Bjarne Melgaard (born 1967) is an Australian born, Norwegian artist based in New York. Melgaard was born in Sydney by Norwegian parents, raised in Oslo, Norway, and works and lives in New York. In this fantasy novella of gore, sex, death and dismemberment, the pages reproduce the artist's handwriting on stationery from the St. Regis Hotel in Punta Mita, Mexico, and tell the tale of a gay couple, Bjarne and Omar, who stay at a fancy American-style hotel and go into the local town to buy a kilo of cocaine, which they plan to charge on their credit cards. Their shared fantasy is to appear on the cover of Alarma!, and so they seek out a Mexican drug dealer who will dismember them, decapitate them, disembowel them, and make sure they are gory enough to warrant inclusion in the death magazine, ALARMA.

This book accompanies the summer 2010 exhibition by Sydney born, Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard at de Appel art centre, Amsterdam. Amongst Melgaard's fascinations are provocative and violent subcultures, deceit, and fictional narratives and personas. Neither an alter-ego nor avatar, Rod Bianco is Melgaard's latest fictional projection.'Super normal' is a confrontational celebration of Bianco's life, travels, outpourings and memories, collated and presented by Melgaard and other artists. Photography, diaries, found images, a novel, and a new series of photorealistic paintings, are juxtaposed with Melgaard's vigorous, expressionistic drawings and iconography, accompanied by an essay by Ann Demeester. Exhibition: De Appel, Amsterdam (19.6-5.9.2010).

Rich Texts written by John Kelsey and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-01 with Art categories.

Compiled for the first time here, the critic, artist, gallerist, dealer, translator John Kelsey's selected essays gamesomely convey some of the most poignant challenges in the art world and in the many social roles it creates. “When the critic chooses to become a smuggler, a hack, a cook, or an artist,” Kelsey said at a 2007 conference at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, “it's maybe because criticism as such remains tied to an outmoded social relation.” It is precisely this relation that Kelsey intends to not only critique but also to surpass. In this way, Kelsey's “Rich Texts” play the double role of explaining the art world and actively participating in it; they close the distance between the work of art and how we talk about it. Originally published in Artforum—where Kelsey is a contributing editor—Texte zur Kunst, Parkett, and various artists' catalogues, the essays compiled in Rich Texts have all been written over the last decade, and therefore embody a timeliness that strikes at the core of the contemporary art world and the crises that have come to define it. Across three decades the American artist and cinematographer, Arthur Jafa (b. 1960, Tupelo, USA) has developed a dynamic, multidisciplinary practice ranging from films and installations to lecture-performances and happenings that tackle, challenge and question prevailing cultural assumptions about identity and race.Jafa's work is driven by a recurrent question: how might one identify and develop a specifically Black visual aesthetics equal to the 'power, beauty and alienation' of Black music in American culture?Building upon Jafa's image-based practice, this enormous new volume comprises a series of visual sequences that are cut and juxtaposed across its pages. The artist has been collecting and working from a set of source books since the 1990s, seeking to trace and map unwritten histories and narratives relating to black life.Punctuating this visual material is a series of commissioned texts partnered with a rich compendium of essays, short stories and poetry that has informed Jafa's artistic practice and which together form an unprecedented resource. With over 30 contributors including: art critic Dave Hickey, philosopher and gender theorist Judith Butler, award-winning British artist John Akomfrah, and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Hilton Als.Published after the exhibition, Arthur Jafa: A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions at Serpentine Galleries, London (8 June - 10 September 2017), and at the Julia Stoschek Collection, Berlin (11 February - 25 November 2018).

Don Juan In The Village written by Jane DeLynn and has been published by Univ of Wisconsin Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Fiction categories.

From the lesbian bars of New York City to the back streets of Fez, from the S&M scene in Los Angeles to the calm ocean depths off a Caribbean island, the heroine of Don Juan in the Village is ever on the prowl. In search of the longed-for, idealized lover, she finds instead a series of wrenching, sometimes hilarious encounters with an array of women, among them a movie star, a moroccan prostitute, and a high school dropout who works as a grocery store clerk. Hip, sardonic, yet painfully self-conscious and often deluded, she is convinced that no matter where she goes or whom she is with, she is doomed to perpetual solitude and estrangement.
