Las constantes amenazas que sufren los cetáceos en su ambiente natural han ocasionado que muchas especies se encuentren en peligro. El estudio de cetáceos en Guatemala tiene una historia muy reciente y se han desarrollado muy pocas investigaciones. Dos factores que ha incrementado el interés y la preocupación por el desarrollo de programas de manejo y conservación en el país. El proyecto se realizó con la finalidad de generar información que contribuya al conocimiento científico de los cetáceos en Guatemala. Tenía como objetivos (1) identificar las especies más comunes del área, (2) analizar la presencia espacial y temporal, así como las variaciones en el tamaño de grupo de las diferentes especies en el área. Se realizaron 11 navegaciones en el área costera y oceánica del Pacífico Este de Guatemala, entre febrero 2009 y febrero 2010. A lo largo de los 3412 km recorridos y las 263 horas de observación efectiva, se realizaron un total de 164 avistamientos de ocho especies (delfín nariz de botella Tursiops truncatus, delfín manchado pantropical Stenella attenuata, delphin tornillo Stenella longirostris, delfín común Delphinus delphis, delfín de Risso Grampus griseus, delfín de dientes rugosos Steneno bredanensis, ballena jorobada Megaptera novaeangliae y ballena de Bryde or rorcual tropical Balaenoptera edeni). Aunque la mayoría de avistamientos se observaron en las proximidades del Cañón de San José, se tuvo registros en toda el área de estudio. El delfín nariz de botella, fue la especie más frecuente (57%) y con el mayor rango de distribución, aunque se caracterizó por preseantarse en grupos relativamente pequeños (n: 20.7 ± 46.64). El delfín manchado, la segunda especie más frecuente (13%), fue encontrado durante todo el año principalmente en áreas costeras y de baja profundidad, claramente separada de la distribución del delfín común y el delfín tornillo, los cuales se observaron en áreas de mayores profundidades y con una topografía más compleja. La ballena de Bryde, una de las ballenas menos conocidas a nivel mundial, fue la más común en el área durante todo el año. La ballena jorobada se observó en aguas poco profundas (<200m) sobre la plataforma continental, pero principalmente durante la época migratoria. El tamaño de grupo fue muy variable entre especies, con rangos de 1 a 1000 individuos en los delfines y de 1 a 4 individuos para las ballenas. Los mayores tamaños de grupo se observaron en el delfín tornillo (n: 445.3 ± 304.94) y el delfín común (n: 162.5 ± 115.9) cerca del Cañón de San José. Las variaciones en la distribución espacial de las principales especies, sugieren una partición de hábitat en el área, probablemente relacionada a la partición de recursos y diferentes patrones en el comportamiento como el tamaño de grupo. El estudio sugiere que el Cañón de San José podría constituir un área potencial de conservación para estas especies en Guatemala. Cetaceans face constant threats in their natural environment, which has caused many species to become endangered. The study of cetaceans in Guatemala is very recent and little research has been conducted two factors that have both increased interest in and a concern to development management and conservation programs in the country. The project was conducted to generate information that contributes to scientific knowledge of cetaceans in Guatemala. The main objectives were (1) identification of the most frequent species in the area and (2) analyze temporal and spatial distribution, including variation in group size within species. From February 2009 to February 2010, 11 monthly boat-base surveys were conducted at inshore and offshore areas of the Eastern Pacific of Guatemala. During 3412 km and 263 hours of searching effort, 164 sightings and eight species (bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus, pantropical spotted dolphin Stenella attenuata, spinner dolphin Stenella longirostris, common dolphin Delphinus delphis, Risso’s dolphin Grampus griseus, rough-toothed dolphin Steno bredanensis, humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae and Bryde’s whale Balaenoptera edeni) were recorded. Species were sighted in the entire study area, but mostly near San José canyon. The bottlenose dolphin was the most frequently recorded (57%) and exhibited the widest distributional range but occurred in small group sizes (n: 20.7 ± 46.64). Spotted dolphins, the second most frequent species (13%), were sighted all year and primarily in coastal and shallow areas, clearly separated from the distribution of common and spinner dolphins that were sighted only in deep areas and with complex topography. Bryde’s whale, one of the lesser known whales in the world, was the most common whale in the area throughout the year. Humpback whale occurred on the continental shelf (< 200 m), but only during the migratory season. Group size differed among species and ranged from 1 to 1000 animals in dolphins and 1 to 4 in whales. The largest group sizes were recorded from spinner dolphin (n: 445.3 ± 304.94) and common dolphin (n: 162.5 ± 115.9) near the San José canyon. Spatial distribution of the primary species within the study area suggest habitat partitioning, probably related to resource partitioning and different behavioral patterns, such as group size. The study suggests that San José canyon may constitute a potential conservation area for these species in Guatemala.

