Aerospace vehicles are by their very nature a crucial environment for safety-critical systems. By virtue of an effective safety control system, the aerospace vehicle can maintain high performance despite the risk of component malfunction and multiple disturbances, thereby enhancing aircraft safety and the probability of success for a mission. Autonomous Safety Control of Flight Vehicles presents a systematic methodology for improving the safety of aerospace vehicles in the face of the following occurrences: a loss of control effectiveness of actuators and control surface impairments; the disturbance of observer-based control against multiple disturbances; actuator faults and model uncertainties in hypersonic gliding vehicles; and faults arising from actuator faults and sensor faults. Several fundamental issues related to safety are explicitly analyzed according to aerospace engineering system characteristics; while focusing on these safety issues, the safety control design problems of aircraft are studied and elaborated on in detail using systematic design methods. The research results illustrate the superiority of the safety control approaches put forward. The expected reader group for this book includes undergraduate and graduate students but also industry practitioners and researchers. There have been much technological advances and research in Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) as a support and delivery platform for Autonomous/Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (AUV/UUV). Advantages include extending underwater search and survey operations time and reach, improving underwater positioning and mission awareness, in addition to minimizing the costs and risks associated with similar manned vessel operations. The objective of this thesis is to present the design and development a high-level fuzzy logic guidance controller for a WAM-V 14 USV in order to autonomously launch and recover a REMUS 100 AUV. The approach to meeting this objective is to develop ability for the USV to intercept and rendezvous with an AUV that is in transit in order to maximize the probability of a final mobile docking maneuver. Specifically, a fuzzy logic Rendezvous Docking controller has been developed that generates Waypoint-Heading goals for the USV to minimize the cross-track errors between the USV and AUV. A subsequent fuzzy logic Waypoint-Heading controller has been developed to provide the desired heading and speed commands to the low-level controller given the Waypoint-Heading goals. High-level mission control has been extensively simulated using Matlab and partially characterized in real-time during testing. Detailed simulation, experimental results and findings will be reported in this paper.

Unmanned marine vehicles (UMVs) is a collective term which can be used to describe autonomous underwater vehicles, remotely operated vehicles, semisubmersibles, and unmanned surface craft. These days there is considerable interest being shown in UMVs by the military, civilian and scientific communities for undertaking designated missions whilst either operating autonomously and/or in cooperation with other types of vehicle. More and more worldwide importance is also being placed on the design and development of such vehicles as they are capable of providing cost effective solutions to a number of littoral, coastal and offshore problems. This new book on the subject will cover topics including Navigation guidance and control of the following unmanned marine vehicles: remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), ncluding gliders, autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs).

This edited volume includes thoroughly collected on sensing and control for autonomous vehicles. Guidance, navigation and motion control systems for autonomous vehicles are increasingly important in land-based, marine and aerial operations. Autonomous underwater vehicles may be used for pipeline inspection, light intervention work, underwater survey and collection of oceanographic/biological data. Autonomous unmanned aerial systems can be used in a large number of applications such as inspection, monitoring, data collection, surveillance, etc. At present, vehicles operate with limited autonomy and a minimum of intelligence. There is a growing interest for cooperative and coordinated multi-vehicle systems, real-time re-planning, robust autonomous navigation systems and robust autonomous control of vehicles. Unmanned vehicles with high levels of autonomy may be used for safe and efficient collection of environmental data, for assimilation of climate and environmental models and to complement global satellite systems. The target audience primarily comprises research experts in the field of control theory, but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.

Even though the marine vessel control problem isn't recent, most common solutions are based on simplified, linear models that neglect dynamic interactions between the vehicle and its surrounding environment, which might be of relevance when working under harsh conditions. For such scenarios, it's necessary to consider their impact when designing a guidance and navigation controller, taking into account the high non-linear and coupled nature of hydrodynamic forces acting on the vehicle to control. In this document, a non-linear dynamic position controller for an underactuated unmanned surface vehicle (USV) is proposed, by making use of two different non-linear control techniques: input-output decoupling and disturbance decoupling control.

The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is currently involved in a long-term project to investigate and develop real-time control software, artificial intelligence, computer architecture and control systems theory as they pertain to U.S. Navy autonomous vehicle programs. In support of this goal, the NPS is currently designing and fabricating a testbed autonomous underwater vehicle. This work describes the design, development, and testing of a Guidance Subsystem for this testbed vehicle which uses portions of cubic spirals as the desired path to follow between waypoints. In addition, data translation firmware and real-time software for the control surfaces and main motors is designed, implemented and tested. The process of selecting and implementing an appropriate computer architecture in support of these goals is also discussed and detailed, along with the choice of associated computer hardware and real-time operating system software.
