Religion's great and powerful mystery fascinates us, but it also terrifies. So too the monsters that haunt the stories of the Judeo-Christian mythos and earlier traditions: Leviathan, Behemoth, dragons, and other beasts. In this unusual and provocative book, Timothy K. Beal writes about the monsters that lurk in our religious texts, and about how monsters and religion are deeply entwined. Horror and faith are inextricable. Ans as monsters are part of religious texts and traditions, so religion lurks in the modern horror genre, from its birth in Dante's Inferno to the contemporary spookiness of H.P. Lovecraft and the Hellraiser films. Religion and Its Monsters is essential reading for students of religion and popular culture, as well as any readers with an interest in horror.

The Bible is teeming with monsters. Giants tromp through the land of milk and honey; Leviathan swims through the wine-dark sea. A stunning array of peculiar creatures, mind-altering spirits, and supernatural hitmen fill the biblical heavens, jarring in both their strangeness and their propensity for violence--especially on God's behalf. Traditional interpretations of the creatures of the Bible have sanded down their sharp, unsavory edges, transforming them into celestial beings of glory and light--or chubby, happy cherubs. Those cherubs? They're actually hybrid guardian monsters, more closely associated with the Egyptian sphinx than with flying babies. And the seraphim? Winged serpents sent to mete out God's vengeance. Demons aren't at war with angels; they're a distinct supernatural species used by Satan and by God. The pattern is chilling. Most of these monsters aren't God's opponents--they're God's entourage. Killer angels, plague demons, manipulative spirits, creatures with an alarming number of wings (and eyes all over)--these shapeshifters and realm-crossers act with stunning brutality, each reflecting a facet of God's own monstrosity. Confronting God's monsters--and the God-monster--may be uncomfortable, but the Bible is richer for their presence. It's not only richer; the stories of the monsters of the Bible can be as fun, surprising, and interesting as any mythology. For anyone interested in monsters, myths, folklore, demons, and more, God's Monsters is an entertaining deep dive into the creaturely strangeness of the Bible.

The book you are about to read is a revised version of Monster in Mama is Not Bigger than God based on my painful experience with my mother, sibling, relatives, some members of churches and communities I lived in. Even though I suffered in some churches and under some preachers who call themselves servants of God I continue to serve God and have fellowship with brethren in a church. This book is one of those difficult ones for me to write. I delayed for a while when God instructed me to write about my own personal abuse. To tell the truth I did not think, great book to write Father, I will start right away. God showed me my rejection by my mother since she knew she was pregnant with me. She never accepted me until now when I'm writing this book. I don't write the book to make her appear like some monster but I firmly believe she has some monster inside of her to carry such hatred towards me. God gave me the title "Monster in Mama is not Bigger than God" so that I understand that my "battle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers and rulers of darkness." I battled to understand why such deep hatred from the woman who gave birth to me. I mean she looked me in the face and said "Doreen, you will never force me to love you!" My mother would say "when I gave birth to you if I knew you will rebel against me I should have sat on you and suffocate you to death. I told the Congolese in-laws of yours to kill you take the body and give me your head. You are good for nothing, a witch, a Satanist, evil, cruel, stupid, a problem to me. It is good that you lost everything including your job. It serves you right that Mampani (husband) is poverty stricken. He cannot even afford to buy himself underwear. I brought you down from being a success to live like an illiterate person. You thought you knew everything and you are clever." When I asked my mother who my real father is she would swear me with words that even those who write dictionaries would not take time to write. She did this while drunk and sober therefore she knew what she was doing. I went on fasting for over 30 days fasted and prayed asking God to reveal who my real father was. The man who rejected me for 44 years was my real father. I was told he was charmed by his late mother not to take care of his own children. He asked for me during his last days but I refused to speak to him or visit him. He caused me deep pain for four decades. I forgave him, went to his funeral and even helped with cooking and cleaning for the whole night preparing food for the mourners. Well hard as it is, I'm still praying for my mother's Salvation. I realized that when all those evil spirits that are making her the monster are out, she will realize the mistake she did. I didn't just embark on the battle but with God, LORD Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, brethren, Christian counseling and strangers that God sent to encourage me. For example one day I met one woman for the first time, she said "mama, even if someone make you angry. It does not matter how much he or she swears you and belittle you. Don't ever raise your hand to smack or push that person. There are too many sick people these days. Unfortunately some look healthy but are dying. Just walk away or else you will smack or push such a person and he or she falls down and die. When you go to court the judge will say that you have killed someone. So don't lose faith." I did not discuss my challenge with that woman neither did she read any of my books. I found out when we were talking that God was using her.

God At War written by Gregory A. Boyd and has been published by InterVarsity Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-18 with Religion categories.

In this bold and compelling work, Gregory Boyd undertakes to reframe the central issues of Christian theodicy. By Boyd's estimate, theologians still draw too heavily on Augustine's response to the problem of evil, attributing pain and suffering to the mysterious "good" purposes of God. Accordingly, modern Christians are inclined not to expect evil and so are baffled but resigned when it occurs. New Testament writers, on the other hand, were inclined to expect evil and fight against it. Modern Christians attempt to intellectually understand evil, whereas New Testament writers grappled with overcoming evil. Through a close and sophisticated reading of both Old and New Testaments, Boyd argues that Satan has been in an age-long (but not eternal) battle against God, and that this conflict "is a major dimension of the ultimate canvas against which everything within the biblical narrative, from creation to the eschaton, is to be painted and therefore understood." No less edifying than it is provocative, God at War will reward the careful attention of scholars, pastors, students and educated laypersons alike.

Egypt As A Monster In The Book Of Ezekiel written by Safwat Marzouk and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-05 with Religion categories.

Appealing to Monster Theory and the ancient Near Eastern motif of "Chaoskampf," Safwat Marzouk argues that the paradoxical character of the category of the monster is what prompts the portrayal of Egypt as a monster in the book of Ezekiel. While on the surface the monster seems to embody utter difference, underlying its otherness there is a disturbing sameness. Though the monster may be defeated and its body dismembered, it is never completely annihilated. Egypt is portrayed as a monster in the book of Ezekiel because Egypt represents the threat of religious assimilation. Although initially the monstrosity of Egypt is constructed because of the shared elements of identity between Egypt and Israel, the prophet flips this imagery of monster in order to embody Egypt as a monstrous Other. In a combat myth, YHWH defeats the monster and dismembers its body. Despite its near annihilation, Egypt, in Ezekiel's rhetoric, is not entirely obliterated. Rather, it is kept at bay, hovering at the periphery, questioning Israel's identity.
