God’s Roses I saw a rose once blooming beside a garden wall. It unfolded its lovely petals and stood up straight and tall. The sun in all its glory kissed all the dew away. The breeze caught the rose in its arms and caused it to gently sway. The fragrance filled the garden; its sweetness filled the air. Its beauty could not be captured; God’s love placed it there. Summer passed, then Autumn; its leaves began to fall. The wind blew the lovely petals; some fell on the garden wall. Autumn passed, then Winter; the rose could no longer be found. The storms in all their fury had buried it beneath the ground. This rose is like the Christian; the sun shines, then departs. But God in His infinite mercy knows the strength of the human heart. Then Spring with a burst of glory invades the garden wall. And God’s children shall rise again like the rose beside the wall.

A Rumor of Roses bears witness to an honest struggle to personally forgive, love my enemies, see through some deeply entrenched and culturally justified prejudices to become an ambassador of God's extravagant love to people in places still shamed and shadowed by echoes of great evil. Growing up Jewish, unconditional love and forgiveness were not tenets my family lived by or passed onto me. Cynicism and judgment were the predominant lenses through which I was taught to view people and circumstances. And nowhere was this more evident than in the feelings the Jewish community held onto in regard to Germany. As so many of my race, culture, and generation, I grew up with a deep-seated dislike for Germany based on what happened in the Holocaust during the Second World War. But in 2006 I experienced a "holy confrontation" and the bitterness handed down by my parents' generation-seeded and rooted in my heart-was exposed. In that moment I understood the way I was brought up to think about Germany was not in accord with God's heart. Much deeper than forgiving-as impossible as that may seem to many who lost family and friends-it went right to the heart of love God desires His people to express in this world. Beginning with personal issues of forgiveness with my father and others, God revealed His mercy and grace in vulnerable corners of my history, and taught my heart how to look beyond the deep hurt and offense I instinctively held onto. In the process I changed and continued to grow in this revelation. It set the foundation for a special project, A Tour of Roses, which I began with my husband, Michael, in 2009, under the umbrella of Improbable People Ministries. Beneath the banner of healing and reconciliation we began to freely give out hundreds, and then thousands of long stem red roses to people in the streets of Dachau, Oswiecim (Auschwitz), Berlin, Munich, Warsaw, Jedwabne, Krakow, Mauthausen-to name a few. Later, we also brought A Tour of Roses to Belfast, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, and to the Sunset Strip in L.A. one Halloween night. Each rose was accompanied by a keepsake card, which spoke simply to the heart of the matter: Red for the blood of the people who died.Red for the Savior's blood which was shed for all.Red for His perfect love, which removes all fear, making it possible to love one another.I believe A Rumor of Roses is timely because of the current trends in the world-and in the church-of getting caught up in social/political issues, and ignoring the actual individual human beings involved. For instance, even though I am Jewish and there are certain politics and loyalties that people automatically assume are connected to my identity, we brought A Tour of Roses twice to Bethlehem. While there, we visited one of the more difficult Palestinian refugee camps, worshiping and handing out roses there. So much of what we heard back from those who received roses from us was their absolute surprise that we would travel all that way to just love on them. All of us on that team were amazed to see how God touched hearts through such a simple act of love and kindness. I am not a scholar or theologian, just a fellow worshiper with her own set of wounds through which God is revealing His redemptive nature. A Rumor of Roses is not a treatise on reconciliation, but observations along the way on a continuing journey further up and further into the heights and depths of those mercies that are new every morning which spring from the extravagant love of God

Growing up in a rural well known town in the Tidewater region of Virginia, there are some things that the area is known for. The famous ports that harbor some of the most notorious ocean liners known to the US Military, great southern recipes, local colleges and universities that graduate some of the best sports champions, and some of the finest flower blossoms ever to be seen in the heart of the south. I never really paid much attention to the former, but through an amazing journey of headaches and heart breaks became quite familiar with the latter. Something that I never realized was how very crucial it was to protect a rosebud, from the elements of bitter cold that crept back in after the season for blossoming had arrived. I remember grandmamma saying youd better cover my bushes, this cold snap will destroy my buds. And now I can see the importance of protecting the very delicate plant, from elements that would damage the vital process of growth and maturation into a full blossom. What is even more important to understand is the purpose of the Rose itself to Gods creation, and what is the priority of implementing every plan necessesary for its protection. Why it is not just the flower itself but its distinctly innocent purpose for beauty and joy in the scope of its existence. How God could create something so delicate and so brilliantly and uniquely detailed for an appearance, an aroma, an authenticity never seen nor known to mere man. I will make every effort to draw assimilation from the development of a natural rose to that of a spiritual impartation in the mindset of a young puberty age person forming morals values, concepts, identities, etc.. that, will ultimately determine how they interact and exchange in covenant or consequential relationships. Are you ready to take a close look at one of the most painful, yet truthfully necessary to talk about issues in our society. From the days of Biblical families to the most recent decades of new wave cultural families. We must stop trying to cover up the ugly details of sexual perversion and taboo issues of incest and sexual abuse that occurs every day to some young person, who is in the most crucial stage of physical and spiritual development. Sexual abuse stops the process of a life that will never truly be what all it could, had the interruption in the process never occurred. When a person is sexually abused there is an interruption that occurs with their own perception of themselves and the beginning of low-self esteem and other ugly manifestations, of a victimization not asked for or warranted occurs. Thus, it is an interruption of a Rose About to Bloom. I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Psalms 139:14-15 NKJ I believe that just as the Rose when exposed to the extreme and brutal external environments, inclement temperatures and the like is damaged; also is the life of the young person affected tremendously when they are exposed to invading demonic impositions through intruders of sinful activities. Like the life of the Rose is in severe danger under these conditions, causing adverse effects on its growth and development, so it is with a young adolescent who when exposed to the cruel environment of sexual perversion, incest, pornography, is ultimately, gravely affected mentally, physically, emotionally and interpersonally. Visualize the rose pedals being peeled away bearing the naked appearance of the rose; when one is molested sexually, a slice of you is taken away until finally your raw soul is left with hurt, bitterness, and pain. Many are left with trust issues which cause continuous hemorr
