Fascinerend onderzoek dat het vreemdelingenbeleid vroeger en vandaag kadert In de negentiende eeuw bloeide de haven van Antwerpen en dat leidde tot een groeiende aantrekkingskracht op zowel internationale immigranten alsook werkmigranten uit andere hoeken van het land. In dit boek wordt onderzocht hoe de stad Antwerpen omging met buitenlandse nieuwkomers in een periode waarin niet enkel het aantal migratiebewegingen steeg, maar waarin ook de inmenging van de centrale staat alsmaar toenam. Na de onafhankelijkheid van België was de medewerking van de lokale bestuursniveaus aan het vreemdelingenbeleid geen evidentie: de meeste steden in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden hadden van oudsher een sterke traditie van politieke autonomie opgebouwd. Deze studie toont aan hoe de prioriteiten van het stedelijke vreemdelingenbeleid verschilden van die van de nationale staat, en hoe de stad het beleid ten aanzien van buitenlandse nieuwkomers soms bewust selectief toepaste. Het zijn tendens en die ook in de eenentwintigste eeuw nog actueel zijn en die het vreemdelingenbeleid - zowel vroeger als vandaag - vorm geven.

One of twelve children in a close-knit, affluent Catholic Belgian family, Jan Vansina began life in a seemingly sheltered environment. But that cocoon was soon pierced by the escalating tensions and violence that gripped Europe in the 1930s and 1940s. In this book Vansina recalls his boyhood and youth in Antwerp, Bruges, and the Flemish countryside as the country was rocked by waves of economic depression, fascism, competing nationalisms, and the occupation of first Axis and then Allied forces. Within the vast literature on World War II, a much smaller body of work treats the everyday experiences of civilians, particularly in smaller countries drawn into the conflict. Recalling the war in Belgium from a child’s-eye perspective, Vansina describes pangs of hunger so great as to make him crave the bitter taste of cod-liver oil. He vividly remembers the shock of seeing severely wounded men on the grounds of a field hospital, the dangers of crossing fields and swimming in ponds strafed by planes, and his family’s interactions with occupying and escaping soldiers from both sides. After the war he recalls emerging numb from the cinema where he first saw the footage of the Nazi death camps, and he describes a new phase of unrest marked by looting, vigilante justice, and the country’s efforts at reunification. Vansina, a historian and anthropologist best known for his insights into oral tradition and social memory, draws on his own memories and those of his siblings to reconstruct daily life in Belgium during a tumultuous era. Niet lang nadat Maurice Gilliams doorbrak met zijn roman Elias of het gevecht met de nachtegalen werd hij in een ziekenhuis opgenomen met een zware depressie. Het was niet de eerste keer dat hij naar de dood verlangde, en het zou ook niet de laatste keer zijn. Schrijvend onderzocht hij de oorzaken van zijn lijden, even nuchter en analytisch als van schaamte en woede vervuld – ‘het dénkend verdriet’ noemde hij de kern van zijn oeuvre. In haar biografie volgt Annette Portegies hem tijdens de wandelingen die hij door Antwerpen maakte – eerst aan de hand van zijn moeder, die de kerken in de oude binnenstad met hem bezocht, toen naast zijn vader, die in cafés en herbergen op zoek was naar cliënteel voor zijn drukkerij. Ze reist met hem via Turnhout, waar hij op een katholieke kostschool verbleef, naar Amsterdam, waar hij tijdens de Grote Oorlog als vluchteling werd opgenomen. Portegies laat zien dat Gilliams vormgaf aan zijn eerste indrukken, die hem voor het leven zouden tekenen, zoals hij vormgaf aan zijn woorden: zorgvuldig en met overgave bouwend aan een mythe, een schuilplaats, een uitvlucht.

State Communication and Public Politics in the Dutch Golden Age describes the political communication practices of the authorities in the early modern Netherlands. Der Weduwen provides an in-depth study of early modern state communication: the manner in which government sought to inform its citizens, publicise its laws, and engage publicly in quarrels with political opponents. These communication strategies, including proclamations, the use of town criers, and the printing and affixing of hundreds of thousands of edicts, underpinned the political stability of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. Based on systematic research in thirty-two Dutch archives, this book demonstrates for the first time how the wealthiest, most literate, and most politically participatory state of early modern Europe was shaped by the communication of political information. It makes a decisive case for the importance of communication to the relationship between rulers and ruled, and the extent to which early modern authorities relied on the active consent of their subjects to legitimise their government.
