Following on from a consultation process, this White Paper contains a number of proposals based around three core principles: developing a unified approach to the historic environment; maximising opportunities for inclusion and involvement; and supporting sustainable communities by putting the historic environment at the heart of an effective planning system. The first section sets out legislative change and implementation arrangements for England; the second part cover implementation arrangements for Wales; and the third section covers legislative change effecting the marine historic environment across the UK. Proposals include: the creation of a single system for national designation to replace listing, scheduling and registering; the publication of new detailed selection criteria for national and local designation; responsibility for national designation devolved in England to English Heritage; improved public access to designation records through new internet portals, along with new consultation and appeal processes; new statutory management agreements for historic sites; clearer and enhanced protections for World Heritage Sites; and the introduction of a new statutory duty for local authorities to maintain or have access to Historic Environment Records.

This volume looks at sustainable protection and sustainable use of cultural and natural heritage, particularly in view of the current challenges of the 21st century. For more than 40 years the World Heritage Convention has regulated the protection of the cultural and natural heritage of humankind, particularly in that heritage shall be protected if it is threatened by modern development. The international community has also adopted sustainability and sustainable development, as objectives to facilitate the protection of cultural and natural heritage. Sustainable heritage protection and use must therefore be preserved in the face of the global challenges it faces and must be perceived in terms of societal, political and corresponding economic paradigms.

A must-read for professionals and advocates of historic preservation who are concerned about preservation’s future, this volume is a compendium of powerful essays by thought leaders in the field first presented in 2016 as part of the fiftieth anniversary observation of the US National Historic Preservation Act. Once primarily the concern of historians, antiquarians, and historic architects in the last century, today historic preservation is a popular public movement, a critical component of local land-use ordinances, a regional economic driver, and a significant contributor to the nation’s cultural identity. By any measure, the preservation of the built environment has been a success. However, as demographic, economic, and technological changes alter our future, how will preservation be affected? How will changes in the natural environmental and preservation education change the policies and practices of historic preservation during the 21st century? The contributors here, who are drawn from some of the leading academics and practitioners in preservation, as well as environmentalists, economists and historians, provide answers to these and other questions about the future of historic preservation.

Architectural Conservation In Asia written by John H. Stubbs and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-10 with Architecture categories.

At a time when organized heritage protection in Asia is developing at a rapid pace, Architectural Conservation in Asia provides the first comprehensive overview of architectural conservation practice from Afghanistan to the Philippines. The country-by-country analysis adopted by the book draws out local insights, experiences, best practice and solutions for effective cultural heritage management that will inform study and practice both in Asia and beyond. Whereas architectural conservation in much of the Western world has been extensively documented, this book brings together coverage of many regions where architectural conservation has been understudied. Following on from the highly influential companion volumes on global architectural conservation and architectural conservation in Europe and the Americas, with this book the authors extend their pioneering global examination to the dynamic and evolving field of architectural conservation in Asia. Throughout the book, the authors and regional experts provide local case studies and profile topics that bring depth and insight to this ambitious study. As architectural conservation becomes increasingly global in practice, this book will be of considerable assistance to architectural conservation practitioners, site managers and students of architecture, planning, archaeology and heritage studies worldwide.
