EMPOWERING DISCIPLINE by Vicki PhillipsThird Edition (Revised and Expanded, (c) 2011) Most school discipline programs have one thing in common; their primary goal is to CONTROL student behavior. This tends to work with the majority of students; however there remains a group with whom nothing seems to work--so we label these students as "at-risk" and attempt to tighten our control. The author of this book, Vicki Phillips, was principal of an award-winning alternative school for at-risk students for twenty-two years. Since all of her students were at-risk, she had to come up with strategies which would work with them, which meant applying a non-traditional approach. After years of being successful with students labeled difficult by the mainstream, Vicki shares her approach in this book and guarantees that it works! Vicki calls for a shift in our thinking about the issue of control. Traditionally, schools try to "control" these students. When this doesn't work, the schools escalate the control, which causes the students to escalate their behavior. Students with no aspirations, who feel they have nothing to lose, can end up "winning" any power-struggle since they don't care about our "consequences"! "Control" becomes counter-productive and these students spiral downhill. In contrast, Vicki's strategies recognize the need of most at-risk students to be self-directed, and they involve working with students instead of against them. They are based on therapeutic principles and are designed to build emotional intelligence and "perspective modification," so that students will view the situation in a different way and choose to respond more appropriately. COMMENTS ABOUT EMPOWERING DISCIPLINE "Vicki Phillips' book EMPOWERING DISCIPLINE provides what every classroom teacher needs these days: practical strategies and perspectives to help kids who aren't happy campers in school discover their true strengths and abilities. Her book can save teachers from wasting time on externally-controlling discipline systems and help them turn the 'at-risk' student into the 'at-promise' learner!" --Thomas Armstrong, PhD., Author of THE MYTH OF THE ADD CHILD, MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES IN THE CLASSROOM, & AWAKENING YOUR CHILD'S NATURAL GENIUS "Finally! A discipline model that blends the needs of at-risk students, indeed all students, and the kinds of teacher behaviors that can make school an exciting and emotionally safe place for everyone. If you are looking for effective, positive, and preventative ways to deal with disruptive behavior, rebelliousness, resistance, passive learning, and problems of student dropout or truancy, you'll find answers here." --Jane Bluestein, PhD., author of 21st CENTURY DISCIPLINE: Teaching Students Responsibility & Self-Control and BEING A SUCCESSFUL TEACHER "Vicki Phillips clearly understands at-risk kids and their powerful need to make their own choices regardless of whether the choices get them in trouble. EMPOWERING DISCIPLINE is an exciting practical tool for anyone working with 'discipline resistant' kids because it gives step-by-step directions for how to get the most resistant kids to make good choices about their behavior as well as their school work. If you ever wondered what in the world to say or do with an oppositional teenager, EMPOWERING DISCIPLINE is the help you need. --Joyce Divinyi, M.S., Licensed Professional Counselor, Director of The Wellness Connection, author of SUCCESSFUL STRATEGIES FOR WORKING OR LIVING WITH DIFFICULT KIDS

Can you resist everything except temptation? In a hedonistic age full of distractions, it's hard to possess willpower - or in fact even understand why we should need it. Yet it's actually the most important factor in achieving success and a happy life, shown to be more significant than money, looks, background or intelligence. This book reveals the secrets of self-control. For years the old-fashioned, even Victorian, value of willpower has been disparaged by psychologists who argued that we're largely driven by unconscious forces beyond our control. Here Roy Baumeister, one of the world's most esteemed and influential psychologists, and journalist John Tierney, turn this notion on its head. They show us that willpower is like a muscle that can be strengthened with practice and improved over time. The latest laboratory work shows that self-control has a physical basis to it and so is dramatically affected by simple things such as eating and sleeping - to the extent that a life-changing decision may go in different directions depending on whether it's made before or after lunch. You will discover how babies can be taught willpower, the joys of the to-don't list, the success of Alcoholics Anonymous, the pointlessness of diets and the secrets to David Blaine's stunts. There are also fascinating personal stories, from explorers, students, soldiers, ex-addicts and parents. Based on years of psychological research and filled with practical advice, this book will teach you how to gain from self-control without pain, and discover the very real power in willpower. The results are nothing short of life-changing.

