Italiano y español son dos lenguas tan similares por su común origen y por las mutuas relaciones históricas y culturales a lo largo de los siglos, que determina que las interferencias de todo tipo –fonológicas, morfológicas, sintácticas y léxicas– entre una y otra sean constantes. Interferencias que se producen no solo en la fase de aprendizaje sino en la de su posterior uso. Por esta razón en la presente Gramática la lengua italiana se expone desde la perspectiva del hablante español que desea estudiarla profundizando en su conocimiento. Perspectiva que es contrastiva entre ambas lenguas y que determina sus peculiaridades esenciales: 1.a La lengua italiana es presentada desde el punto de vista de su aprendizaje y de su uso por un hispanohablante. Pero no se trata de un método de enseñanza de la lengua italiana, en el que cada argumento gramatical va seguido por ejercicios que pongan en práctica los diferentes aspectos estudiados. Es una gramática descriptiva y comparativa. 2.a Es una Gramática de análisis de la lengua y de carácter consultivo, tanto para hispanohablantes como para italianos, que tengan interés en conocer aquellos aspectos gramaticales o lingüísticos que son comunes o divergentes entre su lengua materna y el español. En cada argumento gramatical, una vez explicadas las formas italianas, se hace una breve referencia a las correspondientes españolas para destacar las semejanzas y las diferencias entre ambas lenguas. Por esta razón va destinada a personas que ya poseen un conocimiento básico de la lengua italiana, a lingüistas y a filólogos en general.

The volume provides the first systematic comparative approach to the history of forms of address in Portuguese and Spanish, in their European and American varieties. Both languages share a common history—e.g., the personal union of Philipp II of Spain and Philipp I of Portugal; the parallel colonization of the Americas by Portugal and Spain; the long-term transformation from a feudal to a democratic system—in which crucial moments in the diachrony of address took place. To give one example, empirical data show that the puzzling late spread of Sp. usted ‘you (formal, polite)’ and Pt. você ‘you’ across America can be explained for both languages by the role of the political and military colonial administration. To explore these new insights, the volume relies on an innovative methodology, as it links traditional downstream diachrony with upstream diachronic reconstruction based on synchronic variation. Including theoretical reflections as well as fine-grained empirical studies, it brings together the most relevant authors in the field.
