second City in the United Kingdom. Like the Popular History of Glasgow, published seven' years ago, the present work is chiefly intended for the rising generation of our citizens, and to those others who have not had the opportunity of perusing the larger and costlier works that have been written; and to these classes we trust the book will afford some pleasure and instruction. Excerpt from Glimpses of Old Glasgow Immediately after the issue of my Reminiscences of Printers and Printing (1830 which was printed for private circulation, I was frequently asked and urged to give further remembrances of my native City. The subject was thus kept before me; and, as leisure permitted, memories of over half a century were jotted down, together with brief sketches of Clergymen and Laymen with whom I had been associated or had come in contact. The result is now embodied in the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Charters And Other Documents written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-17 with History categories.

Excerpt from Charters and Other Documents: Relating to the City of Glasgow In this volume, I have attempted to sketch as a Preface to Part II., what may be regarded as the constitutional history of Glasgow from the foundation of the Burgh in 1175 or 1178, till the end of the reign of King Charles I on 30th January, 1649. In doing so, as nearly as possible chronologically, I have drawn upon the three volumes above referred to. Prepared and printed in small instalments - frequently after lengthened intervals of time occupied in pressing public duties - this preface presents the results of occasional work in collecting such information bearing upon the history of the City as is obtainable from the Charters and Records of the Burgh, so far as these still exist, the Records of the Convention of the Royal Burghs of Scotland, the Statutes and other Public Records of Scotland, the publications of the Lord Clerk Register, those of the Historical Manuscripts Commissioners, and those of the several Scottish Historical Societies, some of which are now extinct, while others are still actively engaged in the elucidation of Scottish history. Probably, too detailed reference is made in this Preface to matters, of national rather than local history, but, in the results of these, Glasgow has largely shared, and, indeed, its own somewhat meagre records are frequently explained. By contemporary events in other parts of Scotland and also in England. It is to me equally a pleasure and a duty to express my obligation to my friend and assistant, Mr. Robert Renwick, for the assistance he has rendered in collating the proof-sheets as printed from time to time, and in largely verifying and supplementing references. For such errors as remain I alone am responsible. The first volume of the Protocols of the town-clerks of Glasgow, now being edited by him, contains a sketch plan of the City as it existed about the year 1547. To that map reference may be made, subject to the note appended to it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Rambles Round Glasgow: Descriptive, Historical, and Traditional The first edition of the present Work, although of cousi derahle extent, was exhausted within a few months of its publication. Since then there have been numerous inquiries for it; and it has consequently been deemed advisable to issue the present new, and, it is hoped, in many respects improved edition. The various Rambles have been care fully gone over; mistakes where they had crept in have been corrected; notes have been freely introduced wherever they were thought necessary; while a considerable amount of new matter has been introduced into the text. A frontis piece of Crookston Castle, and a vignette of Rutherglen Church, both fi'om original drawings, and engraved by a first-class artist, will, it is hoped, contribute, along with its other features of novelty, to render the present edition even more acceptable to the public than its predecessor.
