Hermeneutics and Modern Philosophy is a collection of interpretive and critical essays on philosophical hermeneutics, focusing on the seminal work of Heidegger and Gadamer. The anthology brings together classic pieces in the field that previously were widely scattered and includes new articles that shed light on much-debated issues in contemporary hermeneutics. Along with essays by Habermas and Gadamer, it features works by Paul Ricoeur, Wolfhart Pannenberg, Richard Bernstein, David Hoy, Reiner Wiehl, Marjorie Grene, Gianni Vattimo, Merold Westphal, John Caputo, Kathleen Wright, Charles Larmore, and Brice Wachterhauser. Hermeneutics and Modern Philosophy provides both an excellent introduction to the field and a useful commentary on its current state.

Hermeneutics And Truth written by Brice R. Wachterhauser and has been published by Northwestern University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-07-06 with Philosophy categories.

The claim that all human thought involves "interpretation," that all human thought is in some way relative to a contingent context of cognitive, theoretical, practical, and aesthetic considerations, has become widely accepted, but what we understand by "truth" and how we should best pursue it are questions raised with renewed force once a hermeneutical starting point has been embraced. Brice R. Wachterhauser's collection Hermeneutics and Truth is an attempt to contribute to this conversation. No thinkers have wrestled with the issue of truth and interpretation in more illuminating ways for the Continental tradition of philosophy than Heidegger and Gadamer. Hermeneutics and Truth is a dual focus on Heidegger and Gadamer, but it concentrates primarily on Gadamer's efforts to think through the issue of truth for hermeneutics and only secondarily on Heidegger's thought on this issue.

Since its publication in 1952, Leo Strauss's Persecution and the Art of Writing has stirred considerable controversy, particularly among historians concerned with early modern philosophy. On the one hand, several scholars share his view that it would be inadequate to generally take at face value the explicit message of texts which were composed in an era in which severe sanctions were imposed on those who entertained deviating views. ‘Reading between the lines’ therefore seems to be the appropriate hermeneutical approach. On the other hand, the risks of such an interpretative maxim are more than obvious, as it might come up to an unlimited license to ascribe heterodox doctrines to early modern philosophers whose manifest teachings were in harmony with the orthodox positions of their time. The conributions to this volume both address these methodological issues and discuss paradigmatic cases of authors who might indeed be candidates for a Straussian ‘reading between the lines’: Hobbes, Spinoza, and Bayle.

Hermeneutics Ancient And Modern written by Gerald L. Bruns and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-01-01 with Philosophy categories.

In this wide-ranging meditation on the nature and purpose of hermeneutics, Gerald L. Bruns argues that hermeneutics is not merely a contemporary theory but an extended family of questions about understanding and interpretation that predate the beginning of writing. Bruns situates the basic questions of hermeneutics against a background of different cultural traditions and philosophical topics, discussing for example, the interpretation of oracles, the quarrel between philosophy and poetry, Rabbinical midrash, and the nature of Romantic hermeneutics.
