Excerpt from Good English in Good Form When the newspapers so frequently amuse their read ers by exposing the ridiculous compositions of our high school pupils, and when there is abundant evidence that many professors of English in our colleges can not do much better for their students, one is reminded of the homely adage, If you would have anything done right, do it yourself. The student who has listened to learned lectures on the age and in uence of Chaucer, or has been required to produce a thesis on the Lake poets, with out being taught the fundamental principles in the use of his native tongue, may well say, Give me the means of teaching myself. I know of no volume that will answer his requirement so completely and satisfactorily as this. Here he is so far instructed in the proper use of words and phrases, with caution as to those that should be avoided, that after closing the book he will delightedly continue the study in his leisure moments. Here, also, he is taught how to use books of reference. Comparatively few read ers have the knack of readily uncovering the riches of information that are embodied in such books. But who sets out to write Narration or Exposition at the age of fifteen, unless commanded! It is stories we write, or letters, or essays on this or that. And in such a fashion is this book arranged. Letters come first in each chapter, because it is usually in the writing of a letter that the need for good expression is first brought home to the youth. A letter is something that needs to be done, not an exercise merely for practice under command. He feels his deficiencies more sharply then; sees most clearly what full expression may demand of him. Indeed, it is one task to teach sentence structure or para graph development for its own sake; it is another, and a far easier one, to teach them to pupils who have wrestled with business letters or explanations, and failed in clearness because these useful tools of composition were not adequately controlled. And finally, we have not been so oblivious of psychology as to forget that in every process of writing and speaking, preparation comes first and expression afterward. Some times it is not possible, or practicable, to separate them in teaching; but, whenever expedient, the lessons that follow are constructed with a View to the natural progression from a kindling mind to the written or spoken word. Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. These exercises may be used for various purposes. The student may write them out and bring them to class simply as exercises in penmanship, or he may memorize them and in class recite or write them out. They may also be used as dictation exercises. In the French schools a great deal is made of dictation; not only because it trains in penmanship, spelling, and punctuation, but also because it helps to develop a close and keen attention on the part of the student.
