The Caribbean region is facing many challenges in the early years of the twenty-first century, including global warming, population growth, globalization and trade liberalization. This volume makes a significant contribution to the literature, with a range of authors from geography and other disciplines showing how current research is addressing rapid change in the region. This is the fourth volume in a series published by the University of the West Indies Press that has focused on the search for development strategies that address the social and economic needs of the people without further deterioration of the region's fragile environmental resource base. This volume focuses upon the vulnerabilities of peoples and their environments, and emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in this applied research field. Among the issues examined are climate change, sustainable food production systems, urban planning and community development, and coastal management. The editors conclude the volume by developing the critical research agenda on these and other issues. Book jacket.

Routledge Handbook Of South South Relations written by Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-18 with Business & Economics categories.

South-South cooperation is becoming ever more important to states, policy-makers and academics. Many Northern states, international agencies and NGOs are promoting South-South partnerships as a means of ‘sharing the burden’ in funding and undertaking development, assistance and protection activities, often in response to increased political and financial pressures on their own aid budgets. However, the mainstreaming of Southern-led initiatives by UN agencies and Northern states is paradoxical in many ways, especially because the development of a South-South cooperation paradigm was originally conceptualised as a necessary way to overcome the exploitative nature of North-South relations in the era of decolonisation. This handbook critically explores diverse ways of defining ‘the South’ and of conceptualising and engaging with ‘South-South relations.’ Through 30 state-of-the-art reviews of key academic and policy debates, the handbook evaluates past, present and future opportunities and challenges of South-South cooperation, and lays out research agendas for the next 5-10 years. The book covers key models of cooperation (including internationalism, Pan-Arabism and Pan-Africanism), diverse modes of South-South connection, exchange and support (including South-South aid, transnational activism, and migration), and responses to displacement, violence and conflict (including Southern-led humanitarianism, peace-building and conflict resolution). In so doing, the handbook reflects on decolonial, postcolonial and anticolonial theories and methodologies, exploring urgent questions regarding the nature and implications of conducting research in and about the global South, and of applying a ‘Southern lens’ to a wide range of encounters, processes and dynamics across the global South and global North alike. This handbook will be of great interest to scholars and post-graduate students in anthropology, area studies, cultural studies, development studies, history, geography, international relations, politics, postcolonial studies and sociology.

Climate Litigation And Vulnerabilities written by Maria Antonia Tigre and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-19 with Law categories.

This volume explores climate litigation as a means to tackle the rights and socio-ecological, intergenerational, gender, racial, and other justice implications of the ever-growing vulnerability to climate change, whilst critically engaging with the notions of vulnerability and intersectional climate justice. With insightful analysis, thought-provoking case studies, and a global perspective, the collection illustrates the opportunities and pitfalls of litigation pursued by people from the Global South who face intersecting forms of oppression and marginalisation amidst the climate crisis. Contributors discuss litigation strategy, novel legal arguments, institutional barriers, and unique socio-ecological and political challenges in the Global South. Divided into two parts, the book recognises that climate change is an existential threat to humanity more frequently being tackled in courts worldwide. The first part exposes the limits of litigation as a mechanism for intersectional climate justice for vulnerable people in the Global South. The second part highlights innovations in climate litigation in pursuit of intersectional climate justice. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers, and policymakers in the areas of human rights law, environmental law, climate law, Latin American studies, South Asian studies, and African studies.

The management of natural resources plays a vital role in the socio-economic development of all countries. However, the world’s environment, and its ecosystems and resources, are being increasingly threatened through over-exploitation, mismanagement, and pollution in the search for economically important raw materials and for sustenance. Access to these resources, and indeed, their long-term viability is threatened by a number of challenges, including climate change, geo-political factors, and growing levels of (unsustainable) consumption. The complexity of these challenges and opportunities requires holistic perspectives. Taking a sectoral, national, and global view of the issues associated with the management of natural resources and offering practical approaches to addressing them, this book will appeal to a broad range of stakeholders. The text explores key challenges and opportunities associated with the management of the world’s natural resources in a manner that facilitates their long-term sustainability. It is essential reading for anyone working in resource management, sustainability, development, and policy.
