Accessible and adaptable Japanese Buddhist rituals to infuse your life with purpose, healing, and gratitude when you need it most. How do we make and sustain meaning amidst the messy conditions of daily life? Personalized rituals can help us blossom like lotuses right in the mud of the present. On a pilgrimage she began after her mother’s death, author Paula Arai encountered numerous Japanese Buddhists who taught her the remarkable power of ritual to heal—practices you can adapt to your own cultural and personal circumstances. Applying principles of Zen practice, she offers stories and insights that illuminate how to nourish and reap a healing bounty of connection, joy, and compassion. Examples include how to: Relate to a late loved one as a “personal Buddha” who supports you Create a home altar to serve as a safe space to be vulnerable, face intense emotions, and experience a depth of warm gratitude that melts fear and anger Engage in daily tasks with attentiveness, intention, and creativity such that they become opportunities for body-mind integration Develop family rituals to celebrate relationship and mark transition Approach illness and grief with a purposeful sense of connection to life-and-death in its wholeness Like Marie Kondo's Shinto principles for decluttering, Paula Arai uses rituals influenced by Japanese Zen for personal and relational nourishment and spiritual healing.

Healing our wounded Earth is not unrelated to healing our own personal wounds. The pains of the Earth and those of the individuals making up our Earth community cannot be separated. Thus the healing of our individual lives can become the basis of the healing of Earth. This book sheds light on Zen as a spiritual path that leads to healing - in the personal, social, and ecological dimensions of our being. If you are seeking a form of spiritual practice that addresses all three of these dimensions or simply seeking to deepen your understanding of the Zen path, it is written for you. If instead of fragmentation, disorientation, and vacuity, you seek wholeness, groundedness, and integrity in your life, it is written for you. Perhaps you, too, have come to realize that our global community is in a sad state of affairs, that we need to radically change how we live and relate to one another and to the Earth. You may already be engaged in some form of social or ecological action addressing these issues-and you may feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task. If you've been tempted to pessimism or have thrown up your hands in despair when your best efforts don't seem to make a dent, this book is for you, Healing Breath offers a way to integrate a spiritual path with active, socio-ecological engagement as the ground. This book also addresses another set of questions: can a Christian genuinely practice Zen? How is Zen practice compatible with a Christian faith commitment? To fully engage in a Zen practice, what kind of belief system is presupposed or required? How can spiritual practice in an Eastern tradition inform Christian life and understanding? In the process of describing the Zen way of life, Healing Breath will consider various Christian expressions, symbols, and practices - not as an apologetic for that belief system, but to show how they, too, point to the transformative and healing perspectives and experiences provided by Zen.

With clarity of thought and realism, Rev. Ross Cribb sets out to provide an alternative vocabulary with which to describe significant events, human nature and spirituality, with the goal to empower individuals to have happier and more meaningful lives. His highly readable combination of Zen, philosophy, psychology and science makes a compelling case for his view of spirituality. Explaining that we often refer to different parts of ourselves as independent, he takes this a step further by invoking the New Age concept of Energy Bodies (specifically the Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Bodies). With these he explains Enlightenment, Being in the Moment and Energy Healing—an effective method for releasing blockages that take us out of the moment.

Bringing Zen Home written by Paula Arai and has been published by University of Hawaii Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-30 with Religion categories.

