"Roses Amidst the Thorns" is a collection of poems which traces a couple's intimate, twenty year relationship--their young, uninhibited love, their mature spiritual love, the breakdown of their love and the acceptance of the changes in their love. It is my hope by writing these poems to stimulate the reader in such a manner that they realize loving is universal. It is the most powerful force which governs the paths of our lives. At one time or another, we all move into similar phases within relationships. We experience common feelings, feelings which are not so unique to ourselves as they are to the human condition. Hopefully, we learn as a group to regard and cherish the rose (our loves) amidst the thorns (society and self-gratification) so that we may nurture our relationships seeking guidance, wisdom and strength from God, instead of watching them wither and die. ROSES AMIDST THE THORNS Our love began as a tiny bud. An introduction by a close friend, A flashed smile, a quick flirtation, Gentle touches with long conversations Lasting into the night. You were fire and ice A whirlwind wanting to change Your surroundings. I was struck by the sheer electricity Around you. As you entered a room An aura of blue light flooded your countenance. I felt caught up in the glow of your illumination. Tremendous growth occurred with you. The petals of my sheltered life Gently began to open. I blossomed into a radiant woman. Unafraid, I turned myself to your exposure. I drank in your rays and basted in the comfort Of your love. Encased within the beauty of the rose Are the sharp thorns which surface Randomly on the stem. I took each thorn as it emerged. Lifting my petals so they wouldn't tear Into my blossoms. I was contented because you wanted me. The stem was strengthened By the outpouring of love and attention You showered upon me. I grew, radiated pastel colors And opened completely. For a long time I remained In this blossomed state. Taking for granted that the warmth Of your love and the light Which beamed from you Would always be there. Blinded by my comfort, I chose not to see the changes in the seasons. Yes, my petals shivered When the cold set in. But I could visualize the glow and warmth. I paid no attention to the real climate. I mentally created my own environment. For me I was still that beautiful rose You tended and loved. By the time I realized I was withered And in danger of dying I had no strength to pull my stem up. As I tried My petals gently fell to the ground. Now instead of a beautiful rose, Was a stick with thorns Lying crushed in the dirt. But as with all God's creations He affords us the chance of rebirth And new spirit. I look forward to the Spring When all things are new. And life begins again. I WATCHED YOU CHANGE I watched you change, From the person I loved, became a part of and respected, Into someone dark, deceiving and unfeeling. Perhaps you were right. Maybe I never knew the real you. If so, I'm glad I knew The person you pretended to be. For in that person Lived kindness, strength and unshakable faith. A spiritual giant, Who inspired me to believe And reach for the stars. A gentle spirit, loving Yet firm with his children. A passionate lover, an understanding friend. Growing up in a rural well known town in the Tidewater region of Virginia, there are some things that the area is known for. The famous ports that harbor some of the most notorious ocean liners known to the US Military, great southern recipes, local colleges and universities that graduate some of the best sports champions, and some of the finest flower blossoms ever to be seen in the heart of the south. I never really paid much attention to the former, but through an amazing journey of headaches and heart breaks became quite familiar with the latter. Something that I never realized was how very crucial it was to protect a rosebud, from the elements of bitter cold that crept back in after the season for blossoming had arrived. I remember grandmamma saying youd better cover my bushes, this cold snap will destroy my buds. And now I can see the importance of protecting the very delicate plant, from elements that would damage the vital process of growth and maturation into a full blossom. What is even more important to understand is the purpose of the Rose itself to Gods creation, and what is the priority of implementing every plan necessesary for its protection. Why it is not just the flower itself but its distinctly innocent purpose for beauty and joy in the scope of its existence. How God could create something so delicate and so brilliantly and uniquely detailed for an appearance, an aroma, an authenticity never seen nor known to mere man. I will make every effort to draw assimilation from the development of a natural rose to that of a spiritual impartation in the mindset of a young puberty age person forming morals values, concepts, identities, etc.. that, will ultimately determine how they interact and exchange in covenant or consequential relationships. Are you ready to take a close look at one of the most painful, yet truthfully necessary to talk about issues in our society. From the days of Biblical families to the most recent decades of new wave cultural families. We must stop trying to cover up the ugly details of sexual perversion and taboo issues of incest and sexual abuse that occurs every day to some young person, who is in the most crucial stage of physical and spiritual development. Sexual abuse stops the process of a life that will never truly be what all it could, had the interruption in the process never occurred. When a person is sexually abused there is an interruption that occurs with their own perception of themselves and the beginning of low-self esteem and other ugly manifestations, of a victimization not asked for or warranted occurs. Thus, it is an interruption of a Rose About to Bloom. I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Psalms 139:14-15 NKJ I believe that just as the Rose when exposed to the extreme and brutal external environments, inclement temperatures and the like is damaged; also is the life of the young person affected tremendously when they are exposed to invading demonic impositions through intruders of sinful activities. Like the life of the Rose is in severe danger under these conditions, causing adverse effects on its growth and development, so it is with a young adolescent who when exposed to the cruel environment of sexual perversion, incest, pornography, is ultimately, gravely affected mentally, physically, emotionally and interpersonally. Visualize the rose pedals being peeled away bearing the naked appearance of the rose; when one is molested sexually, a slice of you is taken away until finally your raw soul is left with hurt, bitterness, and pain. Although it is hard to believe, there are so many mysteries with roses, which are true stories, reported by people worldwide. Fresh cut long stem red roses (delivered by a florist) actually stayed alive for ten (10) weeks, a historical record! This historical record, an INCREDIBLE FIND, happened to Lynda Peringian, from Dryden, MI. This was documented in the front page of the newspaper, The Eccentric,” and witnessed by so many people. Peringian happened to be an author so she wrote a book about the true story. Now readers of her book, The “MIRACLE ROSES” – A True Story, are reporting mysteries which are connected to this book. “A live red rose in the middle of the road!” said Connie Simmons “A single red rose on the floor,” reported Judi Peli. How is it possible for a nun, St. Therese, living only to the young age of 24, to touch the lives of millions of people a century after her death? Love is the answer. She was extremely full of love, not only with her family and other people, but with nature. St. Therese loved flowers, especially roses and she said, “After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses.” That she is doing, causing a sense of supernatural phenomenon, a sense of awe. St. Therese’s ability to work miracles comes from God. She is a conduit of God’s power. Can you imagine roses appearing to people and causing us all to wonder. If it happens to you, you say to yourself, “What on earth is going on?” You are wondering if this is a dream. You are not afraid, but rather pleasantly surprised, and happy with this good event... it is a blessing! St. Therese often leaves a rose as her calling card and outward sign of her presence. Although there are no traceable explanations to the fascinations of life’s mysteries, wouldn’t you agree that life would be dull without them? Surprisingly, readers of Peringian’s inspirational book have reported roses appearing to them, usually red in color. They have been fresh cut roses, but also silk roses. The floral industry (florist, gardeners, nurseries, associations, societies, and others involved with roses) have said “fresh cut long stem roses have not lived as long as Peringian’s roses.” Take note that these roses were delivered by a florist to her house which were fresh cut roses, not roses growing outside in her backyard.
