This volume is the first in the series devoted to the commutative harmonic analysis, a fundamental part of the contemporary mathematics. The fundamental nature of this subject, however, has been determined so long ago, that unlike in other volumes of this publication, we have to start with simple notions which have been in constant use in mathematics and physics. Planning the series as a whole, we have assumed that harmonic analysis is based on a small number of axioms, simply and clearly formulated in terms of group theory which illustrate its sources of ideas. However, our subject cannot be completely reduced to those axioms. This part of mathematics is so well developed and has so many different sides to it that no abstract scheme is able to cover its immense concreteness completely. In particular, it relates to an enormous stock of facts accumulated by the classical "trigonometric" harmonic analysis. Moreover, subjected to a general mathematical tendency of integration and diffusion of conventional intersubject borders, harmonic analysis, in its modem form, more and more rests on non-translation invariant constructions. For example, one ofthe most signifi cant achievements of latter decades, which has substantially changed the whole shape of harmonic analysis, is the penetration in this subject of subtle techniques of singular integral operators.

Representations are at the heart of artificial intelligence (AI). This book is devoted to the problem of representation discovery: how can an intelligent system construct representations from its experience? Representation discovery re-parameterizes the state space - prior to the application of information retrieval, machine learning, or optimization techniques - facilitating later inference processes by constructing new task-specific bases adapted to the state space geometry. This book presents a general approach to representation discovery using the framework of harmonic analysis, in particular Fourier and wavelet analysis. Biometric compression methods, the compact disc, the computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner in medicine, JPEG compression, and spectral analysis of time-series data are among the many applications of classical Fourier and wavelet analysis. A central goal of this book is to show that these analytical tools can be generalized from their usual setting in (infinite-dimensional) Euclidean spaces to discrete (finite-dimensional) spaces typically studied in many subfields of AI. Generalizing harmonic analysis to discrete spaces poses many challenges: a discrete representation of the space must be adaptively acquired; basis functions are not pre-defined, but rather must be constructed. Algorithms for efficiently computing and representing bases require dealing with the curse of dimensionality. However, the benefits can outweigh the costs, since the extracted basis functions outperform parametric bases as they often reflect the irregular shape of a particular state space. Case studies from computer graphics, information retrieval, machine learning, and state space planning are used to illustrate the benefits of the proposed framework, and the challenges that remain to be addressed. Representation discovery is an actively developing field, and the author hopes this book will encourage other researchers to explore this exciting area of research. This book considers various spaces and algebras made up of functions, measures, and other objects-situated always on one or another locally compact abelian group, and studied in the light of the Fourier transform. The emphasis is on the objects themselves, and on the structure-in-detail of the spaces and algebras. A mathematician needs to know only a little about Fourier analysis on the commutative groups, and then may go many ways within the large subject of harmonic analysis-into the beautiful theory of Lie group representations, for example. But this book represents the tendency to linger on the line, and the other abelian groups, and to keep asking questions about the structures thereupon. That tendency, pursued since the early days of analysis, has defined a field of study that can boast of some impressive results, and in which there still remain unanswered questions of compelling interest. We were influenced early in our careers by the mathematicians Jean-Pierre Kahane, Yitzhak Katznelson, Paul Malliavin, Yves Meyer, Joseph Taylor, and Nicholas Varopoulos. They are among the many who have made the field a productive meeting ground of probabilistic methods, number theory, diophantine approximation, and functional analysis. Since the academic year 1967-1968, when we were visitors in Paris and Orsay, the field has continued to see interesting developments. Let us name a few. Sam Drury and Nicholas Varopoulos solved the union problem for Helson sets, by proving a remarkable theorem (2.1.3) which has surely not seen its last use.

The book aims at giving a monographic presentation of the abstract harmonic analysis of hypergroups, while combining it with applied topics of spectral analysis, approximation by orthogonal expansions and stochastic sequences. Hypergroups are locally compact Hausdorff spaces equipped with a convolution, an involution and a unit element. Related algebraic structures had already been studied by Frobenius around 1900. Their axiomatic characterisation in harmonic analysis was later developed in the 1970s. Hypergoups naturally emerge in seemingly different application areas as time series analysis, probability theory and theoretical physics.The book presents harmonic analysis on commutative and polynomial hypergroups as well as weakly stationary random fields and sequences thereon. For polynomial hypergroups also difference equations and stationary sequences are considered. At greater extent than in the existing literature, the book compiles a rather comprehensive list of hypergroups, in particular of polynomial hypergroups. With an eye on readers at advanced undergraduate and graduate level, the proofs are generally worked out in careful detail. The bibliography is extensive.
