Sui primi rilievi collinari degli Appennini emiliani, nel comune di Quattro Castella (RE), su di una piccola altura, immersa in un bosco di querce, si trovano i resti di Monte Lucio. Di questo sito fortificato poco si conosceva. La sua storia era solo in minima parte nota, nascosta all’ombra dei più imponenti castra limitrofi di Monte Zane e Bianello. Oggi fortunatamente non è più così. Le indagini archeologiche hanno messo in luce un castello di nuova fondazione, eretto nel Duecento su di un poggio, fino ad allora, non abitato. Risalgono al primo impianto la torre, la cinta muraria e un piccolo oratorio dedicato a San Leonardo. La piccola chiesa alla metà del Trecento assunse funzioni cimiteriali del tutto particolari: all’interno furono deposti bambini e donne, all’esterno solo uomini adulti, la probabile guarnigione militare. Quanto emerso rende Monte Lucio un caso del tutto particolare, ricostruito attraverso l’analiticità dell’archeologia (che passa per lo scavo stratigrafico, l’archeologia dell’architettura, l’analisi dei reperti ceramici fino allo studio delle sezioni sottili, ed altro ancora) integrata con una analisi a tappeto delle fonti scritte disponibili e la contestualizzazione più ampia del dato su scala territoriale. In tal modo si è aggiunto un importante tassello per la miglior comprensione del così detto “secondo incastellamento”, un tema finora ai margini dell’archeologia medievale italiana, ma che trova in questo volume un caso di studio di grande rilevanza.
