Do you feel that your writing lets you down? Do you have problems turning your thoughts into writing? Do you randomly scatter commas throughout your written work and hope for the best? You are not alone - and this book is just what you need! This is a grammar book with a difference. It brings grammar to life by giving examples of grammatical problems in the contexts where they arise by including a soap opera. As the characters’ grammar improves, so will yours. It blends a story about three students – Barbara, Kim and Abel - with advice on specific areas of grammar. The characters’ story builds throughout the book, but each chapter can be read separately if readers want to focus on specific grammatical issues. The book examines and clearly explains aspects of grammar, language use and punctuation such as: Academic language Standard English Correct use of tenses Active and passive voices Sentence construction and punctuation When and where to place an apostrophe Using grammar checkers There are exercises to encourage the reader to relate the issues to their own practice and experiences, as well as an extensive glossary which defines the terms that are used throughout the book. Grammar: A Friendly Approachis based around issues at university but students from schools and colleges will also love this irreverent look at the rules of grammar: Their teachers and tutors will also see rapid and noticeable improvements in students’ written work.

This volume explores how grammatical categories, as defined by theoretical linguistics, are effectively implemented in language education. Aiming to bridge the gap between linguistic research and language pedagogy, it offers a detailed inquiry that spans theoretical frameworks and empirical data. By presenting a series of insightful studies, this work illustrates how findings from theoretical linguistics can be applied to enhance practical language instruction, demonstrating the reciprocal enrichment of both fields. Essential for linguists, language educators, and researchers interested in the intersections of grammar, cognition, and pedagogy, the volume is organized into four engaging sections. Each section illuminates the nuances of grammar teaching and language acquisition. It begins with a theoretical analysis of linguistic categories across diverse languages, progresses through the links between linguistic research and teaching methodologies, and delves into the role of empirical data in classroom applications. The final section focuses on the practical implementation of linguistic categories in language teaching, promoting a deeper understanding of grammar as a dynamic component of language learning.

This book investigates the content of the grammar syllabus typically employed in mainstream English Language Teaching. Using a mixed-methods approach, the author examines how the syllabuses used in coursebooks are actually constructed, how they evolved and how valid their contents are as a basis for teaching. The research reported consists of a broad exploration of primary sources in order to outline the evolution of ELT pedagogical grammar; ten interviews with key ELT authors and publishing professionals, which allows for the investigation of the decision-making processes underlying the choice of grammar content in ELT teaching materials; and finally, the presentation of case studies which examine three areas of grammar, analysing the evolution of their treatment in ELT materials (both historical and contemporary) and comparing their current treatment to data on real learner use. This book contributes to the literature on syllabus design and pedagogical grammar and builds on existing research into materials design. It will be of interest to researchers and professionals working in the fields of applied linguistics, pedagogical grammar, curriculum design and materials design.

Cognitive Explorations Into The Category Schema Of For written by Katarzyna Rudkiewicz and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-14 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Disparities exist in the way current linguistic research approaches prepositions, both in terms of definition and classification. Despite an abundance of publications containing analyses of prepositions, especially those in the English language, relatively little attention has been devoted to the preposition ‘for’, despite its high frequency of occurrence in English. Carried out from a cognitive perspective, and with the aid of Langacker’s cognitive grammar methodology, this text provides evidence in support of the thesis that ‘for’ constitutes a category by itself, characterised by a complex semantic structure that comprises a variety of schemas sanctioning the uses of ‘for’ in the English language. As such, this book will primarily interest students and teachers that have an interest in cognitive linguistics.
