The World Bank's research is intended to address critical issues and problems facing member governments in developing and transition economies. How can the governments of the poorest countries generate enough revenue to provide the education and health services essential to reducing poverty and promoting growth and development? How can poor countries attract investors to build the infrastructure their economies need? How can they develop systems to bring clean water to the 2 billion people without it today? How can they train teachers and bring to class the 115 million children who have not yet received any education? And how can rich countries be persuaded to lower market barriers, helping to reverse the decline in export prices for poor countries that has left them earning less from trade today than in the 1970s? These are the types of questions that are addressed in this edition of 'The World Bank Research Program: Abstracts from Current Studies'. This volume reports on research projects initiated, under way, or completed from July 2003 through June 2004. It covers 151 research projects on several broad development related issues, including agriculture, health, education, environment, infrastructure, investment climate, and more. The abstract for each project describes the questions addressed, the analytic methods used, the findings to date, and policy implications.

Migration And Development written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. International Development Committee and has been published by The Stationery Office this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with categories.

The Committee's report finds that although migration is not a panacea for development problems, if properly managed it can deliver major economic gains in terms of poverty reduction. It shows how governments and others could, by shaping the nature of migration and the distribution of its costs and benefits, make migration work for the poor. It highlights five myths which surround the subject, including the fear that there is a 'tidal wave of migrants about to crash on our shores', and that it is the poorest, most desperate people who migrate. The Committee's report argues that effective policies implemented at each stage of the migration journey, by the UK and other developed countries, in developing countries and at a multilateral level, can make migration work for poverty reduction. This includes the need to regulate recruitment policies in rich countries to reduce problems of 'brain-drain' from poorer countries; tackling human trafficking and illegal migration; better managed migration; and promotion of resource flows, including remittances, created by migration. Ultimately, managing migration for poverty reduction is beyond any single nation state, and requires effective partnerships bilaterally and at the multinational level.

Globalization And Money written by Supriya Singh and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-03 with Political Science categories.

Globalization and Money explores how men and women, particularly the poor and the unbanked in the global South, use money in ways that empower themselves and their families. Supriya Singh argues that money as a medium of relationships across cultures is a central component of globalization. She deftly weaves theory and individual stories to show how money is emblematic of interconnected markets, the half of the world that is unbanked, and gender disparities. She shows how men’s and women’s banking patterns are tied to their management of money in the household. Migrants send money home to show they care for their families and communities left behind. Yet these remittances are far from symbolic; instead they represent more than three times the total amount of official development assistance. This book illustrates how many of the most exciting changes in harnessing people’s savings; widening credit and insurance; and lowering the cost of technologies, payments and money transfers are taking place in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Singh demonstrates how strategies to help the poor and marginalized have gone global in South–South conversations, making us rethink the contours of globalization and money.

International Migration And Global Justice written by Satvinder Juss and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-22 with Law categories.

How should international law approach the critical issue of movement of peoples in the 21st century? This book presents a radical reappraisal of this controversial problem. Challenging present-day ideas of restrictions on freedom of movement and the international structure that controls entry to states, it argues for a new blueprint for international migration policy that eliminates waste, aids both developing and developed societies and brings attendant benefits to voluntary migrants and involuntary refugees alike. In a world of increasing disorder, it is suggested that current policy only adds to international instability and threatens the interests of a functional global community.
