After the Civil War the upper middle class in America expanded and became increasingly style-conscious. Visiting European royalty as well as American women returning from the International Exhibition in Paris in 1867 stimulated fashion awareness — and it was in this climate that the magazine Harper's Bazar flowered. Dedicated to being "A repository of Fashion, Pleasure, and Instruction," it brought to American women inside glimpses of the very latest European and American fashions, all in carefully detailed engravings. It was much the finest source for high fashion for this period. This book consists of the finest illustrations from Harper's Bazar between the years 1867 and 1898, the period of its peak importance. These illustrations not only show you what apparel appealed to our Victorian ancestors, but give you an idea of the evolutionary nature of fashion as well. You will see bustles come and go, natural forms become the vogue only to be superseded by the constricting hourglass figure. Each look is illustrated with a number of different garments. There are gowns for the morning hours, dinner dresses, sporting costumes, traveling clothes and apparel for special occasions: weddings, communions, funerals, etc. Since no costume was complete without accessories, a full line of hats, fans, parasols, muffs, gloves, handkerchiefs, jewelry, shoes and hair styles is shown as well. A selection of children's attire is also included. An introduction by Stella Blum covers the history of Harper's Bazar and examines the various phases fashion went through between 1867 and 1898.

For lovers of vintage clothing, British supermodel and vintage fashion muse Kate Moss unveils a personally curated selection of her favorite couture and costume pieces from the Museo de la Moda, the world-class fashion museum in Santiago, Chile. International fashion icon Kate Moss and the premier South American fashion museum Museo de la Moda meet in this undeniably stylish volume that celebrates iconic vintage fashion moments throughout history. The Museo de la Moda, founded in 1999, opened in 2007, and directed by Chile's first textile industry scion Jorge Yarur Bascuñán, is one of the world's most important but least-known museums of its kind, housing exquisite garments from nineteenth-century Dolman shawls to twenty-first-century sequin dresses by Balmain. Edited by Kate Moss with text contributions from fashion curator Lydia Kamitsis, this volume features a stylish selection of one hundred archival pieces from the museum, each charting different fashion trends that have inspired Moss's personal sartorial style. Organized by fashion theme, from 1920s opera coats to 1960s Swinging London designs, but also including iconic pieces of pop culture, such as Marilyn Monroe's black dresses and Jimi Hendrix's Indian tunics, each chapter showcases new images of the museum garments as selected by Moss, accompanied by interesting anecdotes and street-style photography documenting Moss wearing that particular fashion trend. This is a chic volume that will appeal to Moss's global following and readers passionate about style, fashion history, design, and culture.

Most Beautiful Job In The World written by Giulia Mensitieri and has been published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-04 with Literary Criticism categories.

Fashion is one of the most powerful industries in the world, accounting for 6 per cent of global consumption and growing steadily. Since the 1980s and the birth of the neoliberal economy, it has emerged as the glittering face of capitalism, bringing together prestige, power and beauty and occupying a central place in media and consumer fantasies. Yet the fashion industry, which claims to offer highly desirable job opportunities, relies significantly on job instability, not just in outsourced garment production but at the very heart of its creative production of luxury. Based on an in-depth investigation involving stylists, models, designers, hairdressers, make-up artists, photographers and interns, anthropologist Giulia Mensitieri draws back fashion's glamorous facade to explore the lived realities of working in the industry. This challenging book lays bare the working conditions of 'the most beautiful job in the world', showing that exploitation isn't confined to sweatshops or sexual harassment of models, but exists at the very heart of the powerful symbolic and economic centre of fashion.
