Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Early Child Development From Measurement To Action written by Mary E. Young and has been published by World Bank Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Psychology categories.

Prosperity in the world today depends on societies' nurturing of young children. Quality care (stimulation, health, and nutrition) during ages 0 - 5 has a decisive and long-lasting impact on a person's development, ability to learn, and capacity to regulate emotions. Cognitive and noncognitive (social and emotional) skills, set early in life, determine later success. New research in neurobiology and the behavioral and social sciences is converging to enhance this understanding of early child development. Recently, researchers noted epigenetic effects in brain development - that is, the interaction of environment (early experiences) with genetics to shape brain structure and function - that with proper nurturing would enable people to have competence to create prosperous, sustainable, tolerant, nonviolent, and democratic communities. The World Bank recently hosted a symposium on the priority of early child development for economic growth and equity. The participants urged application of population - based tools and measures to assess the outcomes of children's early years and children's readiness for school. This approach, which shifts the focus from measures of disease, dysfunction, and mortality, is already yielding essential data for designing intervention programs, identifying children at risk, and leveraging policy and investment - to improve the possibilities for all children globally.

There is a set of Principles that characterizes the pattern and process of growth and development. These principles or characteristics describe typical development as a predictable and orderly process; that is, we can predict how most children will develop and that they will develop at the same rate and at about the same time as other children. Although there are individual differences in children s personalities, activity levels, and timing of developmental milestones, such as ages and stages, the principles and characteristics of development are universal patterns. This book explores the principles of physical, mental and emotional growth and development in children and teenagers. It provides information on the activities and achievements usually displayed at the given stage of development and also direct readers to information on how to help children and adolescents reach their full potential as they grow and develop. To students considering employment in teaching, nursing, psychology, day-care centers, etc., this book is destined to become a valuable reference tool.

Despite the wide array of theoretical frameworks and research in the discipline of child development, there is a dearth of guidance to implement that knowledge in real world settings. This book nicely bridges the gap between theory and practice and successfully presents the integration of psychology, sociology, and public health of early childhood development in the much needed cross cultural context of the developing countries. The book takes this interdisciplinary approach a step further, and provides a detailed account to conceptualise and implement community based programmes to achieve optimal early childhood development. The text is developed on the belief that organised effort to ensure a better future for our children requires a basic understanding of principles of their growth and development, and skills to scientifically observe them.

Developmental Domains in Early Childhood: New Approaches for Studying Child Growth and Development provides students with a comprehensive collection of significant research on human development. The text is organized into five distinct sections. The first section introduces students to essential developmental theories and presents a general overview of significant domains of child development such as the cognitive, physical, social, emotional, language-related, and speech-related domains. The second section provides readers with multiple perspectives on cognitive development, including Piaget's cognitive development theory, Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, and information processing theory. The third section emphasizes the importance of physical development throughout a child's life. Dedicated articles address fine and gross motor skills, the strengthening of bones and muscles, and the ability to move and touch from birth through early childhood. In the fourth section, social and emotional development is discussed. Students are introduced to various social-emotional theories through which children obtain the capacity to recognize, express, experience, and manage their emotions. The final section discusses language development in early childhood. Created to provide future child educators with vital information and insight, Developmental Domains in Early Childhood is ideal for courses and programs in human development, child development, and education.

More children born today will survive to adulthood than at any time in history. It is now time to emphasize health and development in middle childhood and adolescence--developmental phases that are critical to health in adulthood and the next generation. Child and Adolescent Health and Development explores the benefits that accrue from sustained and targeted interventions across the first two decades of life. The volume outlines the investment case for effective, costed, and scalable interventions for low-resource settings, emphasizing the cross-sectoral role of education. This evidence base can guide policy makers in prioritizing actions to promote survival, health, cognition, and physical growth throughout childhood and adolescence.

"The authors have written specifically to provide the student of child development with a sound knowledge-base of current theory and research in the field of early growth, development, and learning and its translation into practice in the daily lives of very young children. Time-honored theories of child development are discussed and applied to current knowledge about how children develop and learn. Contemporary theories, such as Cognitive (Core Systems and Neoconstructivism) and Contextual theories (Dynamic Systems and Relationship-Based Theories) are added to this edition to further aid pre-educators with a deeper understanding of the early childhood years, birth through eight. The authors apply theories and the supporting research based on these theories to Early Childhood Education practices in the classroom and with families."--Publisher.
