Artist, educator, curator, and critic Luis Camnitzer has been writing about contemporary art ever since he left his native Uruguay in 1964 for a fellowship in New York City. As a transplant from the "periphery" to the "center," Camnitzer has had to confront fundamental questions about making art in the Americas, asking himself and others: What is "Latin American art"? How does it relate (if it does) to art created in the centers of New York and Europe? What is the role of the artist in exile? Writing about issues of such personal, cultural, and indeed political import has long been an integral part of Camnitzer's artistic project, a way of developing an idiosyncratic art history in which to work out his own place in the picture. This volume gathers Camnitzer's most thought-provoking essays—"texts written to make something happen," in the words of volume editor Rachel Weiss. American territorial borders have undergone significant and unparalleled changes in the last decade. They serve as a powerful and emotionally charged locus for American national identity that correlates with the historical idea of the frontier. But the concept of the frontier, so central to American identity throughout modern history, has all but disappeared in contemporary representation while the border has served to uncomfortably fill the void left in the spatial imagination of American culture. This edited volume contains refereed and improved versions of select papers 1 that were presented at the third IAPR Workshop on Graphics Recognition (GREC’99), held at Rambagh Palace in Jaipur, India, 26–27, September 1999. The workshop was organized by the TC10 (Technical Committee on Graphics Recognition) of the IAPR. Edited volumes from the previous two workshops in this series are also available as Lecture Notes in Computer Science (volumes 1072 and 1389). Graphics recognition is the study of techniques for computer interpretation of images of line drawings and symbols. This includes methods such as vectori- tion, symbol recognition, and table and chart recognition for applications such as engineering drawings, schematics, logic drawings, maps, diagrams, and musical scores. Some recently developed techniques include graphics-based information or drawing retrieval and recognition of online graphical strokes. With the recent advances in the ?eld, there is now a need to develop benchmarks for evaluating and comparing algorithms and systems. Graphics recognition is a growing ?eld of interest in the broader document image recognition community. The GREC’99 workshop was attended by ?fty-?ve people from ?fteen co- tries. The workshop program consisted of six technical sessions. Each session began with a half-hour invited talk which was followed by several short talks. Each session closed with a half-hour panel discussion where the authors ?elded questions from the other participants. Several interesting new research directions were discussed at the workshop.

Reading between the Borderlines grapples with these questions and others surrounding the production and consumption of literary, cinematic, musical, visual, and print culture across the Canada-US border. Discussing a range of popular as well as highbrow cultural forms, this collection investigates patterns of cross-border cultural exchange that become visible within a variety of genres, regardless of their place in any arbitrarily devised cultural hierarchy. This open access book is about exploring interesting borderline cases of art. It discusses the cases of gustatory and olfactory artworks (focusing on food), proprioceptive artworks (dance, martial arts, and rock climbing qua proprioceptive experiences), intellectual artworks (philosophical and scientific theories), as well as the vague limits between painting and photography. The book focuses on the author's research about what counts as art and what does not, as well as on the nature of these limits. Overall, the author defends a very inclusive view, 'extending' the limits of art, and he argues for its virtues. Some of the limits discussed concern our senses (our different perceptual modalities), some concern vagueness and fuzzy boundaries between different types of works of art, some concern the amount of human intention and intervention in the process of creation of an artwork, and some concern the border between art and science. In these various ways, by understanding better such borderline cases, Benovsky suggests that we get a better grip on an understanding of the nature of art.--