El estudio de cetáceos a nivel local tiene una historia muy reciente en Guatemala. Su ecología y estado de conservación es poco conocida y se han realizado muy pocos esfuerzos para comprender su distribución y comportamiento. Se efectuaron diez navegaciones en el área costera y oceánica del Pacífico central de Guatemala durante la época seca (noviembre–abril) y lluviosa (mayo–octubre) del año 2011, con el fin de analizar la distribución espacio-temporal, el tamaño de grupo y comportamiento de los cetáceos. Durante las 387 horas de observación y 5162 km recorridos en esfuerzo activo, se registraron 196 avistamientos de 11 especies. La frecuencia de avistamiento obtenida fue de 3.8 avistamientos por cada 100 km recorridos y 0.51 avistamientos por hora. Los cetáceos se distribuyeron en toda el área de estudio, pero con una mayor densidad cerca del talud continental. La mayoría de especies mostraron preferencia por un hábitat determinado. Tursiops truncatus fue la especies más frecuente (48.5%) y presentó el rango de distribución más amplio. Stenella attenuata (14.8%) se encontró en áreas cercanas a la costa y mostró los movimientos estacionales de pequeña escala más significativos. Stenella longirostris (7.6%) se observó en el área del talud continental cuya topografía es más compleja. Grampus griseus (7.6%) y Delphinus delphis (2.6%) se observaron principalmente entre las 2000-5000 m isobatas. Los dos zifios no identificados y Feresa attenuata fueron más frecuentes en áreas profundas (>4000 m). Megaptera novaeangliae fue registrada únicamente durante la época seca sobre la plataforma continental al igual que Orcinus orca. El tamaño promedio de grupo fue de 49.4 (DE=144) para delfines y zifios y 1.6 (DE=0.8) para ballenas. El tamaño de grupo varió según la especie, siendo S. longirostris (381±331) y D. delphis (121±103) las que presentaron los grupos de mayor tamaño. Entre todos los avistamientos, la interacción social fue la actividad más frecuente, seguida del desplazamiento, descanso y alimentación. Los grupos más grandes fueron observados con más frecuencia en forrajeo. Se registraron crías en siete especies, de T. truncatus, S. attenuata y D. delphis principalmente en la época lluviosa y durante la época seca de S. longirostris y M. novaeangliae. La foto-ID de aletas dorsales permitió la identificación de 24 delfines y cuatro ballenas. Se recapturaron dos S. longirostris en la misma área en diferentes oportunidades, sugiriendo fidelidad de sitio. Se identificó un grupo de cuatro O. orca que habían sido fotografiado once años atrás en Cabo Corriente, México. The study of Guatemala’s local cetaceans only began recently. Their ecology and conservation status remain poorly understood and few efforts have been made to understand their distribution and behavior. Ten boat-based surveys were conducted in the inshore and offshore areas of the central Pacific coast of Guatemala during the dry (November-April) and rainy season (May- October) of 2011 to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution, group size and behavior of cetaceans. During 387 hours and 5162 km of search effort, 196 sightings of 11 species were recorded. The sighting frequency reported was 3.8 sightings per 100 km and 0.51 sightings per hour. Cetaceans were distributed over the entire area but a higher density was encountered on the continental slope. Most species displayed preferences for specific habitats. Tursiops truncatus was the most frequently encountered species (48.5%) with the widest distributional range. Stenella attenuata (14.8%) inhabited mostly inshore waters and showed the most significant small-scale seasonal movements. Stenella longirostris (7.6%) was sighted on the continental slope in areas with a complex topography. Grampus griseus (7.6%) and Delphinus delphis (2.6%) occurred where the water depth was between 2000-5000 m. The two unidentified Ziphiidae and Feresa attenuata were more frequent in deeper waters (>4000 m). Megaptera novaeangliae was recorded only during dry season on the continental shelf, as was Orcinus orca. The average group size was 49.4 (SD=144) for dolphins and beaked whales and 1.6 (SD= 0.8) for whales. Group size differed among species from 1-1200. S. longirostris (381±331) and D. delphis (121±103) showed the greatest group size. Overall, social interaction was the most frequent activity, followed by traveling, resting and feeding. Larger groups were more often observed foraging. The presence of calves was recorded for seven species, primary during rainy season for T. truncatus, S. attenuata and D. delphis and during dry season for S. longirostris and M. novaeangliae. Dorsal fin photographs led to the identification of 24 dolphins and four whales. Two S. longirostris were recaptured in the area suggesting site fidelity. A group of four O. orcas that eleven years earlier had been photographed in Cabo Corriente, Mexico were also recaptured.