Are you a mother and would you like to understand what are the best methods of education for your child but you don't know how to orient yourself among the thousands of information available online? Being a parent is one of life's greatest challenges. There are hundreds of techniques to educate your children, but only one technique is helping millions of parents for more than 40 years in America and the rest of the world to create a healthy relationship with their children. Only one technique has been able to solve the many problems a parent faces. Positive Discipline Positive Discipline is a program developed by Dr. Jane Nelsen. It is designed to teach young people to become responsible, respectful and resourceful members of their communities. Positive Discipline teaches important social and life skills in a manner that is deeply respectful and encouraging for both children and adults Recent research tells us that children are hardwired from birth to connect with others, and that children who feel a sense of connection to their community, family, and school are less likely to misbehave. To be successful, contributing members of their community, children must learn necessary social and life skills. Positive Discipline is based on the understanding that discipline must be taught and that discipline teaches. The key to positive discipline is not punishment, but mutual respect. In this book you will discover: ★ All you need to know about Positive Discipline ★ Teach children not what to think but how to think ★ How to understand when your child is becoming a teenager ★ Meet the special challenge of teen misbehavior ★ How to connect with your child This book is divided into two parts, one for children and one for teenagers This is not only a theoretical book, inside this book you will find practical situations of daily life with the right method to deal with them. In this book I have collected both common problems such as poor academic performance, bad relationships, and situations that are more harmful and difficult to manage such as drug use or illegal and harmful behavior. The advice contained in the book can be applied to both males and females and there are examples for both. If you want to learn more about how to manage your child and how to make him a successful person, then simply click the buy now button on this page to get started.

The "Contemporary Health Series" covers critical health and family life topics in a sequence of modules with two curricular divisions: "Into Adolescence" for middle school teachers and "Entering Adulthood" for high school teachers. This module uses eight activity-based lessons to help 9th through 12th graders make better life choices through understanding their own power and their role in creating what happens to them. This module focuses on responsibility in a personal sense, beginning with a lesson designed to introduce the issue of responsibility. Lesson 2 develops the general concept of locus of control and introduces students to the differences between internality and externality. Lessons 3 and 4 deal with the sub-skills of predicting and planning. Lesson 5 presents a model for learning from mistakes as one of the great benefits of the application of locus of control. Lesson 6 focuses on effective communication as a way to increase personal responsibility for interacting with others. Lesson 7 focuses on allowing students to develop rules for each other and for the teacher. The eighth and final lesson explores how students can experience more joy from school when they perceive themselves as active members of a classroom community. (NB)

Adolescent Psychology In Today S World written by Michael J. Nakkula and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-02 with Psychology categories.

This groundbreaking three-volume set spotlights how conditions around the world are affecting the healthy development of adolescents in their respective environments, on all six continents. Continually unstable or perpetually poor economic conditions, globalization, and rapid technological change are just three of the forces affecting a group 1.2 billion strong today, a demographic poised to become our world leaders and catalysts in the not-too-distant future: the world's adolescents. Led by two editors who have been dedicated to studying adolescent development worldwide for decades, this novel collection of works from contributors in more than 40 countries emphasizes how possibilities for healthy mental and physical development are affected by the difficulties youths face in their countries and how these challenges have shaped, and are shaping, contemporary teenage life today. The set comprehensively addresses issues for adolescents across the globe, such as the day-to-day challenges of poverty, inadequate education, violence or war, disease, reproductive matters, globalization and technological challenges, and more, while also providing a strengths-based focus in the volumes, showing how and why some teenagers in each country have surmounted the challenges and forged stronger characters to better their worlds. These stories document more than personal victories, and their experiences matter to far more than the adolescents themselves. In its State of the World's Children 2011 report, UNICEF noted that the world community needs to turn its attention to adolescents in need, explaining that focusing on this large and potentially powerful group makes economic sense as well as being a necessary step in working towards achieving human justice. By addressing the risks, challenges, and strengths of teenagers as a group in countries worldwide, this work serves to break the cycle of poverty, violence, discrimination, and death for adolescents.
