The Handbook of Latin American Environmental Aesthetics offers a comprehensive overview of Latin American aesthetic and conceptual production addressing the more-than-human environment at the intersection between art, activism, and critique. Fields include literature, performance, film, and other audiovisual media as well as their interactions with community activisms. Scholars who have helped establish environmental approaches in the field as well as emergent critical voices revisit key concepts such as ecocriticism, (post-)extractivism, and multinaturalism, while opening new avenues of dialogue with areas including critical race theory and ethnicity, energy humanities, queer-*trans studies, and infrastructure studies, among others. This volume both traces these genealogies and maps out key positions in this increasingly central field of Latin Americanism, at the same time as they relate it to the environmental humanities at large. By showing how artistic and literary productions illuminate critical zones of environmental thought, articulating urgent social and material issues with cultural archives, historical approaches and conceptual interventions, this volume offers cutting-edge critical tools for approaching literature and the arts from new angles that call into question the nature/culture boundary.

This volume focuses on the connection between ecological thought and the technological arts in Mexico in order to challenge assumptions that ecological thought is a domain exclusive to the arts of the Global North and reconceive it as an inventive nexus of materialist speculations into a global posthuman world. Tracking the concept of ecology through a series of case studies taken from the histories of new media arts in Mexico over the last 50 years (from the mid-twentieth century to the present), this book differs from ecological art histories that either ignore technological art or associate it exclusively with the Global North. It includes artists and collectives working both in Mexico and transnationally and examines collaborative projects responding to anthropogenic environmental degradation in Mexico and elsewhere. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, Latin American studies, media studies, and environmental studies.

New Approaches to Latin American Studies: Culture and Power, Vol. 2 provides an examination of the new and defining approaches that have emerged in the field of Latin American Studies in the last decade since 2014. Like its predecessor, this second volume of New Approaches to Latin American Studies is organized using the concept of a turn (as in linguistic or cultural turn) and aims to help both students and faculty, in an eminently interdisciplinary space like Latin American Studies, find new ways of conceptualizing objects and research. Original contributions from experts in their fields provide a discussion that is not meant to be fully comprehensive but concentrates instead on key authors and key texts. In each chapter, the keyword that defines the turn functions as a specific limit that contains the proliferation of references and connections, restricting them to the trajectory of such turn. This second volume includes 11 new chapters covering important transformations during the last decade on the issues, perspectives, and stakes of the field. This book is an expert-produced, reliable, and reader-friendly orientation to the many new areas of research Latin American Studies now encompasses and evidence of the dynamism of this complex field.

The volume analyzes the implications of the “world exhaustion” concept that has emerged in a post-global cultural context and whose effects are particularly salient in Latin American literatures and cultures. This conceptual term aptly describes the ambivalent lived experiences of societies that have been marked by centuries of globalization—and the artistic production that seeks to give form and meaning to these experiences.

From pre-Columbian times till today, human interventions in aquatic environments have been shaping the geopolitics of Latin America. The contributors to this volume examine the relationship between water and politics in Latin America via readings of fiction and poetry by both renowned and upcoming writers. Through close literary analysis, they demonstrate how water functions as a medium for narrating submerged histories and for unsettling (post)colonial assumptions. The volume reveals literary strategies that make it possible to share knowledge about other ways of organizing life in aquatic environments.

Examining Brazilian artists’ engagement with the natural world from 1900 to the present The Environment in Brazilian Culture explores the centrality of the natural world in shaping Brazilian literature, cinema, and art since 1900. This collection, exceptional in its representation of material from diverse locations and cultures within Brazil, as well as in its investigation of a range of artistic mediums and genres, portrays the human connection to nature in the most biodiverse country in the world. From the forests of the Amazon to the mountains of the Serra do Mar, this volume examines Brazilian depictions of different geographical regions and the plants and animals found in each. Contributors pay particular attention to the environment’s integral place in Indigenous identity and art. They also discuss artistic references to environmental devastation, underscoring the connection between ecological degradation and contemporary socioeconomic inequality. Works discussed in these chapters include novels by Itamar Vieira Junior and Maria José Silveira, poetry by Marília Floôr Kosby, Guarani and Bororo verbal arts, Huni Kuĩ documentary films, and paintings by Candido Portinari. These wide-ranging analyses highlight the value of Brazilian cultural production to critical plant and animal studies, posthumanism, and the environmental humanities. And, in grappling with Brazil’s extractivist past, they search for alternatives to a predatory approach to the land and its inhabitants, looking for pathways to environmental justice in the Anthropocene. Nielson | Maria Esther Maciel | Valeria Meiller | Benjamin Burt | Juliana Luna Freire | Nuno Marques | Cinthya Torres | Jens Andermann | Malcolm K.