Healing lies at the heart of Zen in the home, as Paula Arai discovered in her pioneering research on the ritual lives of Zen Buddhist laywomen. She reveals a vital stream of religious practice that flourishes outside the bounds of formal institutions through sacred rites that women develop and transmit to one another. Everyday objects and common materials are used in inventive ways. For example, polishing cloths, vivified by prayer and mantra recitation, become potent tools. The creation of beauty through the arts of tea ceremony, calligraphy, poetry, and flower arrangement become rites of healing. Bringing Zen Home brings a fresh perspective to Zen scholarship by uncovering a previously unrecognized but nonetheless vibrant strand of lay practice. The creativity of domestic Zen is evident in the ritual activities that women fashion, weaving tradition and innovation, to gain a sense of wholeness and balance in the midst of illness, loss, and anguish. Their rituals include chanting, ingesting elixirs and consecrated substances, and contemplative approaches that elevate cleaning, cooking, child-rearing, and caring for the sick and dying into spiritual disciplines. Creating beauty is central to domestic Zen and figures prominently in Arai’s analyses. She also discovers a novel application of the concept of Buddha nature as the women honor deceased loved ones as “personal Buddhas.” One of the hallmarks of the study is its longitudinal nature, spanning fourteen years of fieldwork. Arai developed a “second-person,” or relational, approach to ethnographic research prompted by recent trends in psychobiology. This allowed her to cultivate relationships of trust and mutual vulnerability over many years to inquire into not only the practices but also their ongoing and changing roles. The women in her study entrusted her with their life stories, personal reflections, and religious insights, yielding an ethnography rich in descriptive and narrative detail as well as nuanced explorations of the experiential dimensions and effects of rituals. In Bringing Zen Home, the first study of the ritual lives of Zen laywomen, Arai applies a cutting-edge ethnographic method to reveal a thriving domain of religious practice. Her work represents an important contribution on a number of fronts—to Zen studies, ritual studies, scholarship on women and religion, and the cross-cultural study of healing.

Self-compassion. Positive social relations. An enduring sense of freedom and peace. They're essential parts of our everyday lives, or should be. But each of us struggles with difficult emotions and mental blockages: we might lash out when we should know better, or regress in negatively familiar situations, or struggle with our confidence. These types of problematic reactions occur--and recur--when we're unkind to and negligent of our inner selves. The Great Heart Way offers us all a way to heal inner wounds and transform our difficult emotions. Anyone can try it, and everyone should. Using clear language and personal anecdotes, The Great Heart Way shows how to follow the Great Heart Method, an efficacious program for healing and self-fulfillment. The Method is easily incorporated into busy schedules (it can take less than 30 minutes per day), and is accessible to all, regardless of spiritual background. The Great Heart Way gives readers the tools to safely work through uncovered emotional pain and establish a healthier, happier and well-balanced way of thinking.

"Zen in the Garden" will help you to slow down and begin to see those beautiful little moments in your surrounding environment. You can find it right outside your front door in your own garden. In this inspirational little book you will discover: Motivational anecdotes that help you remember the importance of connecting with nature to encourage health and healing. Beautiful photographs from an award-winning photographer to help you lose yourself in beauty. Nature challenges to encourage you to venture out and find that sense of peace. Gardening tips to help you create your own peaceful Zen space right at your home. Quieting the mind In this fast paced world it's easy to get swept up in our stressful lives and become blinded to the beauty that surrounds us. When we make the conscious choice to slow down and breathe, our minds relax and we become grounded in spiritual awareness. Nature has many gifts to give us if we open our eyes so we can see and quiet our minds long enough to listen. Nature and the human soul This little book is about nature and the human soul. It is about healing the body, healing the heart and spirituality. It is about finding a balance to alleviate the stress that affects our health. It provides motivational reflections, inspirational photographs, gardening tips, and nature challenges to help the reader slow down and breathe in the beauty of each moment. Why I wrote Zen in the Garden I am not some New-age guru who spent years writing a transformational book filled with the secrets of the ages. Instead, I am a woman who has lived a stressful life and suffered the health consequences of that life. I created this book after several months of treatment for skin cancer. The experience forced me to slow down and reevaluate what is most important in my life. Ever since childhood I have loved to spend time in nature. It has been an important source of healing, peace, and spirituality when the world around me became ugly and stressful. Whether I climb a mountain peak or get my hands dirty while planting flowers in my garden, nature grounds me, promotes spiritual awareness, and reminds me of the beauty that exists when I choose to open my eyes to it. What I hope for you My hope in sharing my photographs and words is they will cause you to pause for a moment in your own busy lives and remind you to embrace the little things each day. My wish is you will be moved to take the time to reconnect with nature and find your way back to the earth from where all life springs and to where all life will ultimately reach its end. No matter your spiritual beliefs, the Zen philosophy of mindfullness while in nature, has the transformational power to promote spiritual awareness and will help you find peace, healing, and happiness.
